Lakers didnt like me much. I heard they tasted lousy anyhow and in those days I ate fish. Recall seeing a big pile of them once at Selkirk- guess somebody hated them so much they didnt even bother to throw them back in.

i hated them but not that much... they were seriously like a boot in the current. the biggest one i ever landed was probably around 15 lb. and that thing just floundered around for a few minutes took the easy way through the raoids around the bend below the town pool and lkadned it in the pool above tall bridge. what a sloppy piece of dead weight that fish was...

Really too bad cause they look a lot like a big brookie and I loooove brookies. Used to go to Nova Scotia Summers just to fish the "strawberry run"  they were little but grrrreat.

went to scotia once while fishing the chetacamp for salmon we camped right next to a little feeder creek that was clogged with little 3 - 8 inch brookies that would snap on a size 20 sulfur comparadun the second it hit the water. don't know if i was aloud to, but i kept 2 of them and they were the most delicious pieces of trout you would ever taste. i was always about a 90-99% catch and release guy and at times completrly catch and release. these were too good to pass up though and there were plenty of them. i tried for 2 days to find their ocean run mothers or fathers but never did...

That size was pretty much all she wrote in those small streams. When I was there the limit was 10 a day. We would loose so many flies to trees and brush in the backwoods fishing we started buying those boards of Japan flies with about a dozen stapled to the cardboard for a buck. They fish didnt care they hit em hard.

From what I remember from a SOL meeting the demise of lakers was due to the mussels covering their spawning grounds(they r lake spawners).

heard similar metal; but i thought it was the mussels covering their spawning grounds that pushed them up the rivers to spawn...

of course lakers are scatter spawners in lakes. they take many years to reach maturity to spawn.. over fishing and the increase in mussels have done a number on them in the lake.. I'm sure you all remember the charters would complain about all the lakers they were catching.. Don't hear that any more now..

Not that I ever caught lakers but I hate to see any species go away- It does not speak well when invasive species cause this kind of change. They are dealing with that stuff again in the lakes and it could cause similar changes in the future.

i was affraid that they were invading on steelhead for a while there. like we've said, there were more lakers than steel at times for a while. i have recently heard that there are still grounds out in the lake in which they still reproduce. don't know a whole lot about it though...

Next thing you know we'll all be fishing for snakeheads while keeping a watch out for 30 foot boa constrictors and swatting killer bees.

lakers were native, steelhead & salmon were not.. Just like the Atlantic's I'd also like to see the lakers stay around..

I dont know if your being sarcastic dimebrite, but about 10 years ago Im standing behind the diner next to oswego sports shop and looking down in the oswego river in a back eddy, there is an alligator gar. I know what they look like because I had one in my fish tank at the time, silver with black spots,  this one was about 2 feet the one in my tank was 1 foot. About 2 weeks later I had heard someone caught a 3lb piranah out of the river. Both tropical fish and doubt they would have lived thru the winter.

not being sarcastic; but not referring to aligator gar; i had said long nosed gar; i haven't seen them in the salmon yet but have seen them in sandy creek river systems in late spring and early summer... wouldn't be surprised if they make their way up to the salmon every now and then

Gotta give you credit as a mod, at least you let us bash each other around now & then and partake in the actual discussions on this board.

Unlike that "other board" when the only time the Big Guns make a post is when they are tryin to sell a ghey hat or an over-priced chicken dinner... LOL

p.s. - can you kindly rename this section the "Fish USA Salmon River Nation"?

Truth be known, I hold back here- as entertaining as it may be. All the interwebs fishermen know I like to stir it up a little. I'm not some ego mod.. They needed a guy is all. I just like fishing & talking about it like everyone else.
