I saw a big convoy of utility trucks heading west on RT 84 yesterday morning, thirty trucks or more near Fishkill NY.

Re:Weather thread 2018/09/13 09:05:10 (permalink)
While it's not 'rocket science' it is a complex system of "mutual aid" as utility company's from one state will move in to fill vacancies created when another state responds to assist those in need in other parts of the country.  All the man power and equipment now in route isn't put in motion at the drop of a hat.  Hours and hours of pre-planning along with updating and practice are in place to alleviate delays in getting emergency crews on the road, with just the snap of a finger.

Then when it's all over, critique sessions will be conducted addressing problems that need corrected and discuss new ideas, that will better response.

Some utility company's will send manpower while other utility company's send specialized equipment and/or materials.  This may include engineers who will 'restructure' areas of damage in order that repairs are made preventing future damage.  The affected utility may even have targeted areas pre-planned for such re-do's, in the advent of a disaster, thereby preventing such damage from re-occurring.

Rather amazing what goes on behind the scenes and yet at times, it looks as though 'nobody is doing anything'.

Mutual-aid is nothing new, Vol. Fire Companies have been using it since Ben Franklin's Bucket Brigade.  It just took time for others to catch on.

Umm, as for mutual aid and the bucket brigades, all seemed well until 1751 when Franklin devised "insurance companies" and "Fire Marks".  But that's another story for another time.

BTDT- I used to be one of the lead instructors at the police academy for Critical Incident Management.  One of the basic tenets for  first responder's in an emergency situation is to not become part of the problem.  As for the general public, I can't begin to tell you how many times people willfully ignored road block devices on the parkway system patrolled by my agency.  Most of the major parkways in Westchester County, NY are within the floodplain of a river.  The Saw Mill River Parkway, Bronx River Parkway and the Hutchinson River Parkway go under during heavy rain storms yet it doesn't deter people from driving around the barricades.  I've even witnessed motorists turned around and travel against the flow of traffic on a controlled access parkway when faced with a road closure.  More than ever common sense is lacking in a large segment of our population and no sign of that changing for the better is evident.

Bout 45 years ago as a young patrolman got a call of a burglar alarm at a Liquor store late on New Years eve.
As luck would have it was right at the place as the call came in and two guys ran away.
Grabbed the first one real quick and had him in the cruiser while wondering where the heck #2 had disappeared to.
Ahhh -  a loud screaming came from the ally alongside the store.
There he was bout halfway through stuck with his feet well off of the ground.
Musta started hopping sideways.
Ya see this particular alley is around 3 feet wide where he went in and narrows down to about 8 inches at the far end.
A long time and lots of laughs getting him out.
Idiot.

Troutbum I hear you and know exactly what you're saying.

It saddens me when I see or hear of stories involving firefighters, police officers, and medics getting injured or killed, while in the line of duty. But the real bummer is when the responders become the victim because some moron citizen, thought themselves as invincible. Just as disheartening, the doorknobs and their Burbots that sue public servants for, not responding fast enough or, failing in some otherway.

BTW... did I mention thank you for your service?

I'm just a local yokel that turns off the news and figure I can't change the weather so deal with it as it comes
At times I will use this local forecast on my phone . My dumb phone shows no precipitation until Monday.
Hopefully holds true as many outdoors projects can get accomplished Sat and Sun.

If she does what most of them do she will make a west turn, then head north to rain on us by mid week, hopefully she will be rid of the heavy moisture by then.

Our forecasters are predicting she'll blow through Rochester on Tuesday.  No Moose River Plains trip this year, even though fishing is good in the rain, setting up and breaking camp and being in the rain for the whole time doesn't cut it.

Friends in Pulaksi say the Jersey plates and PA plates are sprouting like weeds in a bare ground field.  Circus time in the north country!  I'm hoping to get up with my wife to look at the trees week after next, but we'll likely only watch one or two rings around trestle, she has never been comfortable with big fish since she got spooled on the Summerville pier (quite) a few years back!

The latest Hurricane Florence spaghetti models map on Thursday showed the potential path the storm may take in the coming days. The model showed the storm could veer north after making landfall later this week.
The new spaghetti model showed Florence landing on North and South Carolina before continuing northwest into Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky before heading into West Virginia. The storm was expected to make landfall in the Carolinas Thursday night or Friday morning. The National Weather Center forecast showed the storm was poised to hit the coast at around 2 a.m.EDT on Friday. ~ BY JULIANA ROSE PIGNATARO ON 9/13/18 AT 9:31 AM

Weather forecast dude telling me to expect Florence between the hours of 11:00AM & 11:00PM. No warnings or watches for my area of the Pennsylvania Wilds but some areas in the central part of the Keystone, may, maybe, might see 2 to 4" an hour.

Be safe all yinz all.

Florence now in the history books, at least, for my area of the Pennsylvania Wilds. Mostly light rain showers through the day with the rain ending and sun popping out just before sunset, lending to some terrific light shows.

Be safe.

The May tornado did its most damage just South of me. Am still hearing saws and chippers from time to time bout a half mile away.
Took a ride over there this AM and was surprised to see many houses still have blue tarps on them as well as crushed garages and car ports and roof lines.
Most front yard and utility damage is cleared but many still have hangers and down trees in the backyards.
Some heavy equipment here and there in backyards where big stuff still is.
Still a quantum leap from what it looked like a few months ago.
I got real lucky being just on the edge of it with only a number of hangers in my trees- those cleared with a short crane and pro help.
Still tarps and down trees here and there pretty much all around the general area aside from that particular neighbor hood -some folks took a big hit.

Wouldn't be surprised the blue tarps are results of insurance delays or lack of.

Heavy fog shrouded my little piece of Penn's woods this morning.

Out and about before sunrise, taking the bumpus hounds out for morning potty call then their breakfast. Fog was so heavy it felt like a light mist falling. Finally beginning to dissipate as the sun works it way through.

According to this weeks forecast I can expect relief from the heat and humidity making the task of grass control, a bit easier.

While I'm not one to spread rumors 😇 I thought it important to mention yinz may want to keep an eye to the sky tomorrow at 9:54 PM (Sept. 22) cause skuttlebut has it, something called an Equinox starts to FALL.

In other news, speaking of sky, lots of pink at daybreak the morning and rumor has it, "... pink sky's in the morning, sailors warning". So if yinz will excuse me, I gotta "batten down the hatches".

But wait!!! Weather dude forecasting a dandy of a weekend for my area of Penn's Woods. How gooder is that??

Thoughts and prayers to those recovering from Florence.

I hate to do it to Pafisher, but my wife and I are planning a short trip to the Tug Hill this week.  There is a 50% chance of rain Tuesday and Wednesday up there, and if we go, Murphy says put your money on the wetness.  If we find out that none of the trees have changed and we can use the facility where we stay in early October, we may postpone, but the hunters will soon be out in force (it still seems a little warm to be sitting in a tree with a bow, even if it does open up north next week), so it may have to be the week coming.  So if you see an old timer couple without boots up on the wall next week, it'll be us having a few short grins and giggles, if there is any room at all.  Or we'll just spend a little time watching the circus off the RT 52 Bridge, and walk around the hatchery.

I could of done without the rain or at least had it hold off for a couple days. Had some excavation to widen my driveway/parking area. Removing dirt went better then expected with as wet as the ground was from downpours the day before.

However the downpours arriving, just a hour before the "white rock" base material, created a wonderful pond leading to a gooey clay mess to work in.

Driver feared tailgating, even backing into the area, so it was dump the rock and push it around with my trusty 3 point back blade.

Oh well... Shouldn't be long and my neck will relax, allowing me to once again, look forward.
