PAFISHER
Wish you had fared better up top but thanks for the report.
Have felt that -based on reports and some salt grains- mid to lower is presently the best bet.
Good luck on the rest of the trip.
2BOB-
Glad you have found some.

Saw one report with the same guy and same fish posted on 2 stories hours apart--lol
Another( seemed spot on IMHO) said they are still "trickling" in.
Think we are in for a big push very soon- if at all- remember sometimes it just keeps going on like this, but, most others a bigun or two also happens.

Was up this time of Sept for many years in a row and it was sometimes dicey and sometimes great as they spread in the system ---all while way down low was experiencing good mornings and evenings.

Jack, I miss not spending time with you on the water. Thanks for the call yesterday and I hope your at least getting some fun in.
There is absolutely no way I can deal with a circus crowd or timing casts just for a fish.
Maybe they will go away after today

Sorry to see this report. I just got back from 4 days on the coast and it was phenomenal weather and scenery, only 50 or so schoolies to 27".  I'm glad I went. Looking down 6 miles of beach at a dramatic sunrise this morning and zero people, I appreciate it even more after this report. I hope to get there in Oct. , more likely later when some steel are upriver.  Keep at it, thanks for the reports.

I will concur I was an ABOLUTE mad house , people everywhere and honestly did not seem like alot of fish. We went to LFZ and honestly got a decent spot. Hooked a few good ones and fouled a few. I did not want to leave , but my buddy did,  BIG MiSTAKE . Fished a few other spots , but not in decent waters as there were people everywhere. On top of that I could only fish with my right ,nondominant arm casting with left was a no go. Did more standing and spaceholding even handed off the pole to my buddy most times if I hit one. Saw DEC in plain clothes giving tickets a trestle LOL. If you were in a good spot fish were there in pools nd deeper water  and not really moving alot. I personally did not feel they are in  there in huge numbers.

Weekends are NOT a time to be on the SR.
Don't care how many fish are around- weekends are a circus.
That includes the last half of Fridays too.

There are a lot of factors that contribute to the zoo.
Free fishing days in NY, stupid Facebook pages leading sheep and yes, the folks that only have weekends to get out.
We get the same deal here on the mighty Hudson when stripers run. At least there is 200 miles to spread out.

A good cold rain might pull a bunch of people north or west, but until we get that the SR and the Oz, maybe the Black ( talk that one up they put a LOT of salmon in the Black, nowhere near the crowds to my knowledge) are the only places drawing significant numbers of fish.  As to numbers, they boxed a lot of fish on the lake over the summer, and DEC does not care a whit what comes back as long as they get the required numbers for egg take.

Well today was much better, crowds thinned out every where,I had no one within 300 yds of me until around 9;30 ,then a couple showed up but did n't crowd me.I managed several hook ups with some hard takes.I did not land any but had a few epic battles. From what I could tell they were fresh, frisky Coho.I was near my secret spot way up river.I quit right after noon,I'm here until SAT, so I have plenty of time.

Good to hear Jack. Weekend warriors kinda make up the mass. I should have just bit the bullet and fished with you today.
A coworker went over the weekend and went to get his spot at 3am, it was already taken. He left for home Sunday morning disgusted and didn't fish yesterday.

I'm glad your getting into good fishing

To me fishing is supposed to be fun- not getting up so early that I get to a certain spot at 3am and hanging around locking down that spot till its light enough to fish.
Even worse, one may suppose, for the guy who was already there -lol.
IMHO that aint fun.

Got out late today,9:30,got same spot as yesterday, hookrd a Steely right away, lost it at the bank.A little while later tied into a fresh King,it almost tore my thumb off on a run in fast heavy water. It was way into my running line and I broke it off.Hooked into a few more and then my engine wore out,so I quit for the day.Tomorrow I will hit it again.
It was too hot today, the crowd was thin but it was not empty.

Nice reports- glad you are into them.
Found the Kings to be VERY strong a couple of weeks back too- fresh and fiesty.
Not overly thrilled with my trip next weeks outlook without a big push within a day or so.
I know they are spread out but -as a guide actually said today- still just trickling in.

Anyone hear about a drift boat that hit the trestle and capsized over the weekend? Buddy of mine lives up there and he was telling me. I guess it's a total zoo with the 350CFS.

Today was about the same as before.I find the fish are line shy,I tried a heavier tippet today and not a hit,so I went down to 8lb and had a lot of hits, the only problem was break offs.I had 15-20 on but none to hand.Tomorrow is another day!!

I think we ought to chip in and keep you up there, Jack. That way these reports keep coming.  You've landed  boatloads in your time,  doesn't really matter- the battles do.
How many guides are that hard up to run a boat down on the weekend?  If I was a client I'd be demanding my money back right about the tail of the barrel.

I went today to 3 spots,  in town, mid river and LFZ . All produced the same results zilch. Honestly there were a few fish seen at each place but not numbers. I saw the most on gravel in shallow water during walks, but the rippers were making short work of them. A few boats went by and told me the same with fish being around , but not in huge numbers.  Fishing was difficult as I had to do it with my off hand due to my elbow still barking.

Re: Salmon trip 2019/10/03 11:01:23 (permalink)
Mixed reports are becoming the norm this week--even from the business community up there.
After a kinda early start that seemed to preclude a banner year there has been no big runs and now seem to be downsizing into - as one guide said- a trickle.
Some places haven't even posted reports for a few days after years of daily reporting.
Stuff like 'they are spread throughout the river but thin'  are right up there with the old 'the regulars are getting some' and' the fish are in the river' reports of old --lol.
Too bad -thats fishing- but after the usual pre run talk of huge fish in huge numbers--- this aint it.
Still plenty of time for IT to happen- but that window aint open forever.
Without something real good happening by today the upriver place I prefer will be worth a look but am not holding out any real high expectations for early next week..
Hope to be proven wrong---but then a day of fishing beats anything -even without those big run  memory days.

Was at my same spot today and had 3 on but all broke off, there was some fish movement but not what I would expect for this time period. After I took a break I looked at the LFZ by the church pool and it was EMPTY of anglers, no one on both sides. What does that tell you?The weather might be affecting the fishing today, very raw with a NE wind I never have much luck with a NE wind.

This is what your river views mean to me...
The lake fishing has been absolutely fantastic the last 2-3 years. This my friends is firsthand information.
Now if you believe that there is more predators than forage, blah.
The predator base, besides lake trout is lower than it has been . Some want you to believe that natural reproduction is increasing the predator population , poopy, chock.. this is a ploy..

The fishery was created for the lake charters and they are having their day. With fewer fish, the trib angler are getting the short stick and if L-13 is correct with bigger cuts, the river guys will take a much bigger hit

Re: Salmon trip 2019/10/03 18:47:27 (permalink)
A few years back we had a run that really didn't get much further than Pineville -upriver and the zones never really got going at all.

Lots of lower river spawning-is this that return??
As I recall that was a year of low water and they MAY have had to get some from the Black for egg take, at least there was folks concerned about it.

IMHO the runs of the past few years haven't really spread out over a longer time frame as folks thought was going to happen but have gotten smaller.
Heck when I started ya could stand down in what later became the DSR and look downriver at what seemed to be a big hailstorm hitting the water.
Hail?? - nope FISH TAILS by the thousand coming up. Saw it often too.
I know--- that was low but even upriver when they spread pods of many came past, now a pod is 3 to 4 fish.

Not trying to doom and gloom but when ya can call and get a room at this time of year and the motel has a number of openings and then find the LFZ empty of fisherfolks a week later --something aint right.
