71GTO:  Missed you Wednesday night.  Caught over 10 trout last night.  Only kept the the ones that swallowed the hook..  Oh yeah, your buddy, the one eyed catfish, he is on the stringer with the four trout that I kept...  Sorry for your loss...

I was fishing Monday night and the water was a little stained but very fishable.  As I was getting off of the water a bat flew straight at my face and I tripped and went headfirst into the water.  While I was scrambling around the bottom of the river with my hands for my pole my waders took on alot of water.  Those things sure do get heavy when they are ful of water. I ruined my MP3 player.   I'm gonna start carrying a broom handle onto the water and have a little batting practice with those little winged rats.  This problems with the bats just got personal and I'm gonna kill a couple of them to send the rest of the bat population a little message.

That is one of the reasons I wear a life jacket when I am in the Yough.  You just don't know when your going to slip and fall.

I checked ebay and those ultrasonics start around $12 and up, I would think that you could get one at the local hardware store.  Not sure how they would work in the outdoors they all seem to be for indoor use.

It was great meeting you and 71gto the other night, look forward to fishing with you again.

The rodent repellers work for so many feet in a circle around them.
Buy one at Walley World or Home Depot, when bats are close turn it on and see if they scatter.
It would be harder to tell if it works if you just went out with it on.
If they don't return it and get your money back.

My sisters attached garage and crawl space had mice and they dissapeard after putting one under the house.

Prices have changed a lot.
I was paying $0.35 to $0.40 for aluminum
Clean copper was $0.65 to $0.80
Cars were $3.00/100LB

Someone once brought in an aluminum smoke house.
It was homemade but very well done and about the size of a small refrigerator.
I hid it in the garage and brought a new hot plate in on monday morning and a couple chickens to smoke.
One of the morons on the night crew thought it was scrap and put it in the bailer.
I left one of the raw chickens in the back seat of his car and cooked the other on a grill.

A few hillbillies would come in every few weeks looking for parts to their still
The bowl from a huge hobart mixer made them a nice boil pot.
They were always wondering around the lot drinking shine and apple juice out of gatoraid bottles.
Deffinently a potent mix-I think I am still a little dizzy.
Smashup derby was a lot of fun and driving a T7 Terex over cars was also almost a thrill-too slow to be real wild!

Marty?Crappy,
Out of curiosity, how much are aluminum cans going for now?  I might have to quit giving my cans to the city.  I've noticed the last few times, someone else is grabbing them before the recylcling people get them.  Might as well get money back from my beer drinking...  Any idea of how much stainless steel is going for?  I'd imagine it would depend on the nickle content.  Any good site to check out?  Do most of the scrap yards around give about the same?
Thanks,
PT

I just took a load of cans to Tube City here in West Mifflin and they were giving $.55 / lb.  I know up at my camp near Wilhelm there is a scrap yard that is currently giving $.70 / lb.  My dad takes his cans up there.  I saw an ad in a Trader's Guide for a scrap yard I think in Kittanning giving $.75 / lb.  All depends on the location.  Seems the ones out in the boonies are giving better prices.

Copper was upwards of $2.50 / lb at Tube City.  Just need to call around and see what the going rate is as the prices fluctuate a lot.

Now the addiction begins.  Your gonna have a blast with that thing.  Missed you at the river today.  Only caught two, missed a couple more.  Ross was down with his girlfriend.  Chicks in Waders sure are cute.  I should be down tomorrow.  My kids birthday is one of these days and I have to help my kid with his Eagle project soon too.  It's great that I can fit my work and family into my fishing schedule.  That tent sale Gander Mountain has is usually pretty good.  You see any breathable waders in that tent?

Smallhook and Kyler,

Smallhook, I decided after my customer meeting yesterday to head down to the river in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day there and know I would see you, but alas, the sun got the better of me, wore me out the heat so I had to leave, and Ross and his girlfriend had just pulled in as Ken and I was leaving. Oh my Superworms came in today, I was a little disappointed that all 1,000 of them were not big already, so I am feeding them to see how long it takes them to grow to 2 inches, I got them sitting on my desk next to me so I can keep an eye on them....lol.

Kyler, you are going to have to lets us know when you are coming to Smithton so you can meet all of us. We might be able to hold a convention down there, as there is plenty of room. Where in Smithton did you fish? It is kind of weird trying to figure them trout out down there at Smithton, it is a good thing the brewery is closed as I use to think them trout was drinking Stoney's and getting confused. I caught a couple of nice bows on Sunday afternoon around 2 before the storm rolled in and Ken caught one yesterday around the same time and Smallhook was crushing them in the evening, so go figure.

Hi guys! Its been a few weeks since I've had the time to get on here (Been busy writing a proposal for a grant). At any rate I couldnt believe this thread was still active. Awesome! Very interesting talk since I was last on.
Kyler in regards to:

dr. fotios trust me when I say this..... when u get responces...(that arent me stating things ive learned from WVU, potomac state, frostburg.... they lke to do what is call screwing with u.... until sept. dont take what everyone says so seriously .... we are all trying to waste time till chrome comes into play!

I'm glad you said that/ take it that way. While I was serious about the potential risk, I was screwin with you as well by being a smartass. I dont think I've fished for what your refering to in sept.? but I'm glad we are at least on the same page overall.

oh also I used to get fake tans from tanning beds.... until I heard that it causes cancer... but my grandfather who golfed and fished alot but never one time in his life tanned in a tanning bed developed skin cancer and died.... but for some reason his daughters still used tanning bed.... see things happen for a reason... like the kid in Connecticut died from a bat bite... just his luck... like mine with me developing kidney stones... bats are bad as people from russia who snag steelhead!!!

I totally agree with you here as well. Its crazy but sometimes no matter how careful you are **** happens. people are free to make their own decisions. I just think people should be informed as much as possible cause it's unfortunate when someone doesnt know of potential dangers and dies as a result. I hate it when people do dangerous things full aware of the dangers only to try and blame someone else by suing etc. when death or injury results.

Marty its funny you mention Artemisia absinthum. I mentioned before that a large amount of work I've done has been in regards to herbal malaria treatments. Well that work was all based on the active ingredient artemisinin that comes from a plant Artemisia annua better known as sweet wormwood, long been used in chinese herbal medicine. Actually grows in this country in a few places, maybe more. I know its common in the potomac area of MD/DC. Medicinal plants are a major interest of mine this includes the chemistry, biological effects and even as a hobby horticulture. I am always looking for and collecting medicinal plants. I was unaware that A. absinthum could be obtained in an herbal pill form? Somewhat suprising. Thujone one of the psychoactive components is a neurotoxin so because of that I would be hesitant or at least very cautious about using it. It would be important to know the dose if possible before I would consider taking it and it would also depend on why I was going to take it. That having been said the poison is in the dose. Everything is a poison if you take enough of it so toxicity in and of itself is not something to fear rather its something to take into consideration. pretty cool you seem to know a bit about herbal meds. pm me if you are interested in any sources or info. or seeds.
Crappy how are the worms coming along? Hope they're all dead and gone.
In regards to the bats the explosive ideas are funny. Its always fun to try and find new uses for such. I think bird shot would be more effective though. I would have to say Kyler and Marty are correct about how to keep them away. I found several weeks ago at one of the holes I fish the bats were coming out right around dusk pretty heavy. Had one hit my line about 10ft in front of me. No suprise as the bugs were intense. So the next night I built a small fire about an hour before dusk. Kept the bugs down and while I did see a few bats they stayed clear of me because of the smoke, I 'd say they stayed about 30yds away on all sides till I left at 10:30. I'm going to have to try one of those tiki torches I have a bunch layin around and thats a lot easier than building a fire. I dont see why the ultrasonic devices wouldnt work you would just need a large enough decibel output. I'm sure some of the small ones dont peak at enough decibels to be useful outdoors but they should be easily modified to do such. I'm going to pick a cheap one up and if I have time I'll try and modify the circuit to increase the output. If/when I get around to it I'll let you guys know how it works.

doc,

the pills didn't do much for me. Started using med. Selsun blue a few days ago. Seems to be helping better.

The bat entered through the pipe flue in the chimney. Forgot to cover it up after moving the wood burnner. Gonna slate over the bricks & slate a wall & platform for the stove. I thought the bat was kinda cute

Crappy,
glad to hear at least somethings working. What type of worms? Just curious.

Marty,
I personally dont know too much about leeks. In terms of medicinal properties there are what they have been used for like say by the indians. And then theres what research has found them to be active as. Two different things but I will say that unlike some I do put some weight on what plants have been used for. Especially if they have been used for hundreds or even thousands of years. Just because science hasn't looked at it or doesn't understand it certainly doesn't mean a plant has no activity. now obviously there are some examples of placebo effect but often if native/indigenous people have been using something for a very long time there is probably a reason. Native americans have had a history of leek use for such things as colds earaches and worms. I think garlic is a pretty common remedy for colds. Wether it works or not I dont know. I personally have my own secret (dont know that its really secret) remedy for colds. That would be ground rhizomes (fresh is better but dried work also) of Zingiber officinale made into a very strong tea. Works unbelievably well. Back to the leeks though In regards to some of the potentially active chemicals the chemicals responsible for their odor and taste are primarily sulfur containing organic molecules. Some of these have been looked at for the antithrombotic (anti clotting) effects as well as anti-fungal and antibacterial. Anything in particular you were looking for? Let me know I could probably get you more info. or some articles.

Every spring in Bradford PA there is a leek festival and VFD's have leek dinners.

Medicinal qualities are rumored to cure almost anything except baldness.
E.D. yes-wild viagra?
Eat to repel mosquitos-probably helps same as garlic
Sooth an upset stomach-goes either way
CURE FOR CONSTIPATION-YES

I think colan cleanser is a good posibility.

Eating them can be adicting-it might be a endorphin rush from the hot ones!

Yeah Marty I can relate. I've never had a leek before but I'm obsessed with garlic. Can't eat enough of it and I dont even care about the smell that comes out of my pores, does work well against the skeeters. Did you happen to see that story a couple of months back about all the poachers they were arresting in canada for poaching and running wild garlic? Dont think its the same as leeks but I could be wrong. I emailed the story to a buddy of mine, also a garlic fan, I'll have to see if I still have it. It was funny up in this one part of canada its practicaly like running drugs.

Did not see that story.
All around Bradford hillsides with damp loose soil become covered with leeks-except East Bradford or Oak Hill area where I grew up.
Wild leeks are a much stronger version of the ones in the produce section.
Taste could be described as a mix of green onion, chive, radish and garlic.

Canadian authorities aim to sniff out wild-garlic poachers
By Ingrid Peritz
Toronto Globe and Mail
PAPINEAUVILLE, Quebec — The thieves set out furtively in the predawn darkness. They often work in gangs, armed with cell phones, getaway cars and their weapons of choice — shovels. Officers say one thing gives them away, however:
They reek of garlic. Each spring, the pungent larcenists stalk Quebec's awakening forests. They're wild-garlic poachers, ready to break the law in pursuit of their tasty but forbidden loot. "It's a constant battle,'' says Guy Venne, a senior officer with the provincial wildlife protection service in Western Quebec. Wild garlic was declared a vulnerable species in Quebec in 1995 after over-picking threatened to turn it into the cod of the plant world. The province banned commercial sales and passed a law forbidding harvesting for more than personal consumption. That has created a lively black market for a plant that has long been a staple of Quebec kitchens. And it has prompted increasingly desperate tactics by poachers eager to satisfy the appetite for wild-garlic risottos and vinaigrettes. One day last week, wildlife officers in camouflage staked out a wild-garlic poacher for nearly an hour. The thief emerged from the forest, looked both ways and hopped into his car. "I put on my siren and pulled up in front of him to block his car,'' wildlife officer Eric Theriault said. He and partner Stephane Drouin seized a grocery bag full of garlic that weighed as much as a large bowling ball. Inside were 2,300 illegal bulbs. "He said he needed the garlic for his high blood pressure,'' said Theriault. "We hear it all.'' Wild garlic, also known as wild leeks or ramps, is among the first shoots of spring, so it's easy to spot with its vivid green leaves shaped like rabbit ears. The plant grows in Quebec maple forests, mostly on private land. Foragers in Quebec may legally pick no more than 50 bulbs a person, but officers say it's not uncommon to stop poachers hauling hockey bags stuffed with thousands. Wildlife officers in the Outaouais, the hot spot for garlic poaching along with the Quebec Eastern Townships, confiscated 90,000 bulbs and charged 75 people for poaching-related offenses last year. The year before, 50 people — found with 32,100 bulbs — were charged. A single picker last year was fined about $9,300 for being in possession of a mindboggling 7,829 bulbs. What drives the underground racket? In the Outaouais, it's the neighborhood. Officers say the region near Ottawa is a prime location for poaching because wild garlic can be taken across the boundary with Ontario, where it can be harvested and sold legally. Some of it winds up in Ottawa's popular Byward Market, Quebec officers say. Last week, wild garlic — origin unknown — was selling at the market for about 70 cents for four or five stalks. But Venne said that a full wild garlic stalk with the bulb and leaves can fetch 93 cents. So the lure of quick profit spurs the poachers, the vast majority of whom are never caught. They unload the contraband through underground networks, and it eventually finds its way to friends or flea markets, or ends up pickled in Quebec bars. It sounds like the kind of covert activity normally associated with the cocaine or opium trade. In some ways, the comparison isn't that far off. The humble Allium tricoccum has had its addicts for centuries. Wild garlic is only available for about three weeks a year, a surefire way of adding to its cachet among foodies and top chefs. In Quebec, it's even rarer. Normand Laprise of Toque, one of Montreal's top restaurants, receives enough wild garlic to offer it at his posh establishment for only two or three nights a year. He gets it from a legal supplier who sells him no more than the 50-bulb limit. Laprise feels more than a pinch of envy toward his fellow chefs in Ontario, who can avail themselves legally and abundantly of the treasured prize. "It's rue,'' Laprise said. "I find them very lucky.''
