DSR this weekend? Doesn't it open next week?
With 5 days of flow at this time of year there are definately some kings motoring though the staircase -ball park section in enough numbers to be fishable.

Hey guys,

I read an article in Lake O Outdoors I believe from last year and they spoke of some crazy numbers of natural reproduced Kings from the Salmon R. (since they have regulated flow during salmon run/spawning) that were netted in the spring making their way back to the lake.  I would think these fish are imprinted to the hilt.  I would assume BIGGER returns with a few "au naturales" in the mix.

I think there are fewer this year due to the heavy west wind regime early in the year that piled up all the warm water at the east end of the lake.  Kings don't like warm water.  That is why you have seen the very good fishing all year on the western end.  Be patient, mother nature is calling.  They will come...

Any smolt netted would not come back until 2011- right?
I think they spend 4 years in the big water before returning to spawn.

Sort of...

Kings spawn in the fall and young are born a few weeks later.  So technically they are born in the fall.  Most Kings spawn just and croak just before their 4th B-days.  Some of the MONSTER rogue males that are caught each year are freaks that actually stay in the lake an extra year and are approaching 5.

It's tuff being only 45 min away. The bright side is I got rooms for the 21st and 22nd so hopefully the water and fish are there! I'am heading up after labor day if I stay unemployed. ( Wondering if i should keep my fingers crossed)

Salty while there will be way more fish there will be way more people also. There will be kings moving on every pulse of water at this point. May only be a dozen to  twenty moving through on any given day but they WILL be moving in the Black hole - ball park strech. They will likely not be a spooked as fish coming through later and more bite friendly.

RE: ITCHING FOR KINGS 2008/08/15 13:00:10 (permalink)
I have caught them as early as July 23 and it was back in the days of no summer flows(no way it was 185cfs maybe 150 at most). Now admititly that fish had a HUGE lamprey attached which may have affected her urge to spawn (feeling like she was dying and wanting to dump her eggs first), but she was in the upperclay when it was on the south side of the island (there was no river where it runs now). PERSUING A FISH AT THAT TIME WOULD BE LIKE LOOKING FOR , (I was fishing bass)BUT THE POSSILILITY IS ALWAYS THERE. That would be being optimistic.
I have caught many at this time of year after rains or when they pushed water for the yakkers. They are there now even if scattered and any day you are fishing with more than 350cfs stands you the chance of having a small pod trickle by you.
Wish I had the money and time to fish there as much as I used to.

That's cool! I heard there wasn't going to be a run at all this year. If you want salmon 18 mile is the only place worth fishing.

Starting to get fired up here.
I went to the local shop & purchased some glo bug hooks today.
I started to get ready to tie some bugs up last night, but couldn't find any.
I'm sure I have a pack somewhere, but they are hiding.

A bunch of Comets need to be made up also.

I am going to stick to Comets & Glo bugs pretty much. Those have been the bread winners for me. Of coarse I'll be tying a variety of colors.

I also need to make some flies for metalslayer.

9/22-9/29 I'm off for a week. I plan on my first trip being in that time frame.
Am hopeful I'll finally get a Coho. They have eluded me up till now.

Wader, yeah your right about the stats. Less stocking, better return. Heard the theory that less fish stocked=less competition for food=larger fish. Dont really know if it holds water. one thing for sure, the guys that are getting fish, seem to say they are running larger than past few years.

The DEC used to say the Salmon returned every four years. At the hatchery now, the sign says they are returning every three years.

a 4 year class is a stretch, most are 2 > 3 .   come on , lets look at reality, those #'s days and 30 + pound kings are gone.....
catch & kill on the lake (as it always was), fish the mouth all night, not saying the year class is higher before entering the river but the return sure is ...... cut in stocking, increased in harvest , more competition for lower forage (increased reproduction as reported)
Gimmie an F, Gimmie an I, Gimmie an S, Gimmie an H, whats that spell ? whats that spell ? whats that smell ????????

Will do. Gottum got one last year when we were fishing. The year before my dad got a small one. That's the only two I've seen except the ones that blow up the riva straight to the hatchery.

That time is usually good for them I see from reports. I think the problem being I usually go up too late to see them in numbers.

Number 6 salmon hook, black chenille body, black tail,

1-1/2" deep purple soft hackle over 2" dark red hackle,

full down and across cast, long swing = coho madness.

very tight lines,

I saw three large kings in the hatchery today. I saw a few more surface in the church hole in the lower flyfishing area also. The ones in the hatchery are down by front of ladder. If you live up there or are up there check it out. I knew some fish would come up in this water.

Not sure who mentioned it, but you are correct:  Small numbers are in at Burt.  We got into them yesterday, somewhat.  Coho and King.
