That area is or at least was, one of the fastest growing areas in the country for the past 20 years. I could see it being crowded. Add in those visiting.

Fished Tarentum this morning, the action was pretty dismal to be honest.  I caught one walleye that was the length of a dollar bill and three smallmouth. Needless to say I think I'm done fishing the river until the fall.

Well I threw a prop guard and a skeg guard on the 9.9 and took the boat up to fisherman’s cove today. I also made a tiller extension out of some PVC tubing so I could stand up front and look for rocks and shallow water. It looked ridiculous but it worked.

Got about 2 miles up the river and fished around the islands. I mostly just beached the boat and waded.

Got one 18” and a bunch of smaller ones. Had another bruiser come off about 10 feet away from where I was wading.

Decent day overall. Although I might not hit that stretch on a Sunday again. Little too much boat traffic for my taste. But it’s good to know I can get through that skinny water if I try. I’m pretty sure I saw a couple other guys in prop boats too.

Kayaked the Allegheny from tidioute to hickory on Saturday with some friends that don’t fish. The water was pretty muddy from the rain. Mostly just floated and drank beer but I had a big paddletail with an underspin tied on that I was throwing from time to time. Ended up landing two decent bass and I hooked into a big one right under the bridge at hickory when we were taking out. Spit the hook before I could land him. I was bummed. It definitely would have impressed my buds that I was kayaking with.

We went out again Sunday and the water had cleared up a decent amount. Visibility was maybe 1’ the day before, but probably closer to 3’ or so Sunday. Put maybe 10 in the boat but nothing very big. All on black and blue big TRDs.

Good weekend on the water.

I floated the Yough, Dawson/Layton. Landed over 30. Most 10”—12”. 2 at 18” and 4 in the 15” range. My buddy did similar. Mine all on neds until I ran out of the jerk baits (only packed 2), switched to Zoom flukes and seemed to do about as well. Had two break me off. They were heavy, but no crazy runs. Set the hook a few shakes then gone. Had about the same hits as landed. Fun float for sure. Didn’t get a sniff on senkos, but didn’t use too long.

One of the better three day stretches of fishing for me in a while. After my float trip, I had to pack my work travel bags for a trip to, NJ. Was able to get out yesterday for about 2 hours. In that time, lost count of how many bluefish I either caught, got off at my feet or had on for for a few cranks. It was every cast for a while, with many getting off and instantly another on. Today, it started a little later. Second client today decided to throw a few extra things at me than expected. Nice getting extra work, but not when it cuts into my fishing time!!! Seemed that the bite was delayed today anyway, not much when I got my line wet at 6PM. Turned on like crazy the last half hour of light and left while it was every cast. High tide was well above the tide line today with the super moon and still pushing in at dusk, so made packing up at dark an easier decision. That and pretty much knowing “one more cast” was likely hooking a 12”-15” bluefish. Was a very welcome trip. Surf fishing is what “vacation” is to me. When we do something else, it just doesn’t feel like vacation to me. Not that a few hours is the same, but almost.

Got them all on my own casting metal. Sort of my own. Bought the poured lead blanks from eBay and added the foil, air brushed and epoxied. Pink and silver. Crazy what they were coughing up. Some sand eels, large and small chunks of glass minnows and one of the bigger ones coughed up a 2”x2” chunk of fish.

Got a mess of keeper Lane snapper, ending up 22 miles off shore the day after I caught the snook. Didn't get the big bite we were hoping for, though. Waves were 1ft or less. Made for a nice ride, going that far.

Where you at again?  No grouper?
Nice catches above...still never caught a snook or tarpon myself, but never really targeted them when I lived in TX and had to go WAY south  to have a decent chance at them (the snook).

Might not have to go as far south as you used to.

https://www.saltwaterspor...nook-expand-northward/

Those warmer water fish are moving north. 30 years ago going to the OBX, I had never seen or heard of anyone catching Spanish mackerel or pompano. Now two of the more common species. I see reports in NJ now of a few being caught every so often as well. Tarpon are being caught in Maryland…

Pretty cool being able to catch those fish more north, but also rather concerning that those warmer waters are hitting the polar ice, melting and raising the water levels. Taking away the barrier islands with them. Not sure if the OBX will be there for the next generations.

SW Florida. Went offshore out of stump pass. Caught several short red grouper, but nothing took the big bait at the spots we tried. Grouper are out of season, so we weren't targeting them very hard, as 65-70 FOW is questionable for releasing them safely. I saw either a big cobia or small shark about 4-5' long swim by the back of the boat, but it wasn't interested in the lure we had ready for it. The area is still pretty ravaged by the previous hurricane. Lots of houses and businesses still with tarps on their roofs. Chain link fences with top rails bent in zig zags. My parents had a lot of their bigger trees damaged or blown over, now their understory tropical plants are suffering with the extra direct sun.

Was thinking to float the Yough today. Connellsville gauges looked kind of high though. Sutersville not though. But figure at some point that water will be there. Not just the water, but whatever else gets flushed in after storms.

I was looking to get out yesterday afternoon too. I ended up hitting the Allegheny. There’s a little stretch up around Parker that doesn’t seem to get too muddied up. It’s weird actually, the one side of the river will be chocolate milk, and the other will be 3 or 4 ft of visibility. It’s nice to be able to hit that spot when we get heavy rain like we did on Saturday.

Re: anyone fishing 2023/08/14 13:31:17 (permalink)
Most of the others in my group were planning to tube. So, what was in the high water was most of the concern. Not sure if the Yough or upper Allegheny has the CSO concerns that the three rivers closer to town has. I didn’t want to find out from experience either. One thing to be in a kayak than to be in a tube.

What is kind of crazy, Connellsville gauge started to spike at 10AM. Sutersville started raising fast around 2-3PM. They aren’t all that far between them. I would have thought it would have taken far less time to rise. Would have definitely hit us during our planned launch at Smithton and pull at Cedar Creek. Who knows, maybe just made it a faster float? But I had fished during CSO releases before and just disgusting. This was shore fishing and just left. Would be traumatized in a tube…

More rain today too. I’m supposed to be heading up to my buddies cabin at tidioute this weekend. Wonder if the river will be in decent shape by then.

Hopefully today is the only real drencher.  But that is probably wishful thinking.  Never really seem to know which way these storms will track until the day of too.  Most of the heavy downpours seem to be smaller cells and can flood an area, but 20 miles away is sprinkles.  I was hoping to get out next weekend to make up for missing, but have some other obligations having most of my weekend tied up.  Work is getting too busy to take a weekday day off.  If the Yough is in decent shape, I might be able to carve out a couple hour wade.  Doesn't look like I'll be getting any full day dedicated fishing trips in until October though.  At least the last three times out, I hammered some fish.  So, I guess not as bad as riding a skunking and the need to wash it off!

Was very bad around 6:20 pm, Saturday on rt 80 coming back from my sisters place in Cooks Forest. Got off Knock / Emlenton exit to wait it out, almost zero visibility.

Guy sent me some photos a little bit ago from my place near The Linesville Marina. Lady next door said our powerlines were down, 70 mph winds and Ping-Pong sized hail. A lot of damage in the area.

Another branch bites the dust. More firewood for me and less leaves to rake.
