i agree with wolf i have fished the linesville area a good bit and i will say one thing.  the local guys who fish there during the week are alot more honest than the weekend warriors.  I have seen days where local guys and myself have thrown back quite a few eyes cause they were snaged.  but on the weekend it is a whole different beast.

TT sorry to include the few "fishermen" that actually go there to legaally take some eyes.
Just seems the snaggers out number the good guys by a good margin..

I hear you bings.  I'm all for for the game commission posting up at the spillway to watch over everyone.  Not only would it prevent people from snagging fish but I'm willin to be it would serve to prevent a good portion of the violence.

when the fish cops are sitting there, it doesn't keep people from snagging, it just makes them hide it better.  I have watched them actually net the fish as deep as possible so they can try and pop the hooks out so they can pull the "it was hooked in the mouth till it was netted then they came out".

it really does make me laugh when you release a 20+" eye that was snagged in the cheek (no hooks within 2-3" from the mouth) and the others gasp like "you" just broke the law or something cause they keep them hooked in the tail even...

The worst day hunting or fishing will always be better then the best day at school or work!

That's a shame frost.  I've never been there when the fish po po were there actually watching people fish.  The stop by for a few minutes occasionally and everyone knows they are going to leave, but I figured if they camped out things would change.

I guess as honest anglers we have to take matters into our own hands somehow.

you don't have to be on the wall to catch eyes go to the left or right side and use a floater 1 foot off with a big crawler not every hookup will be an eye but you might catch the next state record carp try to cast to the center of the channel they shift in then out and back in in schools saw this on my 3D hummingbird a couple years ago

Once the show starts maybe anyone who sees someone snagging fish can post a picture of them her. Like wanted posters in the post office in the 1800's.

The higher the better, more current more eyes. The more you spot burn this place the worst it will be. If people don't like the way things go there, don't talk about it or go there,Just like last winter someone (on this site) who I will not mention turn Jamestown into shanty town.It was a nice place one day the next 45 shanty's. Thanks guy, just for a few nice crappie and perch you turned into nutsville.

Oh, the heck with all of it. I'll do my usual thing. I'll get all fired up and gun hoe about it, I'll make the drive up there only to  see all those people there, become discouraged, then head to the Spillway Restaurant and order the Walleye dinner for around 9 bucks. No lie!!!

spot burning? Is what goes on at the spillway over the next month or so a secret in your mind? Tons of people already know about it. Some people are willing to put up with the hassle to catch the fish, others just complain about it.

I hear what you're saying about ice fishing but at the same time it's not like you're trolling the area. You're picking a spot on the ice and then sitting your a*s down. Who cares if you have company?

Tastytrout I've been doing it since 1970.and back then only locals a handful of locals did it,not everybody knows about it till now.As to ice fishing you must not do it,or you would understand being covered with fishermen and all the noise.I travel 80 miles one way and like to get the best chance at getting fish,in 09 great crappie bite and 3 eyes over 8lbs on vibe-e. This year first ice great then just so so.I'll see you on the wall. Oh by the way the eyes through the ice had the vibe-e in there mouth and on there cheek,so are they ok to keep?

Tuna,

Maybe back in 1970 it wasn't that way.  However, as already mentioned it's 2011 and we use the internet.  Everyone at this point in time knows what goes on at the spillway.  It's even in the newspaper.  You may want to write them a letter so they know to stop giving away all those secrets that only you and a few have.

As far as ice fishing goes it's a 125 mile drive to pymatuning for me and I do it quite frequently.  Being around other fisherman doesn't bother me at all.  I guess it's a personal preference.

I'd agree with Bogey.....fish them right and they'll hit it on the way down and then no questions asked whether or not the fish was snagged.

RE: Almost time for the MADDNESS 2011/03/08 10:23:15 (permalink)
i agree with both.  i have had eyes hit vibes on the way down and i knew it was a hit but when bringing them up they had a good hook in the mouth and the other one in the cheek.  i would consider that a legal hook set.  now if i brought it up and the hook was on the outside of its mouth like under its bottom lip and one in the cheek i would say that is foul hook.  I guess that is one that can be debated till we run out of air.
As far as spot burning i dont believe i am.  the purpose of these boards to to share knowledge, it is no different than when someone catches some fish and goes to the bar and brags about what they caught and tell their friends where they caught them.  As trout said they put it in the post gazette as soon as ppl start cathing fish and tell what they are using down to the color.  At this point in time this thread has 3,061 hits i am sure the paper reaches more than that and that is just one paper.  i will continue to share tips and hints cause its nice when i need some help that there are ppl willing to tell me what to use and where to go so that i can have a better chance at catching some fish.

RE: Almost time for the MADDNESS 2011/03/08 11:11:20 (permalink)
I was actually just making fun of Tuna's famous 70's reference. It seems every post he makes defending shooting fish in the proverbial barrel, he shouts from the rooftops that he's been doing this since the early 70's. I never understood the relevence, and find it funny. However, I can't condemn the practice of this circus, because, with the exception of keeping foul hooked fish, and the keeping of 4 or 5 limits/day...it's legal. Pymy walleye fishing is primarily a put/take fishery. Bings had a very informative post about this last year, with data from the fisheries biologists.

What gets me scratching my head is: How could anyone find this kind of activity fun? Notice I didn't say this kind of fishing...I don't consider this fishing. Claiming sportsmanship because you release foul hooked fish at the spillway is, to me, analagous to claiming to be sportsmanlike by releasing foul-hooked fish while fishing in the nursery waters at trout run. If it's strictly a meat run, and you're driving an hour or two or three to get there, it's much cheaper to go to the supermarket to get your fish with $3.00+/gal gas. So, I can only assume that people take part because they find it enjoyable. Either way, it's none of my business. I just get a kick out of watching Tuna and others justify their pilgrimages every year.

that is a great letter, and it is as simple as bings said.  It is up to the person whether they want to participate in that kind of fishing or not.

That was a great post by Bings.  Thanks for sharing that Bogey.  To me catching the fish is fun because I for some reason don't seem to get them through the ice so often times these are my first walleye of the year.  To me it's very much like hunting.  Most of us can find somewhere close to go and buy venison....but instead we travel to hunt (3 hours in my case), wake up very early in the morning to walk miles into the woods with the hope to come across something that can be killed.

The other thing I see about it is the action at the spillway presents the best opportunity probably all year for shore fisherman to catch their limit in walleye.  Just my thoughts on the issue.  The way I see it there are 2 types of the people.  The people who fish the spillway with the crowd and don't mind it, and the ones who don't like the crowd so they complain about it.  Neither side is wrong but I don't see making spot buring an issue because there may have been a few less guys there in 1970.
