Unfotunately you are not correct Mike. If you have a valid Ohio license you can keep as many as you want. Heres the link:

I, for one, have had good experience with amish sportsman.

mike, i think everyone knows that i am tolerant of all, except for myself.  i have met many really nice amish, have done business in their stores and such.  however, i have never met an amish sportsman.  fishing or hunting.  so many times they have trespassed onto the land that i had permission or have endured countless stories from buddies about the same.  i have gabbed with them while fishing, but saw undersize walleye many times on stringers and hated myself for saying nothing.  they live by a different code when it comes to hunting and fishing.  no hate for them, just disgust that they circumvent the laws.  other than that, they are a hard working people.

Then they should fish by a different lake. One that isnt maintained by revenue from law-abiding anglers.

I didn't ever realize that this was a widespread thing. Any culture has its bad apples, but it seems like an inordinate majority of amish hunters/fishers feel that if their religion mandates that they do something, it doesnt matter what the law says.

Amish are all in how you want to take them, they are literally hunting and fishing machines.. they don't stop, and never quit. I've had good and bad experiences with them. Do they take game animals and fish that most would consider too small, yes but thats how they are.. its usually legal afterall. Run ins in deer and bear season though can get you rather upset, but its all in how you want to take them.

Here in Ohio the "Blue Navy" is strong as ever on Lake Erie. I fish out of Vermilion most the time and they are thick. And here is my opinion based on experience...... they keep ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. They get caught double and triple dipping EVERY YEAR. They are great fisherman. They make good cheese. But VERY, VERY POOR SPORTSMAN.

NOw before someone pulls a racist card on me, I'm not saying ALL are like this but most I have delt with.

Didnt this smae type of thread go on about Russians???

They do purchase hunting and fishing license so therefore they can fish and hunt in PA. If you know the are breaking the law call the fish or game commission. They will get cited the laws are no different for them than anyone else.

Ditto BD.... nothing different about Amish people. Pretty sure there are others slaying panfish too. Better carpenters than me I know that and I ain't half bad. Emanuel Erb at Conneautville Canvas makes the best roofs and boat covers and for a better price than the "temporary" ones.

Wouldn't it be great if they were after sheephead and white bass on Erie though
.

Hey Einstein....Emanuel isn't Amish, he is Menonite!

I guess that makes it ok for the PA forum now. The point is everyone is complaining that they see Amish keeping tons of panfish as the one poster stated. So on the panfish(bluegills, crappies, perch, white bass) they are allowed to do it. There are tons of Amish from around the Andover area that fish the lake like crazy. So it doesn't really matter if its a PA or OH thing. They can keep as many panfish as they can catch. On those species they are within the law. Now keeping short walleye is another matter

I agree, most that I have met have no sportsman's ethics at all, but nonetheless, if it's totally legal to shoot 2 deer a day, and keep all the fish that one can catch with no size limit. There no sense in calling the Amish out...

Sure it does, the original post for this thread was complaining because the Amish were keeping tons of panfish from Pymie. Implying that they must be breaking the law in some way. When in fact they are not. If your moral compass directs you to only keep a few and throw the rest back I applaud you for that,I feel the same way. But to argue that they are not ethical or moral by the standards that you set for yourself has no bearing on the subject. Trust me I know a few Amish, and nothing gets wasted. Probably can't say the same for some of the Erie fisherman that pound the perch everyday ,that end up in the freezer and then get discarded because they get freezer burned. So by those standards I guess those fisherman would also be short on ehtics. They took there legal daily limit but did not utilize them. The bottom line is if they keep what they are allowed to keep and stay within the rules set forth by PA & OH then that should be the end of the discussion. If you feel that strongly then contact the PA & OH policy makers and voice your concerns that you feel in this case the Amish are decimating the panfish populations on Pymie and that a creel  limit should be imposed.

Wow...learn something new everyday!
Than in my eyes, they (amish) are doing nothing wrong and shouldn't be bashed for keeping 10 or 1,000. Infact, I have more respect for them than the guys who stock freezers full of perch and walleye and end up throwing 80% away the next spring. Atleast with the amish, EVER fish will be eaten most likley!

even the undersized ones, and those that are over their limit.  and believe me, i have seen it.  two years ago, during deer season, i personally saw them loading a pile (A PILE) of deer into a utility trailer hooked up to a passenger van.  both days, they drove across the private land we were hunting, and the adjoining land where they had no permission.  there was a group of about ten of us yankees just shaking our heads.  but at least they will eat them all, right?  nice people, but no respect for game laws.

RE: AMISH NAVY AT PYMIE 2009/07/22 13:00:54 (permalink)
A couple weeks ago in Linesville, I saw a caravan (3 or 4 carts) of Amish take turns urinating (maybe more) on the ground next to someone's shed on private property. This was at an intersection in town in broad daylight. They just pulled up, hitched, and went. The women and children too. Probably more than 15 total. I was waiting for the ice cream place to open and when I realized what they were doing, I moved my car so it wasn't facing the spot they picked.

I can deal with the turds on the highway. Whatever - it goes away and it's a natural byproduct. Our cars probably put out more junk than the horses do.

I don't mind waiting to go around them on the road and have even offered to give a lift once or twice.

But doing your business on someone's private property in broad daylight for everyone in the world to see? Especially when there are Sheetz/Country Fair/etc right down the road. Heck, even go on down the road and go in the woods. I'd be totally PO'ed if someone did that in my yard - next to my shed or anywhere else on the property.

Just me here, but I think that kind of behavior is sick, disgusting, arrogant and rude.

Ha. I'm not really. The story goes... Once upon a time a fisherman named Harry was in desperate need of refreshment after a long and unsuccessful day of fishing. He went to Linesville and, much by accident, found an ice cream place that made the most bestus and goodest ice cream in the world. It was some kind of yellow cake ice cream. Trading bite of cold, sweet ice cream for gulp of hot, bitter coffee rejuvenated the weary fisherman to the point that he could go back out on the lake and catch every remaining fish in it.

Actually, this was a couple years ago. I could never remember the name and found it by accident again two or three weeks ago. I was there an hour before opening (which was at 11am). In the meantime I was graced with the Amish train relieving themselves on the poor guy's shed.

The yellow cake ice cream ranks right up there with my (now second) favorite, the asbestos blizzard.

I think the joint's name is Rauscher's Ice Cream, by the way.
