Fishing for Staging Steelies in Sept

I am thinking about fishing for the staging steelhead before they enter the tribs in Erie this fall.  I have a 17 foot boat and am thinking about fishing off of the mouths and chucking spoons and even floating some bait at them.

Has anyone ever done this?  I am new to this type of fishing and am wondering when the best tiime of year to do it is (I am thinking mid sept) and how far out do you have to go?  I am thinking not far out.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Go 100 yards out , drift(helps to have very little wind and waves) start chucking hardware all around you, and have fun.

Although if rains open the mouths up early then you dont need the boat nor will you need waders. Shore fish em. They patrol the shore line back and forth within 3 yards from shore.

What's really un is when you see guys wading out about 40-50 feet to try to cast out further and then the fish are swimming behind them.

    Been there done that.

Funny as chit when you cast out there almost hitting those guys in the **** wading way out there and as they turn around you yell fish on guys. Watch your feet.

I pulled 3 that way right to the side of a guy standing next to the chute in the lake. Man did he get ****ed when I yelled to him and asked where my float went. You shoulda seen the look on the guys face when I set the hook and the fish came up right next to him.

Krocodile spoons in the 2" range, silver with silver, blue, and green prism stickers. Flour. yellow and orange also good. Brightly colored Mepps and Vibrax spinners, 2 1/4 inch Flatfish lures (add a split shot and you can get it out plenty), and if you find a huge group of fish don't discount a natural colored minnow or jerk bait. If it chops or murks up, put on a float and some skein and keep an eye on that float. Just about 2 months away.

Do you guys use any split shots when chucking out your spoons?  Or is the weight of the spoon enough?

Thanks for all of your information.  I appreciate it

The spoon is enough, if you use a noodle rod you can lighten you line up some and cast even a smaller spoon pretty far. No shots needed. The cleos, KOs and Krocs are plenty heavy.

I have 6lb. seagar flouro. on my noodle rod for the type of fishing your going to do.

and no you dont need a noodle rod , just use what you have , I feel the noodle rod gives me enough flex and playing ablility to use lighter line. So therefore if you use a shorter rod and stiffer rod you might want to go to 8 or 10 lb line to compensate. JMO.

dont count out big floating or countdown Rapalas either, I crush them on those out on the main lake.  They work great in the streams too but once the steel get stacked up you cant really use one because of snagging them.  But before they come in there awesome!

Here is a question for some of you guys. What flies do you use for the staging steelies? I have had some success with clousers and gray ghosts but would like to know what flies you have success with. Looking to do more fly fishing for them in the lake this fall.

Rods don't catch fish....fisherman do. I've been fishin alot of years, and the most important thing I have taken from the knowledge of the fisherie duuds about steelhead  is......drumrolll please......

    A) Rod, reel, and bait mean nothing....presentation is everything.

    B) Fish with confidence

I can trick/catch/land a steelie on a dora pole....on any piece of crap I throw at it...If presented properly.

Sounds like a new division for the one fly to me. We should have a snoopy rod steely competition/get together.  The pin will also be visiting the lake with me but what if the mouth is closed like last year?

When the fish are "Stageing" I like to play some show tunes, on my I pod; especially "One" from A Chorus Line. And then when they all line up on stage I just cast to the one I like. Soooo easy.

Take the pin you could use the practice casting No better time to learn then in a wide open lake.

10'6 Light action is a good choice. Be careful of some rods that length marked ultralite or noodle. Sometimes they are so whippy that using them to throw spoons and spinners in the lake can be a chore. Perfect example of that is the St. Croix Wild River 10'6 UL.
