RE: Worst day of my life 2009/11/18 12:08:48 (permalink)
I shot one Friday, (9-pt) not the one I wanted revenge on, but the one the showed himself to me.  40 yard shot, quartering away, on the upper edge of my range.  Hit a very similar shot, behind the shoulder and out the throat.  Was hoping to hit a little farther back, maybe behind the ribcage, but it worked out anyway.  Same broadhead as you DB, 2 blade Rage.  I got lucky though, he went about 30 yards, and toppled over the hill.  I saw him spinning, and heard him crash.

DB.....
If you hit him like you said you did, and the blood was a heavy as you claim, I am certain he is dead by now, you just have to find him.  Many times a deer will start heading a direction, and keep on going that way.  Look low on a hill, or in a stream bed.  Thickets, open area, it is all a possibility.  Do you know anyone with a blood hound?  That would be the cat's****so to speak.  I hope you find him, it would be a real shame for him to get away.  I am sure if you have any 'yotes in the area, that they have found him by now, but at least you can get your rack.

Unfortunately, there are many, big yotes in the area. I couldn't get out this morning, but will do so later this week. I'm going to try and search the area where we kicked him up, maybe he ran back?

With the best of luck, perhaps he will survive. Maybe you will get a 2nd chance with the rifle, or maybe even better you will smack him next year and he will have turned into some deformed nontypical monster over 200 inches... Good Luck

DB Its been four days  and  archery is over. So if I was you I would not  leave one stone over looked and recheck what you have already searched and check all that you haven't                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                The Lifter the terrain I hunt is not exactly flat. There there is enough hills to make you suck wind walking up but i doubt there is to much more fifty degrees for the most part. Don't get me wrong its not in the mountains by any means. I hunt 1A  and it has just about every kind of terrain.

You may have to accept the fact that you'll never find him. I know it is little consolation but in nature, nothing goes to waste. Maybe the yotes will eat well and you can shoot one of them and win a coyote hunting contest with it.

Ya know, many years ago I had an old timer tell me what he would do when he hit a deer and lost it's blood trail.

He would mark the last blood spot then start walking circles around that area, going out wider in each pass, but working slowly. He accomplished 2 things by doing that, either finding the deer or finding blood where he didn't realize the deer ran.

Who knows?

Well, just came back in from searching this morning.

Nada. Not a stitch.

I've come to terms with the fact I'm not going to find him. And it's a real shame. I've replayed the shot a 1000 times in my head. What I could have done differently.
It's an empty, disappointing feeling. I've never quite felt it before. But, it is what it is. I've heard Bowhunters love Misery. Guess it's true.

All the landowners have my phone number, if anything comes up. Thanks for the help those of you who tried. I really appreciate it.
