Maybe 4" of light fluffy stuff here in my area of Penn's Woods.  Sidewalks and porches would have been an easy task with the PowerShovel, had it not been for the stupid wind.   No rain in today's forecast but the temperatures are diving into the single digits tonight.  Looking good for another week of ice fishing except for..... the snow.

Bummer here. My glare ice sat got a foot snow Sun. Today they got another 12 plus still going. At my homestead we got 6 " then pouring rain for 2hr @29 deg then back to heavy snow at nightfall. It's a sloppy mess and my ice adventures from here on will be tough dragging.

From just south of Jefferson  co border they got about 1.5 feet Friday and into the night from LE . We got a few inches but that's it. Temps going up and maybe some rain today.

Robins are not very smart. They often come back way too early.

That's what I recall I believe you were saying.
Right now I'm not very smart and sitting on the ice in pouring rain.

It could be worse. You could be sitting in the pouring rain on the ice.

Those not very smart are sitting at work, in the rain.

I was singing in the rain on the ice yesterday and now all my gear is drying out in my garage while waiting to do it all over again today.

Weather dude calling for temperatures to hit fifty in my little piece of Penn's woods, this coming Thursday.  If the temps drop below the freezing mark, transporting my junk on the ice is going to be nice... stupid snow.

I don't know how much longer it will last but I'm gonna miss ice fishing, while chucking bait from my boat.

Plenty of ice but now there's lots of water coming in and on top.
Big craters from yesterday's holes .
Steady downpours . I'm not fair weather by any means so it's going to take another roaring fire to dry gear out later.
Once again I think I'll be walking on water through March but I'm also looking forward to some moving water .
2 trips planned for SR with wife . 1 soon the other in April.

Spring is coming, so is the snow and rain

Re:Weather thread 2018/02/11 12:39:26 (permalink)
Looking at the NWS radar I'm happy to see the heavier rains stayed to my south. Anything to my north, along with a faster melt off would bring lake levels up making for iffy shorelines.

OAT is pushing 50 F. making for some hefty fog conditions and light rain is to be expected in the very near future.

Weather dude saying OAT should drop back to mid thirties this afternoon then making it back into the low 20s overnight.

Hopefully any surface water refreezes into bare ice making for easy dragging of my junk.

Good times.

Not much happened here a sprinkle of rain but it still got below freezing overnight. After Fridays drag and everything soaking wet,  I tweaked my back and decided to call it for the weekend. It's a bit windy here too. I am having second thoughts though as my trip today would of been to the river.

Spring is near. Sun is getting stronger, winds from south. I would love a slow melt instead of a mud fest. Right now, 80 degrees in the man cave packing ice gear seems nice

Yup, I been wearing the muck boots today out in my mud filled yard. I'd guess local ice is pretty shot after tomorrows rain.
Interestingly, only about 80 miles north of me, there is LOTS of snow and LOTS of ice. If the shoreline holds out, I will be back on lake George this weekend with the atv over 75 fow and 2 feet of ice. If the shoreline breaks up for the atv, then it will be a long drag with the sled.

As I was peering out the window between deluges, thanking the lucky starts that the 3+ inches of rain in the last 4 days wasn’t snow, I spied something black up in a tree in the east neighbor’s thicket which surrounds their pond. I retrieved the binoculars and gave things a look see.

By gosh and by golly, it was the first red winged blackbird of the year. While a spit and spat of snow is forecasted for not thus Tuesday, but next, spring is surely here with that bird species arrival.

It doesn’t mean there is no chance of snow, but if it does come down, it never lasts more than a day or so.

Killdeer and Bluebirds, no Robins yet but the arrival of the Sandhill Cranes is expected soon.  Stupid geese are everywhere, raising havoc through the night and my 5 x 8 trailer is now loaded with a load of next seasons firewood, sitting in the field, stuck in the dam mud!!

Therrrre hereee.... and soon to be followed by low temps, north winds gusting into the 40s (for two days) bringing 2 to 4" of snow into my little piece of woods. (10" muup north)

No not Robins, haven't seen none of those yet, but Red Winged Blackbirds and, not baked in a pie.

Picture sucks but I couldn't 'neak up on the little rascals for a clear shot.

Raining like the cow and proverbial flatrock, here in my neck of Penn's Woods. Waiting for the winds to change direction as the tailend of this system begins to drop and wrap around.

Rain slacked just enough before sunset to allow for a mad dash, getting two suet feeders and two seed feeders stocked before the snow arrives.

Heard my first Robin but didn't dare stop, to lay an eyeball on it.

Wind straight out of the north beginning to change the rain to large snowflakes while driving the temps toward the lower 30s. Sustained in the lower teens and gusting to the lower 20s the wind has the rain and snow coming in between 45 degree angle and horizontal.

Deck surface slowly morphing from wet to icy as the wind chimes change from low subtle tones, to outright clangin and bangin.

Today being the first day of the month, might I be safe in saying, March is coming in like a lion???

The serious winter is over in my location. Sure, there is an inch or two of snow and the wind is blowing like 60, literally (24-30 with gusts to 65 forecasted for tonight), but the RW blackbirds are here, the killdeer are here, and the blue herons are here. That trifecta means none of the bad weather will last more than a day or two.

Just to hedge my bet on spring, I have a lot of work to do and would like to get it out of the way before trout rise for Grannoms, I just went out and bought a side x side utv with a plow. That pretty much guarantees no more snow accumulation for the winter.

We dodged the bullet as far as snow accumulation but what did come down, or should I say horizontal, was heavy wet stuff that immediatel stuck and froze to everything facing north. Kind of neat hearing the frozen stuff, stuck to the trees, crackling as the sun warmed the surfaces.

Everything shoveled this morning has completly dried as have the area roads, that never saw a saltshaker.

Trees and underbrush beginning to take on the red hue as buds begin sprouting and I expect my Pin Oaks, to soon be losing their winter foilage.

Set my field cams along my bayou, last week, hoping to capture some water fowl pics as the migration begins back to the north. Plenty of Canada Geese and three Mallards taking up residence so far, but no dadburned Sand Hills yet.
