About 4:30 PM I heard three rips from a high power very close to my back yard. I guess it was a youth doe hunting.

Little breezy in my stand right now. Hope it calms down a little for prime time. Kicked one out on my way in (ufo) but nothing seen yet from the stand. Just nice to be back in the stand. Getting a little chilly too. Guess I should have brought my jacket.

Sat. I noticed a e-clip retainner missing and the cam axle was out about 1/32 inch on my crossbow. Sure happy I didn't have a deer come into range and present a shot. The axle also passes through a cable mount and I'm certain something would have gone ka-boing or ker-thunk if I pulled the trigger.

Had to use the cocking rope to let the bow down.

Didn't make it out today, installed a new fiber optic sight (with light) on my trusty Bear Compound then spent time shooting the crap out of my bags and 3Ds, waiting for the sun to set so I could play with the light. 🎃

Real nice morning in the stand.  Had 34 F when I pulled into my parking spot.
Action didn't start until 8:15 am but ended up hearing grunting, saw some chasing and saw 10 deer in total.  Two separate little 1.5 yr olds (one was a 3 pt and one was a spike) and the rest were does and fawns.  The 3 pt. was harassing the doe and her fawn.  I don't think she was ready he was just being overzealous.  Saw them twice so only saw 7 separate deer for sure.

Darn ticks are everything but warms my heart seeing them curling up and falling off my pant legs.  Thank you kindly Sawyers!

Messed up on this guy last night. Grunted him in but he came in behind me and I couldn't see him. Went to turn around in my stand and he was standing broad side at 25 yards....Saw the movement and game over...

Hey Bing, there is a good point about your picture.   Now I don't feel so bad. lol

Ya gotta hate em when they 'neak-up on ya  especially after sitting in a tree for a couple of hours in the wind at 42 degrees F.

Stupid deer.........

                                                         15 yds.
Could hit him with my cell phone.

Turned out to be a button buck with some good sized buttons.  Maybe live to play another day.

Good luck with that Buck ya called in Bings, that in itself is exciting.

Mopars, hope you enjoyed the races and had a good time bud, how about some good hunting stories along with some racing stories.

[/URL]. BTDT .... this was on my camera this afternoon was Sat. night at 1:45 AM ... so he is still there had a spike & small 6 pt also a few doe also. No new scrapes , things still kinda slow. Cleaned out some branches around both my stands and ready to go again. Have to see how weather is though. Should be prime time soon... good luck to all... now my race trip was awesome , truck race & Cup race ... Stayed in Atlanta , then got bused to Talladega ( Prime Sports) package deal only way to go.... Atlanta traffic is crazy, Hotel was about 1 mile from Atlanta Falcons stadium , they played at home Sunday went into OT. That me just say thousands of Football & thousands of Nascar fans in same town at same time == one big traffic jam 😜

Good advice on the strap, found something has been gnarling on a seat in the stand I used yesterday.

Mopars that would be a wild vacation buddy, happy to hear you had a really good time. Now top it off by sticking that awesome buck.

Crappie I'm thinking Friday just might be your lucky day. I got the popcorn ready and waiting to see a good picture show.

By golly I fooled Ole Mr Elusive Whitetail today.

I didn't go out.

Weather dude says rain tomorrow so I'm thinking' I'll fool em again.

Snuck in and checked the camera last night after work. Decent 7pt with only one brow, few small bucks, and a doe with fawn still in tow. Starting to move earlier in the evening. Counted 5 new scrapes on the 30 yds worth of path I walked. Can't wait to get out tomorrow. Good luck everyone.

Also have a question for those more knowledgeable than me. Only been archery hunting a few short years and have never done much calling. Got a grunt call and bleat can that I plan on putting some effort into this weekend. My dilemma is that the property I plan on hunting borders I79 which makes for a lot of noise. Would it be a waste of time blind calling with all of the extra noise from the highway? Maybe try some rattlers instead?

Re: 2016 archery season 2016/10/27 09:19:18 (permalink)
Crappie, remember that deer have a much better sense of hearing than we do and will pick up on it a lot easier than we can. I have never had much luck blind calling. Only have grunted in bucks I've heard or seen first and then again I never have put much effort into it. Rattling has worked the best for me but some years seem better than others.

The area I'm primarily hunting this year has an abundance of small 1 to 1.5 year old bucks. Between the 3 of us we have counted 8 different small guys and at least 17 different doe. 11 of which are also in the 1.5 or younger age group. Hopefully some of the big boys start passing through with the rut heating up!

Iv grunted bucks in from start to finish of archery Season I'll grunt every 30min or so this time of year . Iv rattled in lots of bucks to never a shooter yet tho (wall hanger) but it does work good , I know people that year after year shoot mature deer they rattle in just be sure you are certain no deer is heading your way before your next calling session hence 20-40min interval's

I'd rather be lucky then good, but im to good to be lucky

Also make sure you have a place within quick reach to put your rattle bag/ antlers or call if one comes in hot. Nothing like having a shooter at 10 yards and your stuck holding your antlers!

Can't go wrong hitting the call every half hour to 45 minutes. Till the last week of season my grunt tube is set for a smaller buck. You set it too deep and sound like a bigboy you might scare of the smaller buck.
But as stated when you hit that call be aware and prepared.
Sometimes they will come in hot and fast if they are close.

My luck with grunting has been limited.  Fawns love the doe in heat bleat, especially the ones that lost momma due to a buck running with her.  My best call on better bucks has been a snort wheeze and I only do it with my mouth. Doesn't work all the time but definitely gets their attention and gets them to stop.  It will make a smaller buck high tail it out of the county, though.

I don't have rattles or other calls but listening to what you guys are saying; by the time I walk to my stand, climb my ladder, organize my bow, quiver and myself inturn creating natural grunts, groans, moans, wheezing, and a bleat or two... I should be surrounded by deer?👻

Today I chose not to hunt as my wife said we were going to look at Siamese Cats. Probably could have sat in my blind this afternoon had the better half not heard me mumbling ..... stupid cats. 🎃

Allllll heck, Turkey comes in tomorrow, how time flys when one is having fun!!

Back to looking like a stupid orange head while moving about field and forest. Good grief.

I have a legit question; how come I have to look like a neon orange candle moving through the woods when I carry a bow BUT, do not with fishing pole in hand headed toward a fishing hole? Tain't fair I tell yinz, just tain't fair.

Dang I got it......💡 I'll put me one of them fishing reel thingy's on my bow. Heck then I can follow the string to track my kill... err, harvest !! Yea, yea I know; like that's ever gonna happen...Stupid deer!🎃

Ps. Crappie that is great shot using your camera. Best of luck tomorrow using your bow.

You also don't have to wear orange if you're hunting waterfowl or doves either. Even when walking to and from your spot, or walking through fields, swamps or along water to jump shoot.

I don't really get it either for archers.

I do kind of get it for turkey hunters in theory, more for the safety of those sitting and calling. I've been "stalked" a few times in the fall when I've busted up a flock and sat down to call. But of course the jackwagons who do that kind of thing aren't wearing orange when they're sneaking up on you.

Oh geeze, forgot to add a report.

Only got out once this week with my son - Wednesday evening.

We've had some good hunts on one field edge on this small property, and have seen plenty of deer.  We decided to sit another edge where we don't see as many deer overall but have seen some great bucks at this time of year for a couple of years in a row.  Saw a very skittish doe and skipper.  They didn't see or wind us, so I don't know what had 'em spooked.

Shoulda picked the other field we've been sitting on.  As we walked back to the car and looked into it, there were deer everywhere.

Heading mup Erie tonight for some steelhead with my sons, so we'll be back at it next week.
