Jeb,

No real secret to catch a palomino at all. If you find one all you need is Patience and alot of it.Maybe a bit of luck as well. Seriously how many people can drift to the same fish many hundreds of times without giving up? both that I landed this year took me many hours of cast after cast to finaly get to hit and were both in deep holes. There are times when I swear that them fish are 1000 times smarter than an average trout. While I have seen them caught on just about every bait, lure and fly by far the best have been waxworms and #12 beadhead phesant tail nymphs. the one I posted the pic of was caught on a phesant tail nymph and the one yesterday was on a brownie sac. both fish I had tossed everything I had at , and both pretty much put me into a total panic attack trying to muster up the Patience need to get them to bite.Them palominos are mean nasty tight lipped son of a $%&$* but all worth it when you finaly land one..My opening day one took me 8 straight hrs of fishing the same hole just to get and the one yesterday took no less then 3 striaght hrs. If you get one you are ether very lucky or seriously hardcore Patience..

SO MANY FISH SO LITTLE TIME.

Both that I caught were in lower lake at herford, so mostly just the luck of them swimming by me.  Apparently the beadhed pheasant tail is on their menu this year, that's what I caught the second one on. The first one hit a white jig.

An osprey flew over my head today with one,  very well could have been the one I caught yesterday, it was about the same size. I don't think he was using flies, lol.

In the streams I like beadhead nymphs or olive/black buggers.  I've caught a few on caddis flies as well. If all that fails, and the stream is open to bait fishing, they are just a dumb rainbow, salmon eggs will catch'em.

Good job on the nice fish, but what makes palominos, or more properly called golden rainbow trout, so special and such a highly held "prize"?  They are just a rainbow with different color pigmentation.  I see too many people go nuts over these yellow trout. lol. I don't keep many trout, but I make it a practice to catch and kill every palomino I come by, not because I hate them, but because they are the only reason why alot of guys stop to fish a hole, which increases pressure for other fish. Call me greedy, sure, why wouldn't I want my favorite trout holes to have less pressure in them.

If anyone spends hours trying to catch one trout, I suggest a change in bait or pattern, and if still nothing, move on.  If you present to them what they are feeding on, they will take it.

I got all 5 of the palominos this past Saturday and Sunday out of the creek, and not one took more than 5 minutes to get. Just a matter of matching the hatch.

Nice fish oon the pin again Tom. Any trout that big in Pa anymore is a good catch....sad isn't it?

Mike

Tom,
I know, I know, I just got bad luck with them. Went out last night and got 19, one real big & fat 15" bow. I saw a kid catch a 23-25" bow that was pretty thick too. Sorry I didn't call, got tied up with the kids when I got home. Well tight lines to all

Thanks,

I didnt use a centerpin to catch theses...(hopefully my pic shows up)They were swimming around in a hole right behind camp...I watched guys were messing with them all day...Caught both of them once and they got off both times...They were hanging around and under a fallen tree...I gave up on them once - got tired of getting hung up 100 times...

Went back up to camp...ate...Waited till All the dudes left...grabbed a few beers and walked back down...Tried a different tactic and bam....got em both...Both were released...a blast indeed...Hopefully some kid comes back and catches them...

I only caught one once before about 10 years ago...Sorry phone pic is kinda crappy...

I think it mostly has to do with the rarity why people want them so much. I used to do the same thing with the catch and kill everyone I found for the same reason you do but this year I have been a bit nicer and let 2 of the 3 I got go..below is my 3rd of the year this one is for you Jeb...

Spoon caught one yesterday. I wonder if that link to the Q and A about Palomino's is up to date.  I think they've started stocking the true palomino-rainbows again. This is the second one I've seen that was a dull/dirty yellow. But of course again my camera phone sucks so you can't see the true colors anyway.

Stillhead,

I think what is going on is even though they got a more true bread of the goldens aka palominos they still are a rainbow and will make regular or halfway inbetween no matter how hard they try..I read once when they bread them that they got 50% good deep colored goldens 25% golden/rainbow(like the one spoony got) and 25% regular rainbow. I have in the past caught more then a few off colored ones as well even though the vast majority of them had good color. Landed one back in the mid 90's the back look an off light green but sides were yellow and it had alot of white spots on it..weird looking fish for sure..

I'm sorry, but I have to wonder about someone who would pound on a single fish for hours. I've seen some beautiful fish in the water, that I would truly love to catch. I have never seen one that I felt such a NEED to catch. Several casts with 4-5 different baits, tells me it's time to move on, to active fish.

Spoonie, I've always agreed with your thoughts on most things, but you seem to be contradicting yourself here . You said the ones you got this year took you "many hours of cast after cast". The next sentance you go on about guys who pressue a single for hours on end, ??????
I'm not bashing you Spoon, just trying to figure out your thoughts !!!!

I was quoting Eggsac, not saying I spent hours drifting to one fish. It's not an attack on him as a person. I just wonder about the motivation behind such a NEED to catch an individual fish.

Spoony,

My motivation is plain and simple that I can care less about catching tons of fish ( exception: panfish) I want quality over quanity and a good challenge. I have plaied the numbers game so many times its not funny and its not a challange anymore. Trout under normal conditions are not rocket science to catch and can get a bit boring at times. I just love the challange of catching bigger and more rare fish. We each have our own vices and that is one of mine. Plus I think the palominos/ golden rainbows are realy neat fish. To me catching one 15 plus inch trout is better than catching 100 average size ones.

To each his own I guess. Personally, if I had to pound a fish for 3+ hours to catch it, I wouldn't consider it much of an accomplishment. I am pretty sure that I could make a foulshot blindfolded in less than 3 hours.
