I’m glad I took it down. The wind here was brutal last night. It was hard enough to blow over the folder umbrella in an outdoor umbrella table with concrete base. I’ll be chasing furniture cushions while the dogs do their morning thing.

Made it out this morning to a stand somewhat out of the wind. Little guys are getting the show started. Had a doe come crashing thru a little before 8, few minutes later here comes two 6 pts(one legal) and a small 8 pt. They pushed her around me for about a half hour, had a few opportunities to shoot both legal bucks but passed in hopes of one of their older relatives showing up, which didn't happen. Sat till noon seeing 3 more doe.

Buddy and I hunted my place tonight. Not a deer seen between the 2 of us. Guess I shouldn't have slept in this morning seeing as there was a fresh scrape in front of the stand I sat in.

It was an epic day where I was hunting. Seen 12 bucks. 6 legal ones. Passed up two 8 points. One I probably should have shot. Had a shooter come by me at first light but I needed him to come another 10 yards and he didn't. I messed up at last light. Had another shooter sneak in on me right at the end of legal shooting time. I couldn't get a good read with my rangefinder so I guessed for 30 and shot under him, I think. The arrow was clean. When I retrieved the arrow, it looked closer to 40 from the ground. Great day but no blood drawn.

Nice... congratulations to your dad.

Picture question, do you hold your phone horizontal when taking your pictures? I'm just trying to figure out why your pictures flip when I turn my phone for a better view.

I hold my phone landscape when taking photos. They look fine in my album, but loads upside down on forum. Then I flip them upside in my album thinking it should fix it. Nope still loads on forum upside down. I re-save the photos in their sides and they are at least understandable when I load them sideways.

Thanks for taking the time to answer Anz. Pictures are worth a thousand words and I enjoy seeing the story and the smile on your dad's face tells it all.

Problem being, I turn my phone for a better look and the pic flips back the other way.

I've been slowly driving myself toward more meds, trying to figure why my phone does this.

Thanks again.

Don't blame you for passing up 8's.  You got rutcation coming to get a bigger one.   I haven't seen any bucks on stand yet.  Will hit the bushes every day this week.

Re: Archery season 2019 2019/11/03 09:48:27 (permalink)
I finally heard a shot at 10:00 yesterday morning.

Saw four does at 8:00 on the neighbor’s across the creek. Nothing pursuing them (that is the word around this area — no bucks chasing anything with all photos still after dark). At 10, I see a lone deer bounding through the woods. At one point I can make out it is a tank doe — we have 3-4 really d does in the immediate area that haven’t had fawns in the last two years — through the trees.

The the words of she who must be obeyed ring in my head — we are out of deer meat, so shoot something. After last year’s trip to Africa, I wrongly deemed myself a Great White Hunter, and went all in for a trophy buck at home or nothing. Of course, the result was nothing. I’ve have heard the end of the lack of venison since.

So when she stopped between my 30 and 40 yard markers in the shooting lane, I centered the 30 and 40 yard crosshairs and let the bolt fly.

I could see the luminock enter perfectly and hear the hit. The deer went back the way it came until I lost sight of it.

I went to where I shot and could not find the bolt — really looked about 30 seconds. Went up to the house and took care of the dogs and got out of the cold weather gear (25 degrees).

Took my wife with me (so she would be as insistent on this any deer thing). Of course, she found the bolt right away — the luminock was switched off. Using her to mark last blood, we trailed it for 60 yards before finding it.

So with meat in the cooler, the pressure is off and I can hunt horns for the rest of the season.

Of course, this morning while out with the dogs, I see a dandy buck, could clearly see antlers at 175 yards as cut from the neighbor’s field to our woods. Hopefully Tuesday we get to meet. Or is that meat?

It was. For guys that don't sit late morning and early afternoon, they are missing out. Saw 5 bucks between 11 and 12:30.

All of the chasing was smaller bucks. The big guys were just cruising so I think it is not quite here yet where I was hunting. The end of this coming week, things will probably slow a tad for some lock down. But Next week, it should pick back up again.

Haven’t had a buck on camera during the daylight in more than a month (except a one horn that showed between the time I shot the doe and when we went to retrieve it).

Hopefully this week will be better.

I’ve only done this archery thing for a short time (this is my 3rd season) and I’ve never witnessed the rut thing that all y’all keep talking about. Hopefully this week.

DarDy definite something to witness especially if you're lucky to witness bucks fighting for dominance.

Of course a quick search on Youtube will get you live vids but still, to experience the actual battle.

Interesting, what we miss in our own back yards, over the years.

Good luck.

Re: Archery season 2019 2019/11/04 11:40:09 (permalink)
I $crewed up this AM and missed a chip shot at a nice 8 or 10.  20 yds but I had to be on my tip toes to shoot behind me and over some branches.  I think I clipped something on the way to the deer and a clean miss, which is the consolation.  He jumped 10-15 feet after the shot, looked around, and then walked off....I tried grunting him back in but that only stopped him briefly.

Morning started off slow.  No deer seen until 8am or so and I look through the woods into the neighbors field and a see a nice sized deer trotting away.  Got the binocs up quickly and could see it was a nice buck, with a rack out past its ears but thats all I could glean from 175 yds away looking through trees.  About 20 min. later, I see some deer working through the pines below me and the ended up being 2 doe and 2 fawns.  20 min. more go by and a small 7 pt. comes in and starts kicking at a rotted stump and eating something.  He spends a good 5 min. there.  He walks by me at 20 yds and I give him the pass.  I'll try to post up the vid.

https://youtu.be/5REBzLh6U8o (7 point that got the pass)

He gets above me and I see he's looking back my way but I don't think he saw me.  Might have heard me closing up the camera.  He walks another 20 yds into the heavy brush and then I see him take off, tail up, up the hill.  WTH?  2 min. go by and here comes a yote.  I was sitting so no real chance for me to get a shot.  It was 30 yds behind me.  He started to skitter off when I grabbed my bow but I stopped him and he came back a few yds with some mouth squeaks.  Then, the 7 pt. starts snorting away up on top of the hill and the yote ambles up that way.
Just about to call it a day and at 855 I see a nice rack working its way to me.  I got brief vid of it then I got ready.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLzP8R53-0I (8 or 10 pt I missed) didn't count pts.

It hit the same stump the 7 pt. hit and then followed almost the same trail behind me.  I drew and let down twice on him and finally, I thought i had my shot.....but blew it.
I guess the other good thing, my trail cam that is 10 yds from my tree stand has 6 or 7 different bucks on it in the last week, with 2 possible shooters.  Downer is, 2 different people on the cam and one definitely saw it and was shining a flashlight @ it.

Best sit so far this year for me.
