Took the climber for a walk this afternoon. Found a nice rubline with a few new scrapes so I picked a tree and gave it a shot. Unfortunately it ended up being me and one lonely fox squirrel for the entire afternoon.

Great story rsquared, I still have lots of popcorn so bring back plenty of pictures from Erie. Good luck.

Tried grunting every 20 to 30 minutes , nothing , heard noise turned around & looked down and my Cuz's dog was sitting there looking up at me 😜🍺... it was almost dark so called it a night.... had 3 bucks on my camera not legal , 1 spike , 2 little 4pts butting heads but at least it was daylight hours not middle of the night.... oh well tomorrow's a another day

This morning my dad Sat in the stand I shot my doe out of 2 weeks ago. Around 8:30 the same 7pt that I saw opening day came in. Was within 15yds, but once again never stopped to offer a shot. I sat from 3:30-6:30on another property. Glimpses of a small buck harassing a doe in a field edge 75yds out was the only action I saw tonight. Pretty warm out, and it looks to be even warmer this week. Won't be out again till Thursday or Friday.

Hunted Friday evening seen nothing heard some but never saw them hunted Saturday morning saw nothing then at 1030 I see some dude walking around I thought great I'm getting the **** out of here what's he doing? So I climbed down and confront him says hes tracking a deer his boy shot Friday evening by the other Rd like 2000+ yards or more away. So I proceeded to help him look for 2 hrs lost blood so I went home deer never bedded down so Idk what happened probably shot it in the leg dude didn't seem like he knew what he was doing he lost blood 3 times (I found it) had it not been for me he would of been looking the wrong way ....more coyote food I guess

I'd rather be lucky then good, but im to good to be lucky

Lots of scrapes and rubs popping up in my area. Haven't seen anything the last 2 mornings. Heard some grunting this morning but it never came out of the swamp. Sounded like a younger buck.

Kicked two out on my way in, they were under my tree. Ha a spike under me a little before eight. Nice morning. Late getting into the stand. Was going to hunt a different spot but half way to stand a guy was flashing his light at me from his tree. Huffed it back to the truck and went to alter. Spot closer to work. Wasn't climbing the tree until seven am. Oh well. At least I am out here...

Good luck fellas. Everyone I have talked to has seen bucks on their feet and saw some limited chasing from the young bucks.

Re: 2016 archery season 2016/10/31 10:10:22 (permalink)
Two huge doe walked right under my stand this morning. Barely enough light to see them plus they materialized from the fog just hovering over the field.

Watched as they diappeared just as quickly, moving through the windrow of cherry and oak trees separating the fields where my ladder stand sits secretely hidden.

Neighbor to my east called me earlier this week to let me know one of our hunting grounds has been heavily marked for logging. Saturday he called to say heavy equipment has arrived and this morning I await to hear 2 cycle motors running in yonder distance.

Logging will be taking place about a quater a mile to my ESE covering about 30 acres and boardered by a crick and beaver ponds.

Might this drive more deer to my little piece of Penn's Woods.

Stay tuned..... in the meanwhile, coffee time.

Happy Holloween 👻

Middle of the day deer movement here. Just had a 4 point with about a 20 inch spread go through. Would of gave him an arrow just because he's so unique looking!

Re: 2016 archery season 2016/10/31 21:20:46 (permalink)
Bit of excitement for me this evening as I sat snug as a bug in my ground blind. Got to watch a buck running balls to the ground then, jumping brush piles in my neighbors pasture before he jumped the fence an made a dead run straight at me for 250 yds. Xbow was sitting on my shooting stick with my cheek againt the stock as I followed the elusive White Tail into the woods 20 yds to my west. Holding my breath and wishful thinking the deer stopped just beyond my twenty yard marker. Safety off, cross hair of Xbow scope just behind the shoulder, finger on the trigger and, I wonder why this buck, scrub rack at best but legal, might be running so hard. Might there be a bigger buck coming along?

One of these days I'm gonna learn to not let another buck go by. But at least, tomorrow is another day and I'm having fun!

Not too much rutting activity where I'm at in Ohio. Cameras on 2 properties still only bucks at night.. Working here, house I am renting has a 60 acre wood lot with 2 150-170 inch bucks. Will only have 1 or 2 chances to hunt them, if I chase them out not sure if they will be back. Next batch of woods is a long ways out.

No Bullwinkle, pick-up truck, neighbor is working on his fence and must of been at the north side last night when he kicked the buck out. This afternoon he was on the south side which boarders my field. Pretty sure that activity might have a bearing on seeing deer sooooo I backed up an regrouped. Nixed the ground blind and went to my first ladder stand at the corner of the now bare bean field to my south.

All was not a loss, skeeters enjoyed their meal and I did see two deer of which one seemed fascinated watching me climb down my ladder just before dark.

Didn't make it out this morning as the better half found delight in providing me with a honey get-r-done list. But that's OK because tomorrow is another day and I am having a blast.

Good luck to all yinz all.

You 2.. Purchased a couple Moultrie Modems for my cameras, figured I would go out around lunch to set them up.. This being a good time not to disturb much, of course I jump a nice 8 point on edge of field, 1st buck I've seen in daylight, go figure..of course no pics in 2 days except Fox Squirrels the size of my German Shorthair..

Had deer going bonkers this AM.  Crashing, brush busting, sticks cracking, grunting.....that one was the first group.  The next group had everything the first did except the grunting but they were all on the same path.  Only problem was, the first group came through at 6:45 am and the second at 6:55 am.  Pitch black and couldn't see a thing.  Nothing but squirrels, chippies and birds once it got light out.  Stayed in stand until a little after 10:00 am. Going to go this afternoon but will be dressing lightly....maybe I'll get lucky just before dark.
Friday should be good after the front goes through tomorrow.

Bob pictures of your pointer would be fine but then again I am a bit partial to German Shorthaired Pointers.

Mopars it's a must to stay in your tree until 10:15 if you want to see that big guy you have pictures of. But take a BIG lunch that's PM. LOL

I'm hearing loads of grunting, growling and, crashing going on. Loggers have moved in a 1/4 mi. to my East taking out a bunch of trees.

So, the bean field to my South has been cleared, the woods to my East is being cleared and my neighbor to my North is clearing his fence.

Could it be any clearer; I am having a ball!

My last 3 sits I saw one deer. Shooter buck at 50 yards. Most of season have been seeing deer every night.

Don't give up just yet. The week before the rut can be a tough time. If they aren't chasing yet can be real tough.. It will explode the last week and all will be good in the deer woods..

My youngest Pointer was just fussing in the kennel and when I looked out the window there was a four point buck standing in the yard ten feet from the kennel having a stare down with her.

Re: 2016 archery season 2016/11/05 12:17:39 (permalink)
So, have yinz missed me since my last rant?  Well I am back to tell yinz about the great time I've been having!

Looked out my front window early Tuesday morning and seeing such a gorgeous day about to blossom I thought I would head to my tree stand at center field.

Figured the neighbor wouldn't be working the fence to my north til afternoon and I might get a view of a elusive PA. White Tail heading to or from the pasture.    Quickly dawned my make-up, dressed in my look-like-a-tree camouflage attire and beat feet out the door.

Just in time to see a Dutchman high stepping through the pasture on his way, I'm supposing to set-up or, to check his trap line at the swamp.

Well I figured there's always tomorrow or the next day, but I can pretty much write off the the field and pucker brush to my north if the area is now being trapped.

Wednesday, still sulking from the day before, I finally convince myself it might be to my advantage to get out bright and early in the afternoon but this time, sit in my tree stand overlooking the now cleared bean field to my south.  Hoping enough time has passed and the deer have since returned to that area since the combine worked the field.  Even gave it some wishful thinking that the Dutchman might even chase one or two elusive PA. White Tail from the pucker brush to my north and they to would join the others in the now cleared bean field to my south.

Quickly applied my make-up, dressed in my look-like-a-tree apparel and out the door, off the steps toward the bean field and wham there before me a huge deer, broadside!

Stupid winter wheat!!!!   OK, so there is tomorrow and still plenty of time.  Except this time, I ain't going hunting tomorrow and hunting I did not go!  Had to finish-up on that get-r-done list which I got away from because, I told the better half I needed a metric Cresent Wrench to work on one of the items.  Damed if she didn't find one at Home Depot!

Of course I kept in mind, while looking at the metric measurements stamped in the side of my new wrench, tomorrow is another day and there certainly remains plenty of time.

Let me make this perfectly clear, the next morning (yesterday) I AM in my ground blind before sun-up but to get there in time I chose not to wear my make-up or my look-like-a-tree garmits.  I say perfectly clear because when the sun came out, so did the fog!!

Well the fog did burn off, I think by 10:00 AM or so which was worth waiting for, I guess I could say, because I was treated to a show of gray and fox squirrels romping through the area.  Scurrying here and there, running round the ground blind then scampering away.  Gotta say it was entertaining, until one Gray decided to try it's skill at climbing the blind and ended up right in the window.  Talk about lucky, when that squirrel saw me sitting there it spun around and flew to a nearby tree where it shook it's tail and scolded me for 5 minutes.  Can you imagine what would have happened had I taken time to apply my make-up and dress in my look-like-a tree apparel?   I needed a change of panties as it was.

Then this morning I see the good news from some yinz comments as it seems, everyone has lost sight of the elusive PA. White Tail and seeing little in the way of the rut.  After reading that information I can at least once again, look toward tomorrow which of course, just screwed-up the plans I made to start fishing.  Thank-yinz very much!!

Good luck to all and watch out for those elusive PA. squirrels..

PS. NO I am NOT in the PA. Wilds this morning...... there's always Monday.

Re: 2016 archery season 2016/11/06 05:36:17 (permalink)
Congrats on the doe outasync. I'm still out looking for the antlerd ones too. Sat yesterday morning for a few hours and saw nothing. As I snuck out of the woods I almost stepped on a young doe that waited until I was about 15 ft away then decided to shoot up and hightail it out of there.

Decided I'd make it a long afternoon sit and got into another stand around 1. Let out a few soft grunts at 2:30 and shortly after could hear movement headed my way. All of a sudden about 35 yds out across a shallow ravine through the thick understory I can see a small oak tree being absolutely thrashed. Blood pumping with anticipation I waited for him to close the gap into a small opening 25 yds away. Then....the swirling winds that were at my stand yesterday decided to do me no favors and started blowing a straight line from me to him. Shortly after I caught a few glimpses if him sauntering away in the direction he came from. Tried to get him to turn with a few more grunts but no luck. Saw nothing but squirrels the rest of the afternoon. Oh well, back at it next week.
