Were the trout you caught of better quality than previous years??

Just curious to know how many of you noticed if the stocked trout this year were any larger than previous years.  If you'd like, include your catches, place you fished and any additional comments.  Thanks!

I fished the Slippery Rock Creek with my daughter until noon and we did not notice anything larger than previous years.  We did notice a lot of browns though (small)....But we had fun!  Thats really all that matters.  This fish being the largest....below

For the most part, the fish were bigger than the last few years.  Pretty much every fish I caught was 11-12 inches.  All cookie cutter brookies.  Some were a little thicker than others, but they were all pretty standard.

The two streams that I fished in the SE of Penna. had overall slightly larger fish than the past with some lunkers thrown into the mix.The largest that I caught was a 22" brown in a C&R area,it was a stocked fish. Many were 11 to 13 and also a bunch of dinks,7 to 9 inches. It was nice to get out but it sure is n't what I get excited about, the Steel and Salmon spoil you!

I know what you're saying pafisher.  This year was the first year I have gone out on the opening day in about 10 years...I figured I'd start the tradition back up for the kids.  I can't wait for walleye, smallmouth and perch fishing Erie this year!

Hi there Mr. pink donut man....haven't heard from you in awhile, how have you been?

Anyway, It seems different areas are having differrent results.  So far, the Slippery Rock area and Herford area I have fished have yielded the average fish we've seen in years past.  I'll be trying an area of the Neshannock this evening by myself, so hopefully I can report something better/different.  Don't get me wrong however, I'm not complaining....We caught plenty of fish so far.  I'm not that big of trout fisher fanatic as it is anyway.  I just like to see the kids having fun with them until its time for some serious fishing!

I have caught and released a ton of fish this year

How many "meaty" fish add up to a ton?  I'd think 2700 or so eh?  They're pretty close to a pound, well, most of them.

On state stocked streams the fish were bigger.  The 3CU trout are about the same as past years.

In the last two days at lower Herford I caught a Palomino about 18", a bow about 20 and another bow about 21".

Lots of 12 to 13" fish. Lots of smaller ones too.  The lower lake still has a ton of fish left from the fall and winter stocking, they were fish from Tellico trout hatchery in N.C. and for the most part were smaller on average than the state hatchery fish that were stocked for opening day.

I've fished Hereford, Neshannock, and deer creek for stocked trout this spring. In my opinion we did get what the fish commission said they were going to do.  A slightly bigger on average size trout.  30 percent bigger than what they were before still isn't all that big,  probably about 11 inches.

    Stillhead,

I haven't fished there in years, but when you were up at Herford, did you notice all the garbage around the lower lake?  I fished the NE side of the lake and walked that whole shoreline and noticed a ton of garbage all along those banks and in the woods behind the lake.  It was pretty sad looking.  I wonder who cleans that mess up, why they don't put some garbage cans around the lake....not that the pigs would really take the time to use them anyway.  It just goes to show how many true and considerate stortsmen really fish that place.....What a shame.

Yeah, it gets trashed every year on opening day.  It's actually heavily patrolled but there are just too many asses out there the first couple days to keep up with.

The only nice thing about the weather were having, is the crowds are gone already,  hardly anyone out since saturday. I caught another Palomino today, not very big though, about 15 inches , maybe a little bigger.

Today's fish were much bigger.  I even saw one guy land a brown that was probably 18".  He already had a limit, so he gently placed it back in the stream, though not without a quick look at the 2 barely-legal ones he had just roped.

Very pleased with the size of fish this year compared to last year. Many fish in the 10 to 13 inch range. Last year was lucky to catch 9 - 10 inchers. Some I don't think were legal.

I thought the same thing.  And that head shake just don't compare.  They act too much like my 4yr old boy.  ...all fidgety and twitchy.

Nice fish this year, though.  I've had the chance to get out and get 2 limits.  Only one fish under 10", and the second limit were all 11 1/4" - 12".  Not the 13" - 15" I've read about, but good none the less.  Good grillin' is sure to come.

I must say after sampling the creeks for a week the size does seem to be up a bit from previos years. Have hit some nice rainbows and a couple nice browns. Very few dinks.

In respect to your question about the size the fish are , I found out that it all depends on where you were fishing. I started on the early opening first day in the south east counties. I found them to be a bit larger and heavier than other years. I fish Center County on the regular opening day and I will say that a decent amount of trout were "large", palominoes and rainbows. BUT, the majority of fish were smaller than the past years. Can`t have everything, thanks for what we do have. I would like to know how the trout fishermen felt about the two different starting dates. Did you take advantage of them  or was it not feaseable to attend both ? This may be a thing for years to come . Well, tight lines all.

I can say this year has been really well for me with only focusing on fishing since Im leaving soon Ive caught more fish over 20 and didnt have to keep them to feel good. I knew I caught them an thats all that mattered. You bet the steelhead spoiled me but thats what I love about fly fishing its causing a challenge and I love it. but I do think there have been bigger fish this year only because Im getting to them before the guys who keep em.

the frist 2 stalkns where i live we average size same as last year,  the 3rd stalkning was the one wit the bigger ones put in, its done all over the state. the bigger ones are put in last because 90% of the fisherman are done fishing the streams after  a month or so after the stalkings. it also give the youngersters a chance to catch a real nice one. sooo if u got kids dont give up fishing just beacuse u think there are no fish left there are plently of them out there we put in almost 6 mil soo go buy more fishing supplies an equipment, an dont complain about the quality of them ok?  if people would through sum back once an a while we would not have to stalk them.

I talked to a guy who claimed to be a mearin biologagagagist, I think he meant a biologist,  said the fish in the late stockings are bigger because they had an extra month of being fed pellets in the hatchery.
