RE: Bats on the Yough 2007/07/17 23:02:51 (permalink)
Prices have changed a lot.
I was paying $0.35 to $0.40 for aluminum
Clean copper was $0.65 to $0.80
Cars were $3.00/100LB

Someone once brought in an aluminum smoke house.
It was homemade but very well done and about the size of a small refrigerator.
I hid it in the garage and brought a new hot plate in on monday morning and a couple chickens to smoke.
One of the morons on the night crew thought it was scrap and put it in the bailer.
I left one of the raw chickens in the back seat of his car and cooked the other on a grill.

A few hillbillies would come in every few weeks looking for parts to their still
The bowl from a huge hobart mixer made them a nice boil pot.
They were always wondering around the lot drinking shine and apple juice out of gatoraid bottles.
Deffinently a potent mix-I think I am still a little dizzy.
Smashup derby was a lot of fun and driving a T7 Terex over cars was also almost a thrill-too slow to be real wild!

Was fishing the Yough with 71GTO tonight and the darn bats chased us off the water.  Must have been 20 or 30 of those little winged rats just dive bombing us.  Caught a heck of a bunch of fish though.  Caught Smallmouth, white bass, sauger and a couple of nice trout.  Good night on the water, nice fishing with you 71GTO.

SmallHook,

It was a blast, but you forgot to tell Mossy Oak that you caught all those fish on your fly rod.....and didn't even use crickets....hehehe. Now enjoy those trout for a midnight snack. Maybe see you down there tomorrow night, does anyone know if loud noise will scare the bats away? If it weren't for the bats, we would still be there!

There are battery operated rodent repelants that might work.
I know they work for mice and they also say for bats.

High frequency sound High frequency sound in the range of 4,000 to 18,000 cycles per second (cps) has been used successfully to repel bats from gymnasiums, large warehouses, and similar structures. Adjustable high frequency dog training whistles connected to cylinders of compressed air or large aquarium pumps and placed close to the bats’ roost have a repelling effect. High frequency sound is believed to interfere with the bat’s ability to navigate. These whistles might also make people in the area irritable and nervous.

I'm going to try firecrackers.  I thing firecrackers thrown into the air will chase them off.  I'll let you know how they work.

I got to try out my new musky net in the house last night on a brown bat. Had to catch it 4 times though. The holes on it were a little too big & it would escape before I could put a waste basket over it. Felt like John Candy in the movie The Great Outdoors.

Darn right.  I was gonna carry my easy-to-carry shotguun with me and waste a few of the winged rats but my son told me bats are protected in this state.  I figured if they saw their kin droppin to the water in pieces they might get the idea and back off.  It would  have an additional benefit of chumming the water with bloody goodies which should bring the cats in to investigate.  I hope the fire crackers don't shut the fish off though.  Tonight we will see.

Hey 71GTO, saw you at Eureka around 2:20 today on my way back from Layton. You had a fish on.  I couldn't stop, wife had plans for me today.  Had to fix the weed whacker, cut some scrub and shovel a few stones.  Now that thats done I'm heading down for a Sunday night of fishing.  Only one small bass at Layton under the bridge this morning.  I should have saved the gas and stopped where you was.  I'm grabbing firecrackers for tonights batfest.  I'll let you know how they work.

I was hoping to tell you guys that the bats was grabbing up the little explosives I was throwin into the air and blowing off their little legs or heads, but, they seemed unphased by the firecrackers. It actually seemed to make them angry and brought even more of the little demons over to harass me.  So firecrackers don't work, OK, let me rethink this.  Maybe a little flamethrower?

Marty?Crappy,
Out of curiosity, how much are aluminum cans going for now?  I might have to quit giving my cans to the city.  I've noticed the last few times, someone else is grabbing them before the recylcling people get them.  Might as well get money back from my beer drinking...  Any idea of how much stainless steel is going for?  I'd imagine it would depend on the nickle content.  Any good site to check out?  Do most of the scrap yards around give about the same?
Thanks,
PT

I have not worked there since 01.
Call around price paid will varry a lot.

Pittsburgh scrap metal dealors
http://anywho.yellowpages.com/sp/co/anywho/aw_ypresults.jsp?t=0&v=3&s=2&q=scrap+metal&ci=Pittsburgh&st=PA&_requestid=62066

We sorted stainless by magnetic or not-magnetic.
Don't remember which was worth more or the price.

Greensheet or Pennysaver might have some ads from scrap dealors
I put the prices in the Finleyville Pennysaver every week when I was there.
