I was out and about yesterday, taking care of some things needing taken care of and on our way home just at sunset, we passed a field where what before our eyes did appear but, eight elusive Penna. White Tailed Deer. π Didn't see any head gear and all were calmly grazing (or brazingπ€I can't remember which they do with no front teef) The deer I mean, the deer don't have no front teef. No other traffic around so I made an exit from our vehicle to do a little C & R hunting. All was going well and the animals acted like I wasn't even there as I peered through the sights of my camera..... err phone. Then suddenly, the creatures bolted toward the underbrush along fields edge, only allowing for a blurred shot of two of the animals. Guess I shouldn't have yelled "everyone look here and say cheese" Stupid deer!!! Attachments are not available: Download requirements not met

Great story band experience CS.
I just bought carved deer piece of art because it reminded me of the last buck I shot hunting with my Dad.

Thanks again for the kind words everyone. Took a walk back in this afternoon to try and find the bolt. Double lunged this deer, but hit the far side leg and busted it resulting in no pass thru. Glad I saw/heard where the deer went down 40yds away last night, because he didn't drop a speck of blood except for where he went down. Found the broadhead in him while gutting last night snapped off at the threads. No sign of my bolt anywhere??? Not that it matters, just find it odd that its not laying around somewhere close. Maybe he ripped it out and whizzed it like a javelin thrower as one last f-u.

Congrats CS,
Few years back, I hit a ten pt in the shoulder blade, while he was running away I watched him run past a tree busting off my arrow, the **** thing flew about ten yds away from the deer nowhere near where it ran, maybe the bolt started to work lose and did something similar? I got good penetration on that deer about 13 inches of the arrow was broken off and it only made it about 70 yds. No blood of course.

Beautiful calm, cool morning. Didn't see a deer from the stand. Stayed put until a little after 10, pulled a card (just doe), then did some scouting. Only one small new scrape, one old one with leaves in it and only a handful of rubs. Kicked out 2 or 3 UFOs on my walk and that was it. Hopefully it starts to pick up.

Seemed like a good week to stick one in crawford county. Same night I shot my buck, a guy at work got a doe. He text me tonight and shot a buck out of the same stand. Had another friend smack a doe on Thursday.

Never done any of the swirl paints on mine, but they do look kinda cool. I just enjoy the simple skull mount in my garage over sawing off the skull plate with the horns. Granted I don't have a lot of them, but honestly the time it takes to skin one, boil it, and bleach it gives me time to remember the hunt and all of the details that went with it.

The older I get the more I like skull mounts (European). I've done 5... I sorta stick to doing older nicer bucks...but that's because there a time consuming task..... I got a 12 pts in Ohio 4 years ago and did the skull mount....it scored 142 7/8....my friends though I was crazy not to mount it.....what I really like is you can put it in your hands and admire them. Second part BTDT.......how the he-- do you get close enough to a deer to check if the glad is dark.....lol....been snorted at tonight and last night had a Jr model buck....Button..... at 10 yards....lol bad luck is better than no luck....lol

ha haa....π»π
I never tried euro mounts. First, a guy needs to get a stupid deer to do that but other than that minor detail, euro mounts are cool.
Many moon ago and a few years past that, a friend of mine did euro mounts from deer to woodchucks.
Heads of birds and small animals like 'chucks' remained nailed to a tree, letting mother nature do her thing.
Deer and some farm animals were skinned and boiled or placed in an ice chest, maggots added and sreen placed over the cooler to keep hatched flys reproducing more maggots until the skull was free of the tasty stuff including the brain.
The part I found most interesting was the bleaching. Cold bleach vs hot bleaching and keeping the bleach from making contact with any part of the antler was always a challenge, especially at the base.
Anybody wanting to see 'swirl painting' euro mounts need only search Youtube. Younz may need to watch a few different vids to find the experts but, there is some interesting & very nice work.

Big Tuna just walk right up and ask if it's OK if ya take a look at their glands. π Surely you jest, a hunter with such experience as yours cannot see the difference of the tarsals of a deer in estrus? πYour busting my ....... right?π»

If I ever do get a "wall hanger" buck I will probably do the same as you Tuna with the skull mount. Its definitly nice being able to take them down and admire them. Plus... I'm way too cheap to ever get a shoulder mount or the like π. I might pay for one of those "bugs to bones" deals though for a truly nice buck.

In my favorite hunting stand bright and early after sun up. 40 to 50 yds and darned if I could find my real tree, rubber coated, 10 x 20 power, anti-glare coated lense looking glass. Probably because I couldn't find my eyeglasses which is the reason I couldn't see the phone power button in-turn creating a smudge, on the camera lense from a finger print, causing a slightly less than, perfect picture. From what I 'could' see, no sign of estrus but ain't they sooooo darned cute???π Attachments are not available: Download requirements not met

Although not archery per se, I invite a retired state trooper to hunt the senior rifle season. He came out Thursday morning and Friday evening, but saw nothing.
He was to come out this evening too, but did not. At 5:30, two antlerless (what is legal for seniors) came out of the woods and fed to within 10 yards of the blind I had set up for him (I can see it from the house). To add insult to injury, while one continued to feed, the other one laid down right in front of the blind. They stayed for 45 minutes before being joined by another.
Just goes to show...

My wife punched her buck tag last night. Watched it for about an hour feeding and near last light it worked into range. Put a clean shot on it, fell over 50 yards later before it could enter the thick stuff. Despite my best efforts I canβt get the photo to load in correct ordination. Everyone should be able to understand.
