Re: PYMATUNING FISHING REPORT 2017/05/11 22:15:02 (permalink)
OK so I'm a bit late with my report, however that ain't nothing new.  Anyways I went fishing but  before hitting the end of my driveway, I had a change in plan and did not go to Pymie.  Therefore, those who may  be expecting a report about Pymie should go directly to the next thread and those expecting a "spot burn" should know by now such information is a nooo no, on these forums, and also know I am a staunch believer in keeping promises.

For those yet interested; I had a absolutely wonderful day fishing.  STUPID FISH!!!!!   No, I mean, literally "stupid fish"!!!

Any fish willing to eat a plastic thing with tentacles hanging off of it;  has to be stupid and deserves to be taken to dinner.

After launching, I turned on the Helix and was instantly amazed at how much the water temperature had dropped.  Exactly one week ago, the temp was 62.5 degrees and now, the temp was reading 56.  Looked like it was going to be another washout, especially since I was not marking one little fishy picture on the sonar.

Well being persistent and somewhat bull headed angler that I am, I tied a 1/32 oz jig tipped with a black and chartreuse tube and fired to the back of a shallow bay.  The fake bait didn't have time to sink before it was hit by a feisty 6" Gill, with the heart of a freight train.   Now it was game on with practically ever cast being whacked by other Gills just as feisty, with some smaller and a few approaching 7".   Good times I thought, what a ball until reality returned and I was reminded,  these fish were not Bass and I was not on Bass Masters TV.

The entire day was about Blue Gill with a occasional Crappie here or a Perch there until just before sunset when the Crappie turned on.  Not many over 8 inches but still a good time til dark set in and that's when I was reminded, my electronics and live well had been running since morning.  The Helix was out of sight as I sat in the bow of the boat all day, so when I returned to the drivers seat, I was a bit surprised to see the screen was dark.  Not to worry, the Helix didn't quit working as I had first assumed.  Nope, wasn't a problem at all 'cause the sonar turns off automatically when the battery voltage drops below a certain percent NOR... does the boat motor TURN OVER!!!!!!

I'm not one to get frantic over such a minor problem and I am also glad there was no one fishing anywhere near me on shore as I am positive yinz would have seen me on YouTube, Facebook or Twitter by now.  So after a brief panic attack I calmly increased the throttle to full open, pulled the choke to full on position, placed my fingers on the key while looking skyward vowing to never "spot burn" again I hit the starter and it was errr...err.... clickity click!   Letting go of the key, I began to weigh my options, use what electric motor I had left to get to shore and hoof it back to the dock (about 6 miles).  Use the electric motor and hopefully get to mid channel and hope what breeze was blowing would get me closer to the dock, scream for my mommy???

But then, looking skyward once more, placing my hand on the key and saying I promise, I hit the starter again.  ERR..... Err.... clickity..... errr... er.... VAROOM!!!  Well, maybe not varoom but the little Yamaha 15 strutted her stuff as I kicked off the choke and let her run at top idle till I saw the volt meter begin to inch it's way from 10 to 12 volts, then it was in gear and hammer down for the dock.

I do have, for such occasions, a emergency cord by which to try and start the little 15 and had I tried that procedure and the motor didn't start on the first pull, I assure you, I would be poplar on the social media tonight.

Tight lines are just around the corner so get out there and fish.

Crappie_Slayer thank you. It sure was a good time and as we know, catching some fish adds to the fun.

I doubt I'll ever wear-out the cleaning table but I'm gonna enjoy trying. lol

Ha haa, thanks psu.

Toooo many hours of running the live well (stupid fish) plus electronics and running lights over a period of days with little botor moating to recharge my start battery. 27M DieHard which is suppose to serve as reserve trolling motor battery. Stupid battery!!!

Tight lines of May; are upon us.

Believe it or not, just a plain white, 3/8 oz twister tail jig, just reeled slow along the bottom......for the walleyed that is. Actually started fishing for crappies but just caught the two. Then went deeper for the walleyed. Wasn't expecting much but......

Nice, sounds like the eyes are post spawn stage.  Congrats, nice looking haul Puddlejumper.

Good fish pics.  Not sure if they are considered fish porn, if no beer can/bottle in the photos though?

BTDT - Easy solution.  Cooler with ice.  No need for live well for pan fish.  Nice slab.  Good story.  Glad you made it off safely, although would have made for some good Youtube...

Thanks fellas and it happened again today. Loads of fun.

Puddlejumper nice catch, congratulations. Low and slow with a jig is how I caught most of my fish. Almost "dead sticking" and feeling the weight of the fish at the hook set. Cept I didn't catch none of them nice Eyes.

Big Tuna you can bet I'll be spending some time at PI this summer learning the layout for next spring. Noooo way is Marcos gonna have all the fun. Nope!!

Pork, I agree with the ice cooler. Problem is, the way my luck has been the past couple years, all I would be bringing home would be a cooler full of cold water. lol.

Good work there John.
Nice catch. Next time you get a bunch of fish like that, just drop them off at Marco's place. He has a beautiful fish cleaning station and since it probably isn't getting much use, and considering the gentleman that he is, I'm sure he wouldn't mind cleaning them for you.

Yesterday I got together with a dear old old..... old friend, that has been in bad shape for the past 15 years or so.   What a great time we had, going back through the years and boating down memory lane.  What fun, tossing a jig here and a jig there or maybe  a minner under a bobber and watching the red and white floaty thing do the 'fishy dance' before disappearing, beneath the water's surface.   But  the gooder part was seeing such an old friend recuperating and doing so much better with the future possibly getting even brighter.  Looking forward to getting together again tomorrow for more reminiscing and hopefully, a few more fish.

The fish were hungry with better than 60 Crappie alone, very few under 9",  being caught and released.  That was caught and released and not counting the the 16, invited home for dinner.

Had a rather exciting catch that tried to kink the 2401 UL and tested the strength of the 4lb test mono.  Ended up cutting the line cause I didn't have a net big enough to take this old boy (or girl) home for the stew pot.

Turtle soup, delicious. 10-12 pounders are great chunked into bite size pieces dipped in egg wash and breaded and fried. In my younger days did a lot of turtling. Set lines, pulled them out of bank holes and later got smart an bought a turtle trap. Glad your into those crappie BTDT. I believe the season opens July 1st.

Big TunaI believe the season opens July 1st.

I thought BT might have been eating too much turtle meat with this one, but it turns out there IS a season for snappers.  On Pymie you can keep snapping turtles (15 per day) from July 1 - Oct 31.  Learn something new every day.

We always caught them in the rivers.  Last one I caught was walking across the road in front of my house, probably going back to the water after laying eggs in the fields behind my house.  That's a guess based on the babies we find occasionally in our pool filter.  If they weren't such a PITA to clean I'd probably harvest a few each year.  There are some beasts on Arthur.

Remember the days of turtle trapping.
The prep for table fare was kind of a pain though.
Nothing worse than the muscle reflexes long after the turtle was dispatched......always spooky when it happens...especially as a kid!

My wife and I caught a couple bluegills and about 12 perch on Saturday afternoon from our dock a mile and a quarter south of Espyville on the Pa side. We were using minnows and red worms. Six of the perch and on bluegill were big enough to fillet. Had to hook the minnow threw the head or the perch would strip them off without getting hooked. I usually spend my time helping other bait their hooks and get their lines out, but this time I was able to do the catching. Had fun.

The great dilemma this time of year..............

Concentrate on walleyes...........
This was the other night. Only caught one but......(not quite as big as it looks...all in how you hold it,LOL......actually 25", 5 lbs).

Or take the kids for the hotter action of crappies......

easy pick........taking the kids for crappies. How can I say no to that smile!?

I sure had a grand day on the water. Not only were well over a hundred fish caught (and most released) between 3 of us but, I got to share the day with registered and his son. What a pair of fine anglers these two guys are.

Rob and Sam I am looking forward to another great day on the water but the next time, could we please do it on a day with calmer seas. I been home for a couple of hours now and my boat is still rockin'. πŸ˜–

Thanks for the good time fellas. 🍻

Turtle cleaning is not that bad once you do a couple hundred.lol Easy way to dispatch a turtle is a .22 through the top of the noggin. No twitching, just a limp turtle easy to clean. I rather use a trap, that noodling is ah a little different especially if there's a muskrat in the hole and not a turtle. Don't believe they always have their tail side out. lol nice eye and crappie, puddlejumper.
