Agreed. I particularly like it when I find a product that provides a level of quality or benefit out-of-proportion to its cost. Craft store tying supplies and the like.

Two things that really helped me this past year were knot-tying aids. When I started to tie and use perfection loops in my setup, I was having trouble passing the one loop through the other. A 98 cent knitting pick was an easy way to reach through the loop, hook the other loop, and pull it back through. I've since improved to the point that I dont need to carry it with me anymore, though. Another aid I still use is to help tie nail knots. I just keep a piece of heavy line, with a loop tied in the end of it in a vest pocket. I wrap my nail knot wraps around the loop, keeping the end of it out past the wraps, then pass the tag through the loop and pull the loop out from under the wraps, carrying my tag end with it. This method results in smaller wraps than the tool I tried, making it easier for me to tighten down.

It's also more or less free.

You're into some serious tying.  I am only a jig tyer.  Much easier.  Much quicker to create new stuff.  I do float egg patterns and san juan worms (try both 8 inches from eachother, dynomite) but thats hardly tying.  I do go through a lot of size 14 bead head pt nymphs....too small for me to bother.  I'm only using fly patterns when I've jigged my arm off for 4 hours.  Or in quicker water where I can't jig effectively.  Although floating jigs in quick water has been a new presentation for me the last few years.  1/16 oz jigs floated in heavy flow with a lot of flash and color.  I'm convinced our steelhead will go after anything that can fit in their mouths that is drifted properly or worked in a triggering action (jigs, flatfish, spoons at the mouths).

I remember the first few years when I would only fish large holes with tons of fish.  If I saw 1-2 fish by themselves I never could get them to even look so I didn't bother.  Now 1-2 fish by themselves are a target, and I'm often catching 1 of them before I move on.

It's the calculations of every situation, every fish, that keeps me coming back.  Man made, overstocked, small streams....the complaints of native chasing purist flyrodders never stop.  For me it's just too much fun to think of the downsides or how it's too easy to be real steelhead fishing.  1-2 fish days on the West Coast?  You can have them.  I'll take Erie and not apologize for it. Where else 2 hours away can I catch 40 fish on a balls cold December day, 20-30"?

I call BS... unless you were there to see which way it flopped on the ground

This is true, the curling of the tail and the way that it flops are vital peices of information to identify the ever elusive bowfinbrown trout.....

I bet if we drop it on paul's hillbilly neighbors camper, it will curl left and if we drop it on Nuke's picnic table it will curl right.

And don't forget the Redneck War games or whatever they were called that had ppl in Elk around 10 pm with flashlights...i think they were trying to shine the fish!!

And honest to God, that is not a photo shopped pic.  That is the setup I have used for the last 3 years.  I bought a nice baitcaster in March that I used up there and it is definately better than the zebco, but only because the drag is light years better.  It doesnt help that the zebco has hundereds of hours on it and dozens of dunkings without any oil or grease. lol.

And the fish scale is accurate. I  was gonna release my big fish till I took a closer look at the scale it showed a weight just above 14 pounds.  haha, it is only a 15 pound scale, so maybe I can top it out this year!!!   I let a 13+ pounder go in late march... word the thick souled sistas - I wanna get witcha

hmmm  I am not sure how to make that happen.... That would require some photoshopping, which would, in turn, cast suspicion on my entire claim and have the exact reverse effect of what i desire.

You are crafty one there KJH... nice try, but you gotta get atleast half a beer into me before I lose my ability to think straight. haha

Hillbilly, I have guys telling me that I lie all the time about size of fish, numbers of fish, I could care less. I fish for fun. NOT to brag. I give fishing reports only because other guys and girls ASK me to. I am always glad to help out. I never carry a camera because I know I would drop it in the water or lose it. Don't wate your time on ignorant people. I will tell you one example. I was slaying walleye, bass and a few musky this winter in a river.(I caught MANY limits, for months) I took one of my doubting co-workers along one evening. He didn't do to good. I asked him to help me land a 26 inch walleye(on 4 lb test). I obviously proved that I was telling the truth. Now the guy won't even talk to me! HIS loss not mine.   Good Luck!  Nice Steely!      KJH is only expressing his opionion, I don't think he's that bad of a guy.

An erie trip for me entails a fifth of southern comfort... first drink around 6 am.

Some should probably check their data... When was the state record brown in PA caught and where? I am sure that a few fish are visiting the creeks at night.

Slick, some would tell you that fish was caught up in the channel. You live there so you probably have better knowledge than I, as I can only live vicariously through the words of others sometimes. Regardless, still no reason to believe that fish couldn't be pushing up in a bit at night, particularly with the cooler than normal temps.

I wouldn't doubt that there is some there at night. lol, if someone would have told me in May that I would be able to go out in late July and catch walleye's in less than 25 foot of water, I would have laughed....Hard....But I did it just the other night. Water temp is cool enough that I wouldn't doubt that there is some lurking around at night....

From the PF&BC Website of State Record Fish...

A brown trout weighing nearly 20 lbs has been named as the new state record for the species by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
The 19 lb., 10 oz. trout was landed July 4th from Walnut Creek by Fazle Buljubasic of Erie. Buljubasic was using a minnow while casting from the shoreline wall at the Commission’s Walnut Creek Access when the big fish hit. It took him about 20 minutes to land the fish, which measured 32 1/4 inches long with a 22-inch girth.
The new record fish easily surpasses the former mark for brown trout. Leroy Patterson of Huntingdon had held the record since 1993 with a 17 lb. 14.5 oz. brown trout he caught in the Raystown Lake spillway.
To be considered for state record certification, a fish must be caught using legal means, in season, from Pennsylvania waters open to the public without charge or fee. Fish taken from farm ponds, fee-fishing lakes, ponds or streams or in waters restricted to use by club members or their guests do not qualify. Potential record fish must exceed the established benchmark by at least one ounce, as weighed on a certified scale.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is the only entity that can certify a new state record fish in the Commonwealth.
