Tried out the Smokey's doe in heat lure tonight. Breeze was right and had a spike come walking in right up to the wick. Saw a doe behind me come into a Lil' can call later then a fox came in later than that. Also saw the doe chase an all black squirrel up a into tree, never saw that before. Lot of activity though.

How old is he? In older people the circulation is not so good so it might be worth the invstment. OR maybe buy better boots like some for the Iditarod in Cabelas catalog.

My christmas present this years is the cabelas wooltimate outfitters series. I was gonna go all wool but when you do that it can only be dry cleaned. This stuff is a blend of wool/fleece which can be washed like regular clothes. It also has a windstopper lining in it.

Merino wool is a different type of wool, the best of the best. Its made from the shorter hairs in wool vs cheaper wool which is made out of the top layers. Merino wool is soft and not itchy.

scentused: special golden estrus
Temp: 53 Dwpt:30 Baro: 30.30 rising Moon: waxing cresent Wind: SW 5mph
Humidity: 55%   Cloudy

Ran a scent trail to the stand on the way in, and hung a couple scent wicks. I hunted till 10:30 no deer seen.

scentused: Jamesvalley scrape scent
Temp:40  Dwpt: 39  Baro: 30.36 rising  Moon: waxing crescent  Wind: ESE 5mph
Humidity: 82%  Sunny

Put the james valley in a couple scrape's by the stand then climb up. About 6:35 I hear a deer coming up the creekbottom about 70yrds. away. So I grunt to it and wait nothing. I grunt again and the next thing I hear is alot of brush breaking. Sounds like a buck beating an alder bush but I never saw him. He works on up the creek bottom, 30 to 40 min. later I the sound of a deer coming down the ridge to my right. About 50 yrds. I can tell it's a buck but alittle one. ( 5pt. ) He's got his nose to the ground, he steps in and opening at 17 yrds. and stops smelling the air. I think he could smell the james valley in the scrape. Instead of coming right to it he circled around all the scrape's  and heads back the way he came nose to the ground. He works out of sight and about 15min later returns again and passes at 15yrds. behind me then turns heading away. Just then somthing made me look up the ridge to see a shooter buck about 60 yrds. away. I tried grunting nothing, next I tried the can nothing, I think he may of had a doe with him. He worked out of sight and an hour later I spot a deer coming from behind, I get up just in case he's a shooter. Turn out to be a spike, he passed bye at 20 yrds. I sit till 11:00 with out seeing another deer.

Nov-4-08 morninghunt 1A
Temp:43 Dwpt: 42  Baro: 30.31 rising  Moon: waxing cresent  Wind: ENE 7mph
Humidity: 95%  Partlycloudy
Scent used: Droptyne doe to the door

Ran a scent trail to the scrape by my stand and poured alittle more in the scrape. At 7:10 I hear a buck grunt, but couldn't tell from where. But he had to be with in 80 yrds. Finally I spot him heading to the trail I made coming in he hit it, and stops smelling the ground. Then walks over and starts beating up a sapling for about 5min. He looks like a 6pt. and since he showed no intrest in the scent trail I decided to grunt to him. He looks my way and starts heading right to me, passes at 10 yrds. Then works 60 yrds. below me, so I decieded to toy with him. I grunt some more and bleat with the can. He instantly turnes comes back to 15 yrds. looking for the other deer. Stands there for about 5 min. then turns to go away. He only goes about 10yrds. and starts tearing up another sapling. He works it over for a good 10 min. then heads down the hollow out of sight. I sit till 11 am no other deer seen.

Nov-5-08  Morninghunt 2D
Temp: 39  Dwpt. 39   Baro: 30.22 rising  Moon: waxing crescent Wind: ENE 5mph
Humidity: 93 %   Foggy/ Sunny
Scent used: Drop tyne doe to door

Layed a scent trail to the stand and passed a scrape below stand. It was a pretty dead morning then at 8am I spot a buck about 80 yrds. out heading up the ridge. So I grunt to him and he stops,I hit the call again and he starts heading in. He goes straight to the scrape and starts raking his horns on the licking branches. He's about 20yrds. broadside but he a small 7 pt. so I decieded to pass on him. Then he sticks his nose in the scrape and smells the scent I put down. He starts to follow the trail I made earlier, passed at 7 yrds. and works out of sight still right on the trail I made. I stay in the stand till 1:30 pm with no other deer sighted.

Nov-6-08 Morninghunt 1A
Temp: 43 Dwpt: 39  Baro:30.08 steady  Moon: 1st Quarter  Wind: NNE4mph

Scentused:  Drop tyne doe to the door

I do the same routine as before and get settled in, I stay in stand till 11am with no deer sightings.

Nov-6-08 Eveninghunt 1A
Temp:70  Dwpt:47  Baro:29.98 falling Moon: 1st quarter Wind: NE 7mph
Humidity: 91%    Sunny and warm
Scent used: James valley scrape scent

I decieded to hunt the same stand I was in this morning. So I just put so of the james valley in the scape and get settled in. Nothing till alittle before 5pm. when I spot the small 6pt. from the other day heading for the scrape. He smells it and paws it alittle then turns and passes by at 15 yrds. heading up the hollow. About 10 min. pass and all of a sudden there is big rukus going on where I last saw the 6pt. heading. Then I can see and hear deer running. Then it calms down, I figure the 6pt. found a doe. So I dig out the can call and bleat a couple of times. About 10 min. later I hear some deer heading my way,I finally spot them it's a doe with a button buck 30yrds off to her side. They get about 20 yrds. away when I hear a grunt from behind them. Looking back I spot the 6pt. coming, he trails the doe by the stand at 10yrds. They work out of sight, but the button buck stay's at my stand. He walks off a little then comes back. He does this till dark then I finally get to sneak down and out.

Got in late around 3:15pm to my spot, left the treestand at home. Saw 37 turkey feed past me in my position from a blowdown at 4:30. The Smokey's seems to be working. Had a deer run straight up to me from down the hill(downwind) at dark like a madman, it stopped 60-80 yards from me. Must have smelled me on the ground. Snorted and ran.

Hunted all day yesterday.  Didn't see even one deer.  I've seen deer in this area in the past, but not this time.  They must have been rutting somewhere else.  Long day.  Trying Greene county today.

Sat in the stand for 8 1/2 hours today.  At daybreak, a line of four does walked by at about 80 yards and about 1 o'clock, a spike played peeka boo with me form the brush about 30 yards behind my tree.  Around 2:30, I decided to go to another stand and when I got there, a BIG deer jumped up about 20 yards away.  I never saw the front end, and didn't get a real long look at the back end either, because that deer had important business somewhere far away and he realized he was late.

I actually saw more deer on the 1.5 hour drive down in the morning.  They must have been moving pretty good last night, tho again spent most of the day in the woods and I didn't see anything I'd call rutting activity.

Made it to my stand last night at 3:00 and jumped 4 doe bedded right under it.  About an hour later they came back and started feeding on the hill behind me about 80 yds away, but no bucks following.  10 min before last light the woods came to life, I heard deer in front, behind and to my left being chased. Grunting everywhere, tending grunts and growls it sounded like rush hour in the woods, but all I could see were silhouettes. I ended up staying on stand until 6:30 because of all the activity around me but it was worth the wait just to hear the action. Going to move my stand a short distance tonight and hopefully catch them moving before dark. Hopefully the hot does are still in the area.

Went out again last night in the same tree and had action right from the start. Let out a grunt sequence and saw a nice 8 trying to mount a hot doe. They worked their way to 15 yds with the buck grunting almost every step. I started to pull back and heard movement behind me, a huge 4 yr old 6 pt with about 18" spread great mass and huge brows, ears laid back and ready to fight. The 8 didnt even put up a fight and lost his doe. Two other smaller bucks showed up and pushed the 6 pt and doe down the valley.  Just before dark saw 3 doe coming up the valley, grabbed my binos and saw a massive buck nose to the ground trailing a fourth doe and letting out a series of growls. All in all I saw 6 buck and 5 doe, maybe I'm being too picky but i'm holding out for Mr. Big. I was using Bob K's SilverTop and Curiosity but dont think it mattered.

Thurs - Got in my hangon in the thick stuff. Poured rain, lucky i got there while it wasnt raining, still water ran down the tree and down my back making me miserable. At 9:15 the rain stopped for 15 mins. Not two minutes later a 6pt stepped out. I grunted, he stopped then kept goin. I moo'd at him with the doe call, he stopped, then kept going. Figuring I had nothing to lose I snort wheezed at him. He started coming up, caught a jagger in the face and that ended that, turned around and walked down hill. I wasnt gonna shoot him anyhow. Although the rack was wide it wasnt very tall and had virtually no mass. Turns out that buck was shot today by a friend home from the miltary out of a stand close by. Better him then me.

Fri - alarm goes off at 4:30, i shut it off, back to sleep. Wake up 5am, figured what the heck ill go to an old stand I used to see lots of deer from. In stand by 5:45. Used a drag of the new RealScent. 1:30 a flock of 10+ turkeys showed up 100 yrds out. I called them within 60 with my mouth, then they saw something and left. Didnt see anything else but squirrels, left 5:45, miserable and ****ed. 12 hours in one stand with very little movement and nada.

Shot the last of the buckk bomb off today...Got soaked in the morning hunt saw no deer..Went out for the last 3 hours. Laid a scenttrail with the scent bomb..After about a 200 yrds I hear a dog down in the swamp..Of all days the neighbor is running his beagle in the swamp the last 3 hours of archery...Par for the course this year..Spent 50 bucks on doe pee and only had 1 buck all season even cross a scent trail..So my input for the experiment will be about useless....Jlh if you happen to figure out if we're just **** poor hunters or in the wrong place let me know would you...lol...Always next year...

RE: Who wants to help with an experiment? 2008/11/15 23:37:38 (permalink)
I went to hang up the scent bombs today and I noticed that the tinks 69 didn't smell the same as it did earlier in the year.  I opened the actual bottle, and it didn't smell the same either.  Like it got sour or something.  If my insensitive nose can pick that up, I imagine deer can tell too.  So, my results for the entire experiment are that using tinks 69 has made no difference at all in my deer sightings.  I cannot conclusively say that my use of scents had any effect on deer behavior whatsoever.  The only deer I saw all season that were even in sight of the scent bombs were does, and they exibited no noticible reaction.  More often than not, when I put them out, I saw no deer at all, which forces me to consider the possibility that I was actually repelling the deer...Of course, I have no proof of that either.  This years experience pretty much goes along with my experiences with scents for my entire hunting career.  While I am compelled to use them (at least during the rut), they never seem to help my chances.  Nonetheless, peer pressure an slick advertising will probably have me using some brand of scent again next year.

RE: Who wants to help with an experiment? 2008/11/16 14:16:41 (permalink)
My conclusion is this. The right scents must be used at the right times. More often then not a doe estrous scent has no role in the early season. Sometimes you can fool one, most times you cant. I think certain scent products work better then others, like team fitzgerald deer dander or VS1 herd in a stick. I believe in an area with the right numbers of deer mock scrapes are your best bet. You cant leave scent wicks hanging for days because deer come in at night and eventually the gig is up. Thats why a mock scrape is better, it says a deer was here but you were late. I probably will not use estrous outside the rut again unless its just to give it a whirl. Definately not every day. I believe my lack of success with the scent has more to do with the fact I play the wind. Honestly, how can it work if you really pay attention to the wind. If the wind is in your favor its not moving the scent where the deer are which is why I believe it can work only one of two ways outside of the wind being wrong. Scrapes and drag lines, putting scent out in bombs where the deer are never gonna smell it obviously cannot work.
