How far up are the steelies?

I want to try and fish for steelhead for the first time this year, I heard they're in the cricks and am driving from 3 hours away so I don't have any time to drive around all day. Any help is appreciated... is a 6' ugly stick ok?

It's still to early for the fish to arive in any numbers. It doesn't matter how far away you are coming from.. get out and walk.

For your first time out a 6' ugly stick will work fine. Till you figure out what works and then you may want to upgrade to a noodle or fly rod.

    Welcome to the madness.

To add to what Tim said, this is a good time of year to go up and check out the streams you'll be dealing with in the fall. I went up last year in late August (before I ever fished for steelhead) and walked along Elk, Walnut, and checked out trout run. Also located vital POIs like restaurants, campsites, PRs, BAC, etc. I'm used to the "normal" freestone streams from my area, and the shale beds of walnut really we're interesting for me to check out. I was glad I went up when there were no people around, and I actually did see my first two steelies swimming around! (I told two older gentlemen walking by that I'd seen them and they did everything but tell my I was full of $hit and/or on drugs.)

Anyway, even if you cant find steel, there's probably some fish to catch on presque isle, so it wont be a "wasted trip" like so many people like to say. When was the last time you took a weekend trip to go fishing, and came back saying, "****, I should've stayed home and cleaned the bathroom!"???

To tell you the truth BASSguru, there is NO steelies in the creek at this point, that's why I was joking around because I literally thought you were joking... if you find one, it would be the first one I have seen since May...If you want to come up for some early season. I would come up at the end of August, beginning of September. I would recommend something other than a 6' Ugly Stik as well. There is a bait shop up here that sells cortland noodle rods 9-11' (I think) for $50..Poor Richards...Invest in one of them and you wouln't regret it...

Second on what Cold said. I did the same. Picked a summer day and burned a tank of gas in Erie. Got on google maps and satellite and researched. Searching the old forums might hold some nuggets of info here and there. If you have a gps on your phone or car, take it with you in your research travels. Mark spots you'll want to check out later when the season picks up.

It can be very frustrating (and intimidating) to go out in the thick of the season and jump in with the crowd having never done it before. I usually start with the ever winning ice breaker, "how's it going today?" to anyone I happen to run into. About 90% of the people I've chatted with on the tribs have been really nice folks. Been offered files and such a number of times. Plus, it's more fun to fish with someone else sometimes than trying to find a vacant corner all alone.

Chances are, when the steel do start running, you'll run into a few folks either on the boards, in person, or a local bait shop that might be able to pass on some info and maybe make a friend or two.

Oh, and an honest, "welcome to this forums" to you, bASSguru!

Giving flies away never ceases to put a smile on my face... ran into a father/son (kid was 11-12yrs old) who drove in from NJ last fall. Didn't have a clue as to what they were doing, never fished for anything even in fresh water before. I gave them the basics to get started... showed them a good place to go since the kid didn't have waders and when I gave him a handful of flies and jigs he couldn't believe it. They had an absolute blast.

1st off....  no one is gonna take you serious with a screen name like that so change it asap.

2nd.... your question can't be serious, and if it is, get off the internet and figure it out for yourself where the steel are like everyone else does

    3rd....  fa-q

The fish won't start coming till august but your best bet is fishing pier with heavy spoons since its 30-40 feet of water some come in during the evening. Some years you can get them in early august some you'll have to wait til the end of august. can you guys pray for my mom tonite because tomorrow shes having her surgery to remove the tumor. Just pray for her that she makes it out to live another day. Thanks

As long as you have a Zebco 33 on it.....

SLick, I am sick of you fishing snobs busting on my setup. lol... i have a 7 foot ugly stick with the premium zebco reel on it and I do better than 75% of the guys i see fishing.

The fish cant see the reel or the rod, as long as the drag is reliable, you will be fine.  I had the 3rd biggest steelhead registered in 2008 (14lbs 3 ounces) and this march I released another that over 13 pounds, so you can't tell me that you cannot catch fish on a zebco/ugly stick setup.  My landing rate is slightly over 50% when using a single hook with egg sacs.

noodle rods are for noodle heads.

Witness my 'mickey mouse' setup in the following picture.

"A Homewood man led police on an hourlong car chase that ended with a crash injuring three officers.

"The car was driving itself," Wright said. "The car has a GPS. It's a Lincoln Navigator. They drive themselves. I wasn't running nowhere."
