Well just got back from disney world late last night.I see i didn't miss much last week bythat i mean no kills.Want to check cams today still got a giant 11 hanging around but he was there only one time in a week.Maybe the full moon had things screwed up or something. We walked a long way today trying to find scrapes or a rub line no luck. The best we did find was a small rub line starting three in a row.

Congrats, sugarfuzz.  I, for one, intend to continue to use scents until I get a buck or until archery season ends.  Anything interesting, I'll put it up.

Sorry for the late report.  Hunted last Thursday evening and made a scrape about 20 yards from my ladder stand and put Kirschner's Roam in it.  Didn't take any special precautions and just scratched the leaves away with my boot.  At 5:30pm, a little 1.5 yr old 5 pt makes his way towards the scrape and is definitely interested.  He buried his nose in the dirt and sniffed the scrape for a solid minute or minute and a half.  He actually had fresh dirt on his nose.  He also sniffed the low vegetation nearby that I brushed up against when walking in.  He hung around for a solid 20 mins. browising on just about everything and spent a least 8 mins within 3 yards of the base of my tree, looking up towards me several times and never busting me.  He never acted "excited" over the scrape and scent but was definitely curious until he got hungry.  Hunted that same stand Friday AM for a couple hrs and never saw a deer.  Was away this weekend and didn't get to hunt my areas.

I hunted 10-20-08 evening in wmu 1a
temp: 60  dewpt. 29 hunidity: 31%  baro: 30.13 falling wind: sw 5mph
moon: waning gibbous  sunny
scents used: james valley scrape scent & wildlifereaserch special golden estrus
I got in the stand at 2:30, put the james valley in a scrape and hung 2 scent wicks with the golden estrus one at ground level and one from the stand. The last 30mins. of light had a doe and fawn come bye at 50 yrds. The doe seemed to have smelled estrus scent and became nervous. She was constantly scanning the area more than normal.

I decided to go out this morning, near my house.  I work all night and , as a result, it was already getting light when I got into my ladder stand, about 500 yards from my house.  After about 45 minutes, my cell phone buzzes.  It's my wife, calling to tell me that there is an 8 point, a 4 point and 3 doe milling around in my yard.  So, I would have had a better shot from my back porch.

Switched over to Dominant buck pee. Had a little 6 point come in and when he smelled my scent line he turned right around and started to walk off..He didn't seem to like it at all..Probably been pushed around by the bigger bucks...

Put out some golden estrus this morning.  8:30 a 3pt came in and made a small rub.  Stayed up wind of the scent so he didnt know it was there.  Scapes and rubs are showing up good for me now.  Though the camera shows them doing this at 4 in the morning.

Checked a stand and the trail cam this morning.  Didnt hut but brought my bow andstuff.  Left one of the stands and there was a nice 7pt in the middle of a golden rod field (10:35am).  My buddy got his can call and grunt and started callin.  The buck came straight at us from about 150yrds out.  Came to about 30 yrds and the wind shifted and off he went.  Would have been awesome to have some scent out and watched how that buck would have acted.  There startin to get crazy fellas good luck.

I decide not use any scent this am. Got in stand, alittle after 7:30 had a doe and 2 fawns come in. About 70yrds. back a buck is following. He stops at 22yrds. right before my only shooting lane he is going to past. Desision time I can see 9to 10" g2's I think he was an 8pt. but not sure how wide. Meanwhile moma doe is 12 yrds. to my right looking right at me. Decide I'm not going too push the issue. She moves off finally and he's still standing there watching her. He starts thur the opening  and kind of turns away and I see he is around 16" wide and more massive than I thought and an 8 pt. They work their way out of sight. I stayed till 10:30 am nothing else.

on thing, they came from down wind. i smoked my clothes the other week and they still stink to high hell like camp fire. deer never knew i was there.

Does hanging out by a fire help with your scent?  It doesn't alarm deer?

Not that I have any experience, but I have seen posts on another website about the smoking of clothes. Some swear by them if they hunt in or near human population( i.e. housing plans or near singular homes). The guys that say it doesn't work well are the ones who hunt big woods, state game lands, or large farms.

Again, I don't have any experience and won't try it, just my beliefs. Never saw a deer come to a fire or remnants of it to check it out, don't expect I will see it either.

Its a smell theyre used too. Didnt alarm the deer down wind of me. Ill tell ya, your smell is nothing compared to that. One word of advice, DONT smoke your face mask. I made that mistake. Thank god i had some acorn cover scent and toned it down a little. It almost choked me the first time i put it on.

I heard a story of someone hunting with the owner of Mathews in which they said he will not go into the woods without doing it.

Im gonna do mine again this weekend.

Ill have the portable one for next year, building a full fire to smoke clothes is a little time consuming.

They wont come to check it out, but if they ran everytime they smelled wood burning... well.. theyd run to death. Think about all the camps/houses that have some form of wood burner. Whats more alarming, natural smell or us after we sweat to death carrying all the gear. I only  wear a tshirt into the woods, a fleece on super cold days and i still sweat.

10-27-08  morninghunt 1A
scent used: Wildlife reasearch special golden estrus
temp:31  dwpt: 25  Baro: 30.05 rising moon: waning cresent
wind: sw 16mph  partlycloudy to fair

Hung my scent wicks and got in the stand. About 8:30 had a doe and 2 little ones with her. They worked up the hollow, no more action after that.

10-27-08 eveninghunt 2D
Scent used: Special golden estrus
Temp: 37  Dwpt: 32  Baro:30.04 steady  Moon: waning cresent
Wind: wsw 7mph   overcast

Layed a scent trail on the way in and hung up 2 scent wicks. Just saw a few treerats.

10-29-08 morninghunt 1A
Scent used: Special golden estrus
Temp:26  Dwpt: 30  Baro:29.85 steady Moon: newmoon
Wind: wsw 13 mph cloudy/snow & rain

Got to my stand and put some scent in the scrape and ran a trail past the stand. Around 8:00 I spot a buck heading for the scrape. He paws it alittle then beats up a sapling, then follows the trail I put down. He passes at 15 yrds. offering a broadside shot I pass him up. He was a small 8pt. about 13" spread.

10-29-08 eveninghunt 1A
Temp: 30  Dwpt:30  Baro: 29.96 rising Moon:  new moon
Wind: west 14mph  overcast / spittingsnow
Scent used: Special golden estrus

Decided to hunt the same stand I hunted in the morning. Did the same routine I used in the morning. Got in the stand at 2pm. Hunted till dark no action.

10-30-08 morninghunt 1A
Temp: 23 Dwpt: 25 Baro: 30.36 rising  Moon: new moon
Wind: wsw 5mph  Fair / sunny
Scent used: Special golden estrus

Got to the stand and put some scent in scrape and ran another trail past my stand. Got settled in and around 8:00 had a doe with 3 little ones pass bye. About 30min. later I spot a deer 40rds. below the scrape. I give a couple grunts and it comes running to the scrape and smells the scent trail and comes right in. But he's just a button buck, he follows the trail right to the scent wick. Then he's got this confused look on his face, it was priceless. He does a couple lip curls then starts chewing the wick for about a minute. Then he works on up the ridge. No more action after that, I got down at 11:00.
