i dont like the maddness myself but i do catch some nice eyes out of there and i don't keep snagged fish i only keep the ones hooked leagaly.  i have had guys ask me if i was going to keep a fish that is hooked in the belly and you should see their jaws drop when i throw the legal eye back.  Sometimes i think they want to hit me for doing it

REMEMBER HOW MUCH FUN YOUR FIRST BIG ONE WAS. TAKE A KID FISHING

i think we should have a fisherie get-together there. we can bring grills, coolers, and lawn chairs and just sit and laugh and have a good time. spectator fishing.

Probably just a bit more righteous than the grown men that fight over snagging walleyes stuck in a cement bathtub.

wolf, due to the economy, i have told my wife that this year i start keeping fish. tough times, indeed. ya know, it is a shame people cannot develop a taste for carp.....as i know a good place.

i do hope that illegally caught fish are returned, though. i could never understand why anyone would fish like that in a place like that when walleye are to be had all over the lake, close to shore, at this time of year. just takes a pair of waders and some warm clothes.

I think its cause these guys dont own boats so there only real chance for walleyes is to fish (snag) them at the spillway.

And wolf, I dont buy the argument of feeding a family with walleyes from the spillway. People drive from all over, spend money on gas, food, lures, line etc to snag some fish when it could be put towards actually buying groceries. Heck some of them prolly take work off to go snag a limit

Do away with the treble hooked lures(cicadas & Vibe Es) during the spawning run and see how many fish those boys can leagally hook "inside" the mouth. Under the chin does not count.

bings, ohio has a lot of waters that are single hook only (jigs) during the spawning runs. it works.

ok I can see everyones point, been fishing there for 50years and if the businesses were not that creedy you would not have had the crappiethon ,which turned it into a potatoe chip factory for years and the musky massacre of the early 80's,wow going off half cocked ,the only way to change the spillway is to close the season lake wide, and that aint going to happen.

No need to necessarily get rid of them bings.  If you fish them correctly then you won't snag the fish.  You are correct that to many people snag fish and keep them.  However, it's not everyone.  Some people are willing to put up with the fight for a chance to legally hook a nice walleye.

The reason people go there is because it's where you stand the best chance at catching a walleye around this time of year.  We all do the same thing every other day of the year when we go out.  We go where we think we stand the best chance of catching something.

Either everyone read your post or listened to the guy who was talking at the sportsmans show here in Pittsburgh because Gander Mountain was all out of every size and type of Chartreuse rap when I went last night.  I still got a few that I think are going to serve me well this weekend.

psu, i am almost certain it is single-hook. every available game warden is dispatched there in the spring, which leaves other areas wide open to snagging. i hear the mahoning river below berlin dam is quite vulnerable to snaggers in the spring because of this.

wolf, i remember back in the mid 70s, during the arab oil embargo, when guys were shoulder to shoulder on the ohio causeway bridge. some would put bar stools against the railing and spend countless hours there. one guy from cleveland had a net with at least a 12 foot handle to net fish. one night as he swung the net across the railing, a car came an spun the net and him around. never did see him again. we would fish on the rocks with raps and jigs and watch the circus above and down from us.

The guys there have came up with a better idea to "net" the fish now.  They tie a long rope to each side of a orange milk crate and put a 10 pound weight in the bottom.  You drop it down and it goes underwater.  Then you pull it up to "net" the fish and pull it up.  Very clever actually.

TT sorry to include the few "fishermen" that actually go there to legaally take some eyes.
Just seems the snaggers out number the good guys by a good margin..

you really cant say the snaggers out number the good guys.maybe at the spillway but the lake is 17,000 acres.there is alot of decent people that come from that area.and they did not have the internet to learn from.they walked and boated that lake, nobody gave up their secretes.
