presque isle bay

Hit the bay again today, started at Sommerheim, read the sign which stated “opened during day light hours”, most locals know this, drove down the hill right to the waters edge and parked along side the other 15 cars. Several anglers pulling off when I got down there all saying the bite was slow but the ice was good and hard and about 3 ½-4 inches thick so decided to try else where. Went to Misery there was 27 ice huts out there when I arrived, talked to a couple  more anglers pulling off, the report was the same, the bite was slow.  Moved down the way checking horse shoe pond, parking lot was full, counted about 20 ice huts, talked to an angler pulling off he had 25 gills in a bucket and had a couple bigger fish snap him off, he said he did much better yesterday. Doubled back put in off of Leo’s (between stink hole and 3rd parking lot) made the long drag to the middle fished about 12 ft of water, first couple minutes landed a couple 11 inch perch and thought things were fine, but what started out good ended up slow, pick, pick, pick. It seems that the bite is off, but that is always subject to change. I’ll post some pictures under general ice fishing. Side note, checked the ice out at Lake Pleasant, not so good, one good hit with the spud you’re there, don’t go deep, no need for a power auger, but a good rock will do, in other words wait for the ice.

    Dan,
It's the dirt road just before stink hole, has a little wooden bird watchers platform on the left side. Leo use to rent boats off that point back when.

Fished off of Sommerheim yesterday.  Worked our way toeard the yacht club and fished 6-12fow.  Couldn't find any perch to speak of.  Caught lots of gills on waxies in about 6 fow.  Some of them were pushing 9".  Ice was decent 5-6".w_w.

If it has fins and gills, I'm there.

And just what makes you believe that, young fella ?  6" ice isn't going to melt in a few days. Especially with the cold nights that follow those days.

has anyone fished the deeper parts of the bay for perch yet ? was wondering how the ice was out there and if anyone did any good. The rain they are calling for should not hurt the ice to much. If anyting it should melt off the snow and with night temps getting cold it will make it soild.....
I fished off sommerheim yesterday afternoon, 8ft of water, not much happing...........

Yea we fished 6' to 14' of water in the head of the bay yesterday to, we went off 3rd parking lot , not to much action on the perch saw quite a few small gills caught in the 6' water. Talked to 1 guy who tried out of Chestnut launch he said it was slow also & the ice was only about 3" or so what ever that means. Maybe by this weekend. Good Luck be safe    By the way I didn't mention I didn't see any ice much over 4" any where on the bay & that was actually measured.

fished the bay both sunday and monday, ice thickness varied from 3.5-4.5...did alot better monday from sun up til 11am..bite was steady, used mostly minnows, but got a few on grubs..lets just say, lots are getting the perch, they just arent talking...theres no doubt using the cabelas underwater camera caught us lots more fish..after fishing the deep water over the years, ive learned, that aint the answer..
will see you all this weekend if ice holds up

gman Very possible you did better on Monday than Sunday (what every better is), yep perch are being caught at the right time on the right day in the right place no doubt about it that's normal fishing but Tuesday seamed pretty slow for most that I talked to. I guess pretty slow is vague also slow could be only 1 keeper out of 20 caught it could be not getting a limit what ever. But glad you did better Monday. By the way Sunday was better than Tuesday for me.

Hard to tell, but looks like the ice by EYC has broken up and been shoved east from the high winds last night? Can anyone confirm this?

The weather doesn't look good either ... not sure the main Bay will be safe again this season....maybe some of the inland lake's ice made it through the rain, wind and warm temps?

Anyone check Eaton? Edinboro? This weeks weather may have melted all the snow off the ice and may end up helping the ice get thicker there? I know it stays colder than PI out at those lakes.

Started at misery bay early this morning along with 20 other anglers, the bite was slow picked up and slid by horse shoe pond a couple anglers coming off and about 15 or so heading on, the same report the bite was slow. checked the ice out of marina lake punched a couple holes fished for 1 hr. action slow. The ice was good and hard the best since it froze up. NO ice to speak of from the head to the channel at the marina, the high water and winds pushed all the ice east, all that is left in the head is skim ice from the last 2 nights.

    Chauncy,
No ice from the first parking lot to the west pier at the marina, We had a storm surge of four and a half feet! the water cam up 4-1/2ft between 6:00 to 8:00 am Yesterday the 50 mile a hour winds did the rest. The ice in the back bay's is holding and is good. Fished Marina lake today some pressure cracks. We did spud out off the West pier, out in to the bay the ice is good were the wind did not get to it.
