I had a boot open up in my motor well this year during the walleye tourney last month.  I came in full of water with a bilge that sucked in debris and would not pump.  We had life jackets on standby and got her on the trailer just quick enough.  Always have to pay attention...

When I worked for a boat dealership, we had a customer come in and he was just irrate.  It seems that he nearly sunk his boat because the plug was not in.  The dealership had winterized and stored his boat and it was the maiden voyage for the year.  His complaint was that when the dealership winterized his boat that we had removed the plug.  This was true.  I pulled up his records and he had requested that we remove the plug because the year before he complained that after winterization we had left the plug in and some water had collected in the bilge over the winter.  So it was a case of we were darned if we did and darned if we didn't.

By the way, the plug was zip tied to the steering wheel with a large orange tag that read "Is your plug in?" so that it would be readily apparent to any operator of the boat that it had been removed.

And MN just passed a law that states you must remove the plug from your boat and open up any valves to live wells, etc. to drain all water out and they must remaine open/removed while transporting your boat on MN roadways.  It applies even if you are just traveling through the state.  I wonder how many of these incidents they are going to have in MN in the future?

If only the boat operator at Walnut had been paying closer attention and was able to get the motor started and was able to make some headway, the venturi effect would have cleaned out the water for him and he could have saved the vessel.
I guess the bilge pump failed or was really small to not be able to keep up with the plug being out.  Dual 2000 gph's, one fore and one aft should be a minimum on big water, closed floor boats.

That is the FIRST thing I do EVERYTIME I prep the boat for launch, and I don't let anyone else do it. If you don't get a sequence for launch prep, you will forget something sooner or later...

I keep a plug in the motor well, one in the glove box in my truck, and one in the storage under the drivers seat on the boat.  I always use the one in the motor well, but if I launch and put my stuff in the truck glove box when I park the trailer, I see that plug as a reminder.  That sparks the question...  "is the plug in?"  If the one in the well comes up missing, I have one under the seat on the boat.

There's one chained in the bilge, one in a storage box and one in the splash well. I've only had to use the one in the bilge once....the first year I had this boat.

I bought a "bucket-o-plugs" at Kmart one time. They had a sign on the bucket that said "Clearance $1". So I took the bucket to the check out and asked the obvious question, "was that $1 per plug or $1 for the bucket" even though I knew it had to be $1 per plug since they were $2.69 each a week before. Well, I bought a bucket of 100 plugs for $1 . Shortly after I upgraded to a boat with a garboard plug, but they came in handy as a gift for my dad after he forgot to put his plug in one day .

Like Bpg... we have stickers that say 'Is the plug in?' .... one on the bow near the connector for the winch line so the person unhooking from the trailer has to look right at it....and one on the dash...
hard to believe how easy it is to miss such a simple step, but I think it has happened to all of us, and if it hasn't happened to you yet, your turn is probably coming!  and yes, we also carry spares!
But as Eyes said... wonder what happened that the bilge pump didn't work to at least for a while and give them a chance to run back in? oh, well, I guess we just have to use it as a learning experience that luckily didn't cost a life!

I talked with "Chubby" at the launch on Saturday, he said he was first on scene and said the guys had no idea what happened, they hadn't hit anything that they knew of. They motored out, dropped anchor and things went south from there. Boat went down fast. Just glad that there were guys close enough to help and that nobody was seriously hurt.

unless they had an automatic bilge it sounds like it took on too much water...since "the guys had no idea what happened".

losing an entire rig, fishing equip, and the entire episode occuring because of a plug being left...WOWWWWWWWWWW!!!
