Power bait, rubber salmon eggs, pink bubble gum trout worms, yarn on a hook,( your choice of color),kernel can corn, a piece of ( color of choice sponge soaked in cod liver oil,Berkley assorted fake minnows and worms. Those steelhead are extremely smart. Just like the king salmon that run up to Burts damm. I seen local kids pounding the on hot dogs. Yea there extremely smart. Yea there are days when the fish don't cooperate  but most days they can be caught. They'll hit something, you'll got to be smarter than them and figure it out. Just like all fishing, they can be caught, presentation, the right bait or lure, right color even seen where the wrong color line wouldn't work.

What are predictions for this years run? I hope with the colder temps and the rain predicted , the run will be plentiful this year. Goodluck this season everyone and tight lines

Cooler temps?   Rain?   September is going to set a record for high temps, and least rain.   We may not get any steel in the creeks until Thanksgiving, especially on the East side.  My opinion.  IANAW  (I am not a weatherman)

What's everybody setup for chucking spoons on the beach?

I run a 9 ft noodle rod in the tribe with 6 lb mono, double unit knot to 4 and sometimes 6 lb fluro leader. Thinking that this wont cut it with fresh steelies making big runs

Part of me thinks the noodle rod is ok, but need to beef up the line? Or go with a 7 foot spinning rod with beefed up line??

All depends on how much company is next to you. Nothing better than fighting fresh Steelhead on the lake shores. They actually have room to burn your drag and head to Canada. If you have no company, light line and rods are fine. If everybody is standing and waiting on you to reel the fish in so they can fish you better beef up !

Don't forget to bring your own net that helps, especially if your releasing fish.

12' surf rod 20lb mono with a 30lb test shock leader about two foot, make sure it fluro is they can't see it. Choice lure 2 oz. Michigan cricket, make long cast, them make a ripping motion, two to three foot rips seem to be most productive. Hold on these beast are really tough to land. Once beached attach to a yellow rope. Drag back to your vehicle, this helps to improve flavor. Seriously 7-9 foot light action rod 6 lb test 1/3 oz. Cleo. Caught hundreds never had issues, there's a lot of room for big runs. Never had a break off,but did snap off a few Cleo's power casting.

I use a 8'6" MH (softer medium-heavy) float rod for shoreline casting. 20# braid with 10-12# fluoro leader until it gets below freezing then switch over to straight 10-12# mono. 1/3-3/4oz cleos and Flatfish.

I'm under the opinion that the smolts exit the streams as soon as the water warms up in the late spring.

I have caught them in lower walnut in mid to late June and used them for bait. Amazing how the big smallies and walleye loved them. That was before I was an upstanding law abiding member of society.

Nothing like catching fresh chrome in the lake! However if your at trout run you have limited time to get them in, so I would recommend heavier line.

When I fish the bay/ lake for smallies in the spring, one of my better baits is a rainbow trout colored senko. Always thought this did a good job of imitating the smolts.

Re: Steelhead 2017/09/26 09:47:01 (permalink)
It's true that steelhead, like most fish, are dumb when you look at the big picture. Fish don't really have any sort of problem solving or critical thinking skills. The only way for them to learn if something floating by is food, or something they should strike at, is to take it with their mouths. Unlike us, they don't have any way of feeling, smelling, holding, and thinking about if they should strike at it or not. However, with how these fish are cast to by countless anglers day after day from September through April, they become conditioned at deciding whether or not all the bits of fluff floating by are behaving like food, and if it isn't, they are good at waiting for one that is.

As for right now, while I've caught fish, and there are a few around, wet wading into bathtub water in 90 degree heat just doesn't feel like steelhead season to me yet. It's not just about the fish, always love the crisp fall mornings and dressing in layers, hot coffee, fall foliage, and more.

Granted all fish can be caught with persistence and skills. Are they dumb or are the odds in our favor ?
Fish become much easier to catch when......

A.- They are holding in good numbers in shallow creeks and holding holes.
B.- They can be seen in crystal clear water.
C.- They are fresh in from the lake and haven't started full spawn.
D.- They are Trout. ( Salmon are much more skittish and less feeding aggressive in creeks )

Take away these four and the game of catching becomes way more challenging even on dumb fish !
Try catching Steelhead in wide deep colored water, no sight fishing , full spawn fish or fish that have been there awhile. Somehow they are not as dumb or have the odds shifted their way ?

Impressive fish ! Completely agree about the fishing for pressured fish is no fun. Obsvously the fish in Erie are extremly pressured but the fish that are in right now are taking a pounding. They have lock jaw

You know Brock some of the most expert fly fishermen are pretty damm good at lifting or lining, whatever you want to call it.lol I watched an expert do this do this many moons ago, this guy was just killing them, after watching this fly guy land 4 or 5,I saw that all the fish where hooked on the outside corner of the mouth.lol Pretty sly but technically legal. I've never needed a fish that bad.lol

the facebook pages also   ....... I think there's a Pittsburgh steelhead page ... idk....  theres one down down my way (mercer county) that absolutely ruined and exploited a fishery... I wont name drop em bc then more idiots would show up .... you're right secrets out tho..

I asked the same question what's  a "mupear" 15 years ago
it was described to me like this

"where you from?"

"I mupear from Pittsburgh"

I laughed my azz off ..fo-reel

I go back before Al Gore invented the 'net
Walnut access was always pretty much "combat" fishing
just worser now

but the explosion of anglers up and down every creek came with the 'net and discussion board "reports" pages, coupled with the "glory days" of '99 to '05.
Like the 1850s  "gold rush" out west, the "Chrome rush" was on and angler traffic exploded

Fagbook and all the other social media, is just an extension of the 'net
..........................................................................................................................................

someone mentioned bagging on the mupears
We don't think you ruint the fishery
It's just that no one likes youinz really,  cause yur all a bunch of uncouth,   knuckle dragging  oafs, that's all

Its official....... The Genie has checked in.

I go back to 1985ish.  After Halloween the tribs above Route 5 were desolate of anglers. I recall weekends in November never seeing another fisherman in the Upper or Lower Legion Holes on Elk, and Beckman Rd (above I-90), ahhhhh, that was no mans land, truly paradise.
