I want to skate flies & catch an Atlantic, but rolling Tarpon won out over it.

So did I. It is the best water on the river. I guess I am just old school why would I want to pay here when I use to fish it for free.

GS,
You seem upset to have to pay for the DSR and I respect that, but to say flossing, snagging or whatever else it may be happen just as much at the DSR as the rest of the river is somewhat of a stretch of truth. I've fished DSR for 8 hours plus and never had or seen a single complaint. MANY TIMES. Yet I go sit at the bridge below the fly fishing area and could write 100 tickets in 10 min., so yes it is very different. It must of been great to have the luxury to fish the DSR when it was free. Times change, lifting is illegal, gas is $4 a gallon and so on. I guess we have different views on fishing and what it does for us as individuals, but lets not make this into a DSR thread.

And by all means let's not make it a snag/floss thread either. We are all big boys here & know what happens there.
I don't think any of us are one of the bad guys. In fact I'm pretty sure most that visit here strive to educate the people who just don't know any better. Amen.

GS:
you made some bold statements on I believe your first post here. I never claim to know more or catch more than anyone else. If that ever were the case what’s the point, I live and learn. Hum , that just rubbed me wrong in which seems to keep digging deeper, sorry If that’s the case. You don't know me or how I do business and I you, life goes on and this will not become "As The World Turns"

P.S.
The Black River , Been there done that. No thanks. they still use crickets at the dam ?

My last thoughts to this thread
Silly season is about to begin.Cant'ya feel it

Here is a thought for everyone to try. Bring a small bag(plastic) with you and do a quick pick up when the fishing slows. I know you don't want to be anyones mother but if you walk past a mess some slob left, are you any better? It only takes a second to bend over and grab it. Unless you have a bad back, heh heh. Maybe then some land owners won't think different of us.

Stress is just one hookset away from being gone.

Good thinking Coho.  Has anybody or will anybody do a walk down the stream or even go to the hatchery to see if anything is moving?

The state should have got rights to the whole river. I dont lift or fish illegal but I dont want to see the salmon river go to the savages eaither. DSR is good but Barkley left a bad taste in everyones mouth the way he went about taking over that part of the river. I dont blame the people who go down there and fish because thta streach is the best salmon water in the river. But when you own as much as he does and the gets more he is hurting business that these people depend on. Mark my words the local are mad there will be problems. Me I know alot of spots but I will go down there to these people reactions when they cant go down there anymore.

I asked them to hold it back until your arrival. Then the orders are to go to 5000 cfs.

I was fishing in Oswego today by the dam and I came across a dead sturgon. If I was estmating it was about 70 to 80 pds. If anyone lives up there they should take a look at it. Its laying just up from last stairway trust me you cant miss it.

Anyone but me a little concerned about the lake fishery for salmon this year. There is no pattern whats so ever. I think its going to be a very late start to the run.

Why would you think late?

Did you get a pic. of that dead Sturgeon? I'd enjoy seeing that.

Oswego is fun.

GS, Why late? Is it the water temp? I've never really put a corelation into where they are in the lake compared to date. I guess it would be cool to start keeping track. I'm curious on what kind of data you have to suspect a late run

Fished it when it was free myself. Always been great water but it was a snagfest before DSR came into being. People still lift and line there but not to the extent that goes on in the rest of the river. I fish it rarely these days in part because of the fee but also because my time in is short supply. It is still the best piece of water on the river to fish for relitively fresh and unspooked salmon (the ones that are still aggressive and will bite).

GS you don't know Tuna. He is different and does know what he is doing on the river! I have never used his guide service but I have fished with him and will vouch for his ability and ethics.

I have a old vhs tape of myself catching an Atlantic in the tail out of the old lower clay but have no idea as to how to post something like that since it is not digital. Oh ya and even if it  were digital I am a computer moron and have no cut and paste skills.

No need for defense, it's all good.
GS: I said my peace and we are cool, i'd like to share some water together, I think we would have a great day sharing stories & landing fish. Shoot me a PM or feel free to give me a call.

As for Salmon being late ?
what does one call Late ?
Sept 20 ish ? to me thats typical, now second week in Oct, thats a little late. What does the journal show for the latest first run ?  Mine says Oct-15th.
Earliest "push" ? (good numbers)  again I have Aug-4th
It seems people try (wish) like heck to have a "run" by Labor Day weekend (why not it's a holiday weekend)  but in reality that's just a hope to have fish to fish to.

I'll start posting the usual SR info within a week or so once DSR opens.
I'll be reporting from the river but it may be all about the pike

As for being late same as you. I got the year right back in 96 the same pattern set up in the lake and the first good run didnt come up until the 1st or 2nd week of Oct. Its funny you said the earlyest push you can rember was Aug 4th. That was in 94 and I fished that hole week in the ballpark and town hole without hardly seeing anybody. I wa short lived though 1 week later they were dead. As for labor day a good rule for me has been this the week after there is always fish in the river you might have to do some walking but there there. I think it would be cool to swap storyies with your knowledge and mine we could be there for awile. Have ever fish osagatichie river in Odganesburge. It flows into the st lawarance. They have great runs of salmon and steelhead and its all to yourself. I live in syracuse. Are you out of pulaski?

The pattern in the lake is off. This happened in 96 and we still had good runs they were just late. These storms on the lake is causing diffrent water patterns and keeping the cooler water from reaching the shoreline and bays. There has been rip currents just of shore latley. 70% of salmon making there mind up when to enter the rivers is temp. Water does help but think back to last yr not much water at all and they still came in. The temp is what kick the in gear. Ive seen the water roaring on labor day before and seen nothing. A week later you get 3-5 days 45-50 degrees weather with a current of 185 and there there. I hope the storms die out.

Not in years but yes nickle to quarter sized spots on their chests. The rumor I heard was Canadian stocking as well but a fisheries biologist fiom MI wrote that it was not a dye mark but a weird fungal growth.
