Three signs winter is on it's way....

1. Spiders nesting everywhere.

2. Crickets chirping during the day.

3. Clint & HT harvesting and canning from their gardens.

I'm thinking NOAA watches these two guys and forecast winter longevity based on quarts of beans and salsa canned. lol

Enjoy the read fellas, thanks for the good times and memories. Also, the increased appetite which I do not need, thankyou very much. lmao

Good observations BTDT. I can't walk anywhere without getting Spider-Maned.
Another sign is that the deer are feeding heavy in the fields during the day.
I'm ready for this summer to be over so the real fun can begin 😉

Not sure what it is HT but something, something tells me you are already having fun and enjoying it too.

I hear you on the "real fun", my Eskimo shanty and auger all hanging in the garage with care, in hopes frozen lakes will soon be there.  Hmmm sounds like maybe,  a nursery rhyme could be in there.

Right on about the deer feeding and let's not forget, the excitement in the air, about the fish moving upstream.

In the meantime, keep those harvest reports comin.

Good times and tight lines.

Yes BTDT, I'm having fun complaining. Heat humidity sucks.
Finally mowed my yard, we call a compound, after 3 weeks of not.
Glad the rider still got it somewhat done. I beat the crap outta push mowed used as brush hog. Maybe tomorrow I'll fire up the 6th weedwacker I've owned.

Pleasantly surprised and a 😀 face to find the blackberry were fat today. Lots of animals scurried away when I took over the bushes.
The haul was good and I'll make my last batch jam tomorrow night. Ya know, it's gonna be 5 o'clock somewhere.
Tomatoes still rule. Busy , busy on that detail sat morning. Afternoon will be some local market gigs and in the evening will be songs to fill the air .
We're getting close folks. Fish will come, animal harvesting will come and yes , the ice will too.
Life is good

We are on course.
8 qts sauce made tonight. Best so far and all from my garden. 8 more to make tomorrow. Herbs are key to me :).Another 1/2 bushel peaches that seemed so sweet bought today. 3 heads cauliflower to do and many jalapenos.
Gonna be busy all day.
Good music to soothe my soul

I will be in tomatoes next week (when I am gone fishing) hope they last. Still getting lots of squash, cabbage, eggplants and beans and the corn is now ready. Carrots maybe in 2 weeks. Winter squash is coming nice too.
Not as good as last year, but ok. The chickens have wrecked my strawberries. Either have to fence or move them next year

Very good clint.👍
I also grabbed 1 of 3 new zuchni tonight. We didn't do spaghetti squash. Maybe next year.
If all things stay on course, I should be close to 40 quarts tomato sauce plus salsa.
I'm happy as we do a lot with that product.
Wish and need to get the spuds gig figured out . Room... Very happy with the fruits, well those not paid for .. Garlic and asparagus will be expanded this fall.
My son's chickens are producing about 6 eggs per day from his 24. His meat chicks are getting bigger. My pigs are in the 200 lbs range. Hunting and fishing ( ice ) seasons are coming. All of which above will be a big savings throughout the tough times of winter.
Things are looking good here.
While I miss the great lake adventures during summer but I'd do this all over again.

Enjoy your time fishing. You deserve that trip

Yesterday's sauce and just some of today's pick. Lots to do.
Probably one last look before they hit the freezer. They are about 200 lbs

The pigs are looking ready to go HT... hard to believe how small they were just a few months ago!
Meat birds are the same way... cute for about two weeks then by 8-10 weeks you are past ready for butcher day(s). We have done up to 50 in a year when sharing with family but for just us I like doing around 20.... but we get a bunch of roosters to butcher from broody hatches all summer. They get canned. We have 6 or 8 more to do before vacation next week.

We surpassed our goal and with today's run , have successfully canned 36 qts of tomato sauce. By the looks of things I should get another 15-20 qts plus more salsa . I did a bunch of pickled mixed veggies yesterday as well. I'm waiting for the wife to show me how to use the pressure cooker, it's electric.
Today is peach day.

Your quite right fisherlady, those pigs grew fast and I'm about ready to see them go in the freezer and smokehouse.
My son got some meat chickens just a few weeks ago and they are already pretty big. For sure doing them next season myself.
The goal here is to buy very LITTLE produce and meats . So far I will only be getting beef.
We will have plenty pork, chicken and venison.

Enjoy your day. I'm going to start building an ark, yup it's raining again 😶

Let's give this some thought, 36 qts of tomato sauce with another 15 to 20 qts possible, plus more salsa added to all the precipitation this summer, means I ain't waiting for no dam ground hog to tell me it's gonna be a long winter with plenty of snow.

I'm thinkin' I should be headin' south real soon.......   via HT's, to pick me up sum of that yummy sounding sauce and salsa.

You could start a grocery store from what you are storing Rich, too bad the Mud Sharks are so nasty or we could process them for the winter.I tried them one time years ago and threw it in the garbage, they're called MUD Sharks for a reason.

Yes Trevor. I don't ever remember not having multiple deer hanging as long as I been alive. I been in the woods hunting since kindergarten. School used to just ckeck me off for being absent during deer season.
I can pick them off at will in my yard if I wish.
Passing on doe early has been my only defeat. Last 2 years I've held 5 doe permits , not counting the freebies on bow but haven't hung 1 yet. I'm going there first as I have a cold hang storage available.

Jack,
My long term retirement is to farm. There is some sweet roadside building from a group that tried I'd like to buy but it's not for sale.
I live for the days of trading posts and barter again.

10 qts peaches done. I'm done with peaches unless wife wants to jam.

Stop over anytime BTDT.

Rich-
Much of my Dads family was Sioux and my wife's had  a lot of Cherokee.
Although we didn't hunt much when I was a kid it was apparently deep ingrained in me.
Started very very young with homemade bows and arrows graduating into Dept store stuff and spent hours and hours afield.
Lots of Rabbits bit the dust back then lol.
IMHO fishing and small game is all secondary to Deer.
Used to spend all Spring and Summer patterning home ranges of biguns and waiting long hours to see and watch them.
Took far more than my share by doing homework ( ate them too) - hard quiet sneaky work pays.

My grandfather was raised in an orphanage outta Missouri. He taught my father and my family how to provide from living through the depression era.
We certainly do things differently now but the skills are there.
Honestly, there is very little substance from a deer. It takes many. We would tan the hides making clothes and sell the legs for decoration at the trading post . City folk wanted a place to hang their guns that looked cool.
I'm into the farming and short term raising to put meat in the freezer.

Don t know about the winter based on tomatoes. If that's the case it's going to be a short one here in snow country because I can count on one hand all the tomato I have picked so far! Rain then none, then hot then rain did not bite well here. The corn however seems to be holding it's own.

My chickens have all but stopped laying with and I am going through 2 5 gallon buckets of feed plus a week. I am wondering if the turkeys are freaking them out. With 11 chickens I am getting only a few eggs each day aside from my leg horns which have been most consistent layers. At this point my eggs are costing me $5 A dozen lol. Turkeys are up there in the high teens and will go soon.

Today's pick so far between rain drops, yes it's raining. I still have lots of herbs to pick and dehydrate yet tonight.
I'm going to start pulling the cukes asap. We had enough at 48 jars plus the 12 mixed veggies and I want the room to replant beans which didn't do so hot this year. Tomatoes are still cranking, pigs like them too.
Speaking of which,
Their date with fate is set. September 10th.
A good local butcher is coming here to dispatch and haul them to his shop. Super simple reasonable and I trust his quality.

Gotta run folks , lots to do in the RAIN, like building an ark

Nice Clint.
Local corn we had tonight was terrible.
Pigs didn t mind.
Aside from the green beans That are starting to produce good, I'm going to start working on pulling my garden.
Cauliflower is done, zucchini and cukes as well.
Peppers, carrots ,herbs and tomatoes will be what's left until frost .
After the pigs are done Sept 10th, I'm into hunting/ fishing / winterization mode.
With our freezers empty, they will be getting a workout soon.

A bit more thought will go into next year's crops. It seems freezing may be more efficient in some produce.

Nice Clint.
Last deluge has passed, next on on its way soon. Humidity is ridiculous. I couldn't imagine fishin in this without wet wading and swimming. My brother in law just arrived on his great lake adventure for the week. Don't think I'll make the lake this season myself.
Peaches done, 8 more qts tomato sauce in the pot and salsa tomorrow.
.

For us here, we are mud people. I remember my green day experience in 94, about the same today

52 qts to date not counting salsa.
From looks, remaining tomatoes will be salsa.

Won't be much left here after this weekend.
Cukes, zucchini, cauliflower all pulled. Pickled last of veggies last night. Tomatoes are hanging in and should get some yield.
To date we got 56 qts sauce, 18 pints salsa and various single usage. I call it a success.
Seems 30 plants is the magic number.
We can't keep peaches on the shelf. Gonna try and get another 1/2 bushel.
We are going to start focusing on jam = apricot, peach and blueberries.
Beans are starting to come in good and I could probably get another yield of lettuce and spinach but im lazy now focusing towards meat.

Pretty sure I mentioned my daughter is in a beef co op. We been eating mostly farm raised foods, including our families, in last few weeks and must say what a difference. There is not 1 person in my family who disagrees. Downfall, all, most the weight is on my labor ( of love).💪
In no way would I raise a cow but I'd sure spend the money on filling my freezer.
As is the goal here now, farm fresh 🤠 , homegrown is good .

6 more years folks and I'm free to the time clock
