Shenango Lake news

I see on the front page of the Herald Chestnut Run Swim Beach is closed down due to water quality does not meet safe health standards ! No swimming or wading .......so far no statements out . I know that algae was an issue last year, but I thought that was due to no rain or fresh water moving into the lake wonder what's up now ?  How are the fish tasting ?  Not good news with all the rain we've had .

Can't help at all Brock. I haven't fished there but maybe once all month. With all this rain, it could be a sewage over flow problem. Hopefully not tho.

Not sure what's going on at the lake. It has been greenish murky almost everytime I fished it, but last week the shorelines weren't too bad and it looked somewhat clearer. I know they have job johnnies set up around the Chestnut Run building for use. Hope they release some news soon they put the signs up and gates are closed so someone has the info.

Once again slow government information to the public.

Another topic on Shenango..............Younger guy told me he got fined for not having an approved license to drive a boat with a motor over 50 hp. Said you have to take a test online and get a paper. This guy was about 30 years old and driving a 125 HP outboard.
He said the fine was $ 200.00 bucks !!!! Said anyone under 45 years old must have this paper while driving a bigger HP boat.  First I have ever heard of this law !

Anymore info to this ?

You need a boating education certificate if you were born on or after Jan. 1, 1982, and will be operating a boat over 25 hp in PA.

Residents of other states who were born on or after Jan. 1, 1982, and operate on Pennsylvania waters for 60 days or less are exempt if they hold a boating safety certificate issued by their home state.

Beach has reopened;
Not unusual for the beach to be closed when heavy rains cause high turbidity and water depths above normal summer pool. In this case it is thought the reason for a slightly elevated ecoli count.

Clark boat launch gets closed as well from flooding.

Thanks for the all info John, that clears up the boating issue .

Hard for me to keep up with all the changes in fishing & hunting regulations anymore. Things never changed much for many years when growing up, now you need a lawyer to explain all the new changing laws every year !

Pretty soon the license regulation books with be thick as a bible with rules and advertising !

Brock you are certainly welcome.

Use to be ya needed a Pittsburgh lawyer to figure out the laws, but now days ya need, the whole dam law firm.

Shame the operator of the boat has to pay a fine. Zero tolerance sucks.

That kid must have been acting a fool to get pulled over. As many young boat operators as there are on that lake, he had to do something to stand out. Probably smart mouthed them too. Maybe he tried to swamp a kayaker or something. Like I said, something made him stand out from the crowd. I could be wrong tho.

I had a 86 Galaxy that was free, really rough shape.  I used to get pulled every other trip on that boat.  Once got pulled 3 times in one day.  This was on Lake Murray in SC.  When I got my nicer looking wellcraft they never bothered me.  It's not always your actions that get you pulled over and checked.

I'm fairly sure this guy wasn't doing anything real crazy . They (Water Patrol )  were set up under Rt. 18 pulling over and checking most boats as they came though the under pass. My son got stopped on his pontoon and was asked a few questions and a boat safety check given. This guy was sitting at the dock waiting to trailer his boat when I talked to him. He was having a bad day.....a 200.00 fine and his truck with the trailer on wouldn't start in the parking lot !

I'd say NY probably was the most checked fishing areas I fished. All good officers , respectful and actually gave information to help fishermen when checking licenses !

Yes Sir Captain, Shenango is still better than 3.5' above summer pool with Sluice gates 1-7 open at 2.5'.

Golden Run and Clark boat launches both closed due to high water.

Haven't heard if the beach is open or closed.

Newbies to Shenango should be aware "life jackets" are required to be worn by all persons on any boat under 16' as well as Yaks and Canoes.

Are they letting it out the dam end slowly? This would explain why the Beaver has remained at pretty much same height for a few days, about 12-15" higher than normal. It just wont go down.

The Conny is normal, maybe even "low"

Sluices 1-7 have been open to 2.5' but will be at 1.5' by noon today.

Shenango River level at Sharpsville is presently 5.3'.

I would think you should see the Beaver going down shortly.

WAIT...... WHat?😏

Re: Shenango Lake news 2017/07/06 12:25:20 (permalink)
haha!

I actually dont mind it at this height, the crappie are easier to find below NB dam and summer walleyes hit more often. You just have to know spots farther away from the dams. Channel Cats have been hitting lures too, I guess because water is so muddy? Downside is it is a little tougher to get your bait in front of a wiper or striper. I use waterdata website that monitors the gauge just above 10th St Dam in Beaver Falls, 5ft and 9-10 inches is what I'd consider normal. The gauge has been at 7 feet or so.

Conny has had good smallmouth fishing lately, at least on the end close to Rock Point.

I want to get up to Shenango soon, so I'll be monitoring this thread. Updates on conditions above and below dam are most welcome

thanks, I will use that number when we go up. My wife is going to take her vacation end of month and I plan on getting up there and probably  Pymatuming or Conneaut.

But I meant info more along the lines of what you ,chauncy, and other guys offered already. Lake is crazy high, what level sluices are open to, etc. I'm fortunate in my location I can hit some good places pretty quick but the Shenango River Lake is about an hour drive

Re: Shenango Lake news 2017/07/07 08:34:49 (permalink)
Well here's a bit of interesting news that should be noted by those partaking in camping activities at Shenango Campgrounds.

Beginning July 10 this year the campground will no longer be accepting cash or checks. Campers must use a credit or debit card.

I imagine this will be true at all state facilities, if not already, in the immediate future.

Now, in other news, the lake remains above normal pool and the NWS is standing by it's prediction that NW Penn's Woods could, might, maybe or, possibly see heavy rains today.

Stay tuned for further developments.

Update: Looking at the radar; about to cross into NW PA., some places are about to see the proverbial "cow and flat rock".

Hey heyyyy hey, Shenango is just a bit over summer pool with sluices 1-7 open at one foot each. Looks like all the big rain headed to the south east, in time to miss the water shed muup north of the lake.

Could we be seeing normal pool levels and clearer waters in the near future? Stay tuned.

In other news, it appears word has gotten out regarding the "no cash/check" policy, taking affect this coming Monday. So far the change, it seems, has created some unhappy campers.

Get it.... "unhappy camper"?😒

Till next time, tight lines.

Update: Clark boat launch is now open.

As reported less then 10 minutes of this writing Shenango remains .45 ft. above normal summer pool. (894.67). Sluices 2, 4 & 6 open to one foot. Air temp at 63 and water at 72.

As currently reported by the NWS; NW PA. is currently under a severe thunderstorm advisory with high wind and heavy rains possible. Flooding can be possible in areas where thunderstorms persist.

This weather report may be substantiated with a simple check of ones weather radar App.

Good Morning Shenango fans!!

Lake level remains at .53 ft above norm. sum. pool. which is only a scooch higher than yesterday at this time.

Will be cool if that is all the lake will raise from the rain over the past 24 hours.
