Glad to find some like minded folks here who can still appreciate the satisfaction of doing for ourselves just a bit in this 'fast food world'.

Maybe we should have a 'homesteading' forum to compare notes, lol

Fichy, you are very welcome and I do enjoy keeping up with what you folks in the beautiful state of NY are up to, so glad I can give back just a little for all I have learned from you fellows over the years. 😊

BTDT... I would be happy to pick up the tab, lol

HT, your wife is a lucky lady!

And great looking stash there, Clint...a satisfying feeling to see the shelves full, isn't it?

I also do cows and pigs and of course fish.  we only by chicken and turkey from the store.   I would guess over half veggies  I eat I produced.

Clint that is sweet and I'm about a 1/4 of what you got going. I remember my grandparents were probably 3 times but they were in a different time period and had to make time or go hungry. I'm looking to get where your at next year. Good job.

On another forum we share gardening and cooking ideas. It's super fun and learning.
I don't do fast food much at all, as in the big arches places. We cook & prepare our meals pretty much 7 days a week and rarely do a restaurant.

When I was young we had chickens. I'm not sure I'm ready for that again. For eating, I'm not a chicken guy but I love fresh eggs. We buy most all our meat until I produce some venison. Something that always crosses my mind is just to split a cow and pig with my son. Maybe next year.
Is there a best time to purchase ?

Still raining and I'm still cleaning.

We like to do cows in Nov/Dec. They are usually still outside picking or just in.  The more hay they eat the more they taste like hay. Although pig can almost be done anytime we have ours set so they go when its cool too. Like May and November.  That's the kicker to pigs take 6 to 8 months to raise. Cows take 2 years minimum often 3 so there is much more work invested in beef.

North sandy is approaching 6k and rose 7 feet over night... still inches more of rain to come. North branch salmon is approaching 4k... let's hope their 2k release yesterday is enough to suffice. Something tells me they're gonna have to dump 6k like.... now

Re:Weather thread 2017/10/30 08:55:10 (permalink)
Today was one of the hardest and worst things I've experienced in my life.
We held our beloved black lab , Toby , in our arms while he passed away at 2am this morning.
I have never before felt such grief for an animal before , because he was not just pet, he was a member of our family.
We noticed he became ill Saturday and hoped it was just a virus. By yesterday afternoon we knew it was something more and hoped he would make it through the night to take him to a vet so that he and we wouldn't suffer. By 10pm it was obvious that was not going to happen so we just held and tried to comfort him.
At 2am he put his nose against my legs while my wife hugged him tightly and he passed in our arms.
Today I will proceed to put him in his favorite resting place in our yard where he will always remain with us forever.
It is with many tears that I write this and never hope others have to experience such pain .
We love you dearly, my buddy, Toby ..

I am so sorry HT,  the loss of such a cherished family member is one of our greatest sadnesses, I am glad you and your wife were able to be with him and I hold faith that at some point, in some way, we will all get to enjoy the company of our beloved animals again.

Condolences HT.

Never easy to lose a pet of any type, not easy to hear of such loss, even by people who I have never met. But from your post, I can tell, Toby had a loving family and good home. Toby knew it was time to go.

Pafisher, I've never found a new pet that could replace the one before them. However, somewhere there is a pet that would like to try, and needs a friend.

Thank you folks so much. Toby is now at peace. I only hope time heals because the tears just won't stop.
As you said Jack, I don't think I could do this again. He was the best friend I could ever have wished for.
Honestly the weather was perfect to his liking today.

Sorry for your loss RJ. When I lost my lab I laid in the grave, not able to get up,  for 1/2 an hour. My Mom's little dog just went 2 days ago, it was her companion for 17 years, now she's going, too. Life is hard sometimes.

A lot warmer (51) and windy this morning.
I'm swaying in the tree and almost time to get down. No rain yet, saying about noon.
The deer are definitely in rut. Seen 4 bucks yesterday and 1 this morning. All on a doe.

On a side note, 4 weeks ago I got bit by a tick. All was fine until I woke up thurs to giant red spot and it was real sore.
Started meds on Friday but it is spreading, about a foot and half area now and hurts like heck.
Becarefull out there , this is nasty and painful.

Nice work, HT.  Several companies make sprays for your clothing that uses permethrin. Works freakin' great to keep ticks off.  Lasts 6 or more washings. Does 4 sets of clothes (pants, shirt, socks ) for 16 bucks. I use Sawyer brand, available at****s. Fish USA doesn't seem to have it, I looked.
