I heard the good time was in April... is May more productive?

it could be more productive in april, but it is against the law.i dont know about ohio, but on lake erie in pennsylvania it would be illegeal to keep a walleye in april.  Check the dates because walleye does not open up until the first saturday of may.  by the end of may, the water is too warm and the fish move out.  so, may is the only month that you can realisticly catch fish from shore on lake erie in pennsylvania.  inland waters are another story.

So because we can't legally keep the walleye does it mean that we can't fish for and catch them? I would just like to catch a few big ones and maybe figure out a pattern for catching them before the season opens but I wasn't sure if you can do that or not. Thanks, jim

In that case you would just be throwing large lures for steel and these **** big eyes keep interupting my fishing by getting hooked. Sounds ok to me..

If you want to catch eye in April, go to the Maumee river.

It is by Toledo, Only an extra hour drive if you are from Pitt. River gets runs of walleyes like erie gets steelhead.  some guys are snagging fish, but you can catch them legal fairly easy.

Oh yeah.... Just as crazy. But every other person next to you is the gestapo so if someone close to you snags a fish, dont be the one that nets it. If that guy tries to keep it and gets caught, you'll get written up too. No warning either. They make a lot of money up there at that time of year.

Has anyone ever tried using a fly rod? Since the water is fairly shallow I was thinking maybe a Dahlberg diver? It would make more noise and action than a subsurface fly for fishing at night. Or maybe just a large black fly to help them sillhouette the fly. I would think it would be hard for them to find a fly because it doesn't have any rattles. Thanks, Jim

Mikeg,

Thanks for deleting the post from eriecombo and keeping this board clean.  Now that my 7 year old gets on and reads some of the posts, I sort of worry he may come across posts like that.

Thanks again!

What if you put on a floating jig head 1/2 oz slip sinker and a big "golden" shiner not an emrald@ the mouths of the tribs? A stiff rod, and cast as far as you can to help out the light problem a little? Just an idea? has anyone ever gave live bait a shot up there?

Just curious, do you guys have better luck in windy conditions when the waves get a little bigger or on calm nights? I will be out every chance I get anyway, just wanted something to compare my results with. Thanks, Jim

Calm nights are the ticket.  We trolled last year with decent success.  Averaged 5 fish a night through Mid June..

How deep you pull the goods kinda varies.  One night you'll do good in 10ft of water the next 15ft.

Our best baits are Renosky Crystalina Minnows in Firetiger, and the regular reef runner non deep diver.  According to the packages they dive from 5-12 ft.  But you troll very very slow.

Thanks Bagger, I am still considering heading out to try tonight but am not sure if it will be worth braving the cold and wind, and I still need to finish my studies for the night. Will post my results if I do decide to go. Jim

You get some calm nights in may and june that are very enjoyable and comfortable and productive.  I know im going to put in more time this year at night...  Its not exactly torture...
