As long as you have a Zebco 33 on it.....

SLick, I am sick of you fishing snobs busting on my setup. lol... i have a 7 foot ugly stick with the premium zebco reel on it and I do better than 75% of the guys i see fishing.

The fish cant see the reel or the rod, as long as the drag is reliable, you will be fine.  I had the 3rd biggest steelhead registered in 2008 (14lbs 3 ounces) and this march I released another that over 13 pounds, so you can't tell me that you cannot catch fish on a zebco/ugly stick setup.  My landing rate is slightly over 50% when using a single hook with egg sacs.

noodle rods are for noodle heads.

Witness my 'mickey mouse' setup in the following picture.

I don't understand some of you that think just b/c someone uses a different setup that it's not ok... I have caught all my steel on a $11 reel/rod combo from Kmart last year.  I also use my Ugly stick (don't know how long).  It was the same rod I used Sunday Tim, with a Shakespear reel.  I understand that the fish are fighting the rod and not the fishermen, but i rather enjoyed fishing with the $11 setup.  Made it more challenging.

Hey, I started with a Quantum rod and reel from Walmart for 25 bucks.I caught many of steel with that setup.....I know what it's like...I am not knocking anyone's setup at all....Since then I have went to a Tica reel and a okuma reel with a cortland noodle...I must say though...Much nicer to fight them with a noodle, but the ultra lights are a lot of fun with the steelies though....

Then, on the other side of the spectrum, you've got the guy with designer waders, $600 fly rod, and shiny new big-game reel, and he is absolutely thrashing the hell out of the water he's fishing.

RE: How far up are the steelies? 2009/07/28 13:58:19 (permalink)
Most of us started somewhere.  7 foot bass rod and 8 lb test, few old flatfish lures from my grandfather's tackle box.  Bucket of emeralds.  Caught enough to make me happy and keep coming back.

Now could I use that setup to jig properly?  No.  Does my 10.5 rod give me an advantage for float setups, landing fish on ultra light line, casting farther in the lake, and numerous other things?  Yes.  Many presentations can be worked from a short rod and whatever reel you like but if just for jigging (80 percent of my steelhead fishing) I couldn't do the same damage with one.  My noodle rod has become an extension of my hand and wrist.  I never felt that way with a short rod on the streams.

As far as "having just as much chance of catching fish as they do"......not so much.

That depends on far more than rod choice.  Angler ability and skill plays way more into it than some might think, even with steelhead.  They can be an easy fish to catch.  They can also be very difficult.  Anglers who succeed when others are failing.....are doing it for a reason.  Not from luck.

I'm not going to go on and on about what I've done or how I dominated holes or anything, but I can give another fishermen the same bait/lure/jig and be confident I would out fish them with it in the same hole, run, etc.  Every fishermen should get to a point where they have that confidence.  Not that you have just a good of chance as any.

Fishing is like any other sport.  We can create our own success rather than blindly tossing into the water and praying.  It does take time, even years, but it can be done.  There are magical days where fish are hitting everything hitting the water....but on normal days with ups and downs in the fishing you should be prepared to catch fish in every situation, with a vareity of presentations.  Then you're the guy catching fish every few minutes while others watch.

And that....has everything to do with gear choice.

Well said Joebaker , I might add one thing though. You dont have to spend an arm and a leg to get good gear. I use middle of the road gear. AS far as cost goes. A 60 to 100 dollar combo set up will suit any angler fine , and that would include line ,hooks ,shot ,floats, etc... It will get you started and pointed in the right direction. Eventually you will get more stuff as you gain experience and maybe upgrade a little and still have the other gear as a good and reliable back up in case you have an OOOPPS !!! my 2 cents.

Im 10 years into and use a Shakespeare Agility 10'6.  Before that a Shakespeare Intrepid 10'6.  Both pretty much same rod, im7 and im8.  Light, strong, durable, take a beating.  Old one is still in use, put so many fish on it guides needed to be resealed a bit.  Have fished Cortlands, St. Croix's, Shimano rods.  Held a few Loomis rods.  Never saw a reason to switch.  I do invest in good reels, high quality line, and everything down to egg hooks, floats, and tying materials.  The rod is not one thing I've felt like I had to go higher on.  When what you are fishing with starts to feel attached to you, you are fishing the right gear.

Agreed. I particularly like it when I find a product that provides a level of quality or benefit out-of-proportion to its cost. Craft store tying supplies and the like.

Two things that really helped me this past year were knot-tying aids. When I started to tie and use perfection loops in my setup, I was having trouble passing the one loop through the other. A 98 cent knitting pick was an easy way to reach through the loop, hook the other loop, and pull it back through. I've since improved to the point that I dont need to carry it with me anymore, though. Another aid I still use is to help tie nail knots. I just keep a piece of heavy line, with a loop tied in the end of it in a vest pocket. I wrap my nail knot wraps around the loop, keeping the end of it out past the wraps, then pass the tag through the loop and pull the loop out from under the wraps, carrying my tag end with it. This method results in smaller wraps than the tool I tried, making it easier for me to tighten down.

It's also more or less free.

This is true, the curling of the tail and the way that it flops are vital peices of information to identify the ever elusive bowfinbrown trout.....
