Spring walleye at the Mouths of the Tribs
Hey guys, I have heard a few people talking about tremendous walley fishing at the mouth of walnut and elk creek in the spring. What time of year does this usually start? Is the mouth of trout run a good spot for spring walleye? I have never caught a walleye from sure but I would definately love to try! any info on this would be much appreciated! Thanks guys! Jeremy

My understanding is that the walleye fishing is best at night during the spring. The Walleye will come in close to the shore. Bigben is right about the lures. Most people use large Rapalas. I would expect anything you would normally use for walleyes would work.

The walleye fishing in front of the tribs usually starts when the water temp is around 43-45 degrees or so. It is generally hit or miss, sometimes they are there, sometimes not. Mostly not, from my experiences. Sometimes they don't get there until midnight, sometimes later. I've had my best luck very early in the morning (4:30 am to sunrise). The walleye are big and usually filled with smolts! If you have trouble sleeping and like standing in cold water casting in the dark, give it a try. Large Rapalas and Model A bombers in shiner colors work well, just reel them in SLOWLY and hang on.

Finally started doing the night time thing last year a few times...Enjoyed it. Didnt catch any of the big fat pigs, but did see a few nice ones caught by friends. A headlamp is a must if you are trolling from a boat...Last year picked up a fish on the outside of the net and he kicked off...pretty funny...Ended up taping a mag light to my net to finish off that evening. Started this in late May. Troll alot of shallow diving plugs. Renosky, Storm, Rapala, and Reef Runners all seemed to work. You dont really set the world on fire out there, but it can be fairly productive. And as stated above the fish are feeding heavily and stuffed full of bat.

I have had good luck at the mouth of 12 mile.. They enter the stream at the mouth for their fill of smolts.. The trick is to get there before they enter the creek.. Once they enter the stream and you approach the creek or the mouth they get spooked and like a thundering heard of buffalo they shoot back out into the lake. Once that happens I never have any luck.

I've heard that the walleye fishing is the best if you catch it at the right time. fishing from the shore is the best way to go. you need to have a couple jointed and straights because the action may trigger different results and more fish. you need to be moving around because the more ground you cover the better chances you have.
The fishing and hunting is pretty good not so bad!!!

Yes, and you will not be alone. People in and out all night long. Trout run is no secret. I've seen several good sized fish caught.

Shore fishing is good as long as the boat anglers show some respect and don't spook the fish. We had problems last year with boaters anchoring just out of casting distance and leaving their lights on, banging around in the boats, etc. If they want to fish that close to shore, I don't know why they don't fish from shore with the rest of us. Without the boats it is a pleasant, peaceful and fun experience. There is nothing like having a ten pounder blow up on a plug right in front of you in the dark. It has been my experience that some years they prefer a certain type of plug. It is a good idea to have a wide selection.

You do of course realize that you HAVE to leave your lights on in a night fishing situation by law. Fish Cops hang out around elk and walnut creek looking for boats who have the lights off. I know alot of warnings and fines were issued last year early on due to no lights while night fishing.... As far as the shore fishing is concerned. Absolutly you can catch em from shore...I know alot of guys last year with near limits of walleyes casting at night from shore. the big rapalas are very popular for this practice...

This topic seems to come up every year when springtime is near. Like someone above stated, the conditions have to be just about perfect. Water temp, a calm evening, outside temp and finally walleye. The weather made it tough last spring for me, but I would imagine that the guys who live right there could experiment on a consistant basis and be much more successful. And yes, some guys do fish from shore right at the mouth of the creeks. Hopefully spring comes nice and early, but then again when the weather gets nice, I 'know what I'll be doing, hitching up the boat and heading......WEST!

Another thing - they're not just by the creek mouths. You can find hungry walleye cruising the shallows all along the shore at night in the spring. There may be a higher concentration near creek mouths at certain times but we've had some of our best nights trolling over two to three miles away from creek mouths. Best thing we've used to detect strikes at night is by using those tiny clip-on glow sticks that attach to the end of your rod tip. They'll last all night long and you won't need to have unnecessary lights on in the boat to see your rods (nav lights are on of course).

IUP- Check your local Dollar Tree. They sell the glow necklaces, I think 3 x 6 packs for $1. They're a bit bigger than the tip ones, but much cheaper. I use them for cat fishing and surf fishing the ocean. I haven't done much night trolling, but is a great idea for that too. Thanks for the reminder!! Easily put on by rubber bands, try to remember to put them on before lining your rod though. Beats the heck out of staring at a rod tip that you can barely see.

I've done this several times. Never had any luck myself, but my buddy caught the biggest walleye I've ever seen landed at the mouth of Trout Run. 32" estimated 12-13 lbs. It's really a shot in the dark if you have any distance to drive. By the way, my buddy's walleye was caught on a big rainbow trout rapala.

IUP I have to agree...we do quite well away from the creek mouths and it's nice not to have to fight the crowd that hovers around walnut. If you don't mind me asking, how deep of water do you troll. We seem to have the best luck in the 18-30 feet depth range. I hear of guys trolling 5-10 feet but I can't seem to get anything that shallow.

Theres walleye around in the spring ;) Any creek mouth is a good starting point. Trout Run prolly tops the list both trolling and casting. Best time to land a big walleye, took my biggest for the year on May 15th last year 33inch, 11#3oz. Your dont get quanity but you do get quality.

We didn't get any big ones last year all were 8lbs and under, with some 20-24 inch. I throw the hogs back anyway, and keep the smaller ones. We have caught them hundreds of yards away from the creek mouths. An old man told us about a point to fish that has no creek and is a great night fishing spot, however we have allways fished the general area of the creek mouths. We have caught 10lb+ fish, and many times been skunked. Cast for 4 hours in the dark without a hit a couple evenings and try geting excited about going again. You have to beleave, next cast is the one. Then kaboom right in front of you! If you need constant action don't take up night time walleys or musky fishing.

I've caught a few large ones. One weighed 13.75. Go to the lake during a calm night, throw on a size 18 rapala and reel REAL slow. They'll follow you all the way in. I've been wading the lake and have caught them behind me. No lights!! Go up on shore if you need to use a light. Any trib mouth will do. The guy at the trib mouth doesn't have any better chance than the guy 200 yards down the shoreline. Two fish is a great night.

Storymaker - we fish anywhere from 25 feet in with our planer boards sometimes only 50 yards off-shore. It all depends but we've had great luck trolling in 15 FOW. Planer boards are key during the night time bite in the spring. Spread those baits out, lean back and watch those glow tips. Pork - thanks for the tip on those glow sticks also..I'll have to check them out. The one thing I like about the one you can buy at the bait shops is that they have a type of clip that snaps onto the top of your rod tip and has an insert for the glow stick. You can take them off and put them on without re-rigging or re-tying. Our best bait for BIG eyes has consistently been a black and silver jointed Bomber Long A. Seems to attract the big dogs most consistenly. We only sometimes troll with the #18 Rapalas and tend to stick with shallow Reef Runners and the like.
