So no one remembers the posts from 7 or 8 yrs ago predicting The Epic Run of 2017? Anyway, it was funny then, but even funnier now seeing no one remembers it.

Its official....... The Genie has checked in.

I go back to 1985ish.  After Halloween the tribs above Route 5 were desolate of anglers. I recall weekends in November never seeing another fisherman in the Upper or Lower Legion Holes on Elk, and Beckman Rd (above I-90), ahhhhh, that was no mans land, truly paradise.

PT2

mid '80s is when I started too, PT (in Ohio)
Can't recall (I'm ole duud) when I first crossed the boarder to Pa waters .
Late '80s/early '90s for sure though

I quickly discovered if you fished above rt 5 you'd find miles of fish all to yourself .
....and fell in love with Elk from Conrail tubes to Rick rd
..........................................................................................................................................

predictions....
we'll  never see the runs of '99 to '03  again where pret'near  every hole and run from Elk mouth to rt 79 was full of fish from mid Oct to ice over
I've determined those were actually anomaly years

what we've seen in the last 8-10 years and early '90s  is really  the norm, methinks .
The biggest difference in the early '90s and now isn't the numbers of fish...it's the number of anglers coupled with  less creek miles to legally stomp

Epic runs ? ...LOL
Yea about 15-20 years ago.......mini runs now....maybe even micro !

Yep.  I moved back to Erie in 2003.   2003-2005  were pretty unbelievable.  When I tell folks about the steelhead in the east side creeks back then they look at me like I'm nuts.   2003-2004  I fished over 100 days.   All on the east side.   Mostly on 7 mile and 16 mile, and 4 mile at the beginning of the season.  Never went to the west side.   The last three years have been pitiful.  I even went to Walnut last year, and had the stop sign hole to myself in mid-October.  There were about 10 fish there.

Also last year, I pulled into the Twenty mile creek parking lot a couple of hours before sunset, and there was one car, in October.  They were leaving as I started walking down, and told me, don't bother.  They were right.  No water, no fish.

The last few years I've been fishing mostly Elk.  I live between 4 mile creek and 7 mile.  12 mile has been totally dead the last couple years.  Way back that was loaded with fish too.

And it's not the fault of folks keeping fish. lol    They should do another creel survey like they did in the early 2000's.  It would be hilarious to compare.
Nagy had it in one of his original Steelhead Guides.

And wow, this forum has really died a slow death I guess.  This time of year there would be a hundred or so signed in.  I think there's five or so on.    Ce la vie.

Signing out.

Yea it sure has dwindled down. I think a lot have moved on to Face Book plus it's the same old arguments or discussions we had over the years. Also there are no secrets or anything new around Erie it's all been done before or fished over. I laugh when they police "no spot burning" ! Biggest joke there is now days !  Post or no post it's going to be busy sooner or later fish or no fish......they come anyway.

I agree Capt. there is nothing left to burn. That ship sailed years ago. I also agree that the "all guys keeping fish" is not the problem these days. There simply are fewer fish returning in the fall. Too many walleye eating the smolts entering the lake in the spring, fewer smolts being stocked, smolt mortality, disease, parasites, I dunno? I do know in the heyday the fall runs were a blood bath. There was an endless stream of anglers hauling their limits of fish to the parking areas on a daily basis, and guess what, there were plenty of fish available throughout the system, winter and into the spring. I would like to see the PBFC revisit closing the tribs to fishing after the smolts are stocked. I believe it was March 1 - 1st day of Trout Season. Say what you will, imho those smolts take beating.

Just my .03 cents

Your right on PT. The problem has been after the first several early runs barely nothing shows up behind them as far as numbers. Weather makes little difference . Not like years ago we would catch fish up near I-79 and pack up and go fish the Elk Access the same day and still catch fresh fish ! Now that's scattered runs !

spot burns are still the same today as yesteryear

many of us "take a chance" and stalk upper ends early in hopes of finding fish that aren't surrounded  by 30 rods .
Often rewarded with low density anglers  AND lots of  fish

til someone feels the need to yap online..."hey guys, we caught a motherlode of fish at Folly's!!"

and then, there goes the neighborhood

I was up on 10/3 and there wasn't even fifty steelhead in Trout Run.  By now there should have been hundreds.  Fish in the streams are spooking on the cast before the bait gets near to them.

I just wannabe fishin instead of at work. :-( See they got a little rain last night/ this morning but sadly it looks like most of that heavy rain drifted too far east to help the tribs much. Oh well. Rain or no rain, I'll be up in less than two weeks, chuckin and duckin. Combat fishing at it's finest.

Can't disagree with you, even with this years low water. There has been some good fishing days for the few who have put in the time and miles to figured it out.
As for spot burning, I find that it is usually the non-local angler who comes in for a day or two, makes a discovery and posts it all over the internet. He's not coming back soon so he freely blabs while the old regulars deal with the aftermath of his report.

I've noticed over the past few years that most guys (not all) don't advertise their trib fishing adventures near as much as years past (that's good ). I'd say probably some have smartened up(finally), good fishing has also slowed, and there isn't as much to really tell anymore (it's all old news to most).

How many of yinz tie your line directly onto a Little Cleo, since they don't come with a split ring? Or many use a snap swivel?
