Copper Johns, and they better work. PITA!

Copper Johns work very well at times. I seem to have the best luck with red. And you're right, they are a PITA.

I don't give a crap if anybody listens to me or not.

I tied a few of those Copper Johns up tonight - big-uns with red wire. Those and a few nuke eggs. I might try the nukes with CJ droppers for something totally new. That is if someone would please blow up the precipitation shield that's hovering above Erie.

RE: What are You Tying 2009/12/04 18:57:44 (permalink)
Funny you should ask --

I've been messing around with the Joe Brooks Blonde (bucktail), which is a style of fly rather than a particular pattern and an ancestor of the Lefty's Deceiver, a go-to for salt water anglers here in the NE. The tier can vary material/color/size to get the desired action/effect.

Here's the basic idea -- I use a 4X, heavy hook. The tail (calf tail, craft fur, bucktail, whatever) should be 2X the hook shank length measured from the hook point -- i.e., 1/2" shank = 1" tail. (For craft fur, tho, I go a little longer)

Wrap a mylar body.

Tie in a bucktail wing so that the tip extends to the end of the tail. Tie the wing in at the head, so that it is slightly elevated, to enhance the fly's liveliness in the water. I add a few strips of mylar flash, tie off, and paint on eyes.

The placement of the tail helps keeps it from fouling on the hook bend and acts as a barrier to keep the wing from wrapping around the bend. Tip: to really discourage the tail and wing from fouling the hook bend, try tieing in a half dozen strands of coarse bucktail before tieing in the fly's tail and trim this first layer just beyond the hook bend so that it acts as a stiff shelf that keeps the tail material at or above the level of the hook shank. This little tying trick also works on buggers.

Google Joe Brooks streamers. There are sites with advice on fishing and tying. The appealing thing to me is that they're so customizable, easy to tie and fish seem to like 'em. Also Lefty kinda crowded in there on this style of fly with the Deceiver, and ol' Joe probably deserved more credit fot the style imho.

Bucktails are kind of falling from favor with everyone but fish. Try a couple, you may like 'em.

Some do, some don't. Depends on water clarity, mood of the fish, who knows for sure. Some days a certain fly or color is hot, next day ya can't buy a hit on it or much of anything else. I don't hold myself out to be an expert, quite a few on this board with far for experience and smarts about the subject than me. I'm sure someone will step up and give you a more concise answer than I'm able to offer.

Nice, Steely!

Been tying up eggs and nymphs for myself and some friends.  Also been experimenting with some synthetic materials I have picked up over the past couple of months.  Been tying up some smaller sized steelhead/salmon flies to try to swing up some local trout and smallmouth. Tying up a few big things for pike in the spring.  Also been tying whatever my 8 year old wants to tie up since he is just starting to learn to tie.

Nice ties steely! Giving that liquid lace a workout. I pretty much have all the egg patterns I'm gonna need so I've been tying mostly nymphs. Did well the other day on pt's so I tied some more of those, hare's ears, princes, copper john (red and green), also stone's.

I don't give a crap if anybody listens to me or not.

Been tying streamers from hen pheasants I shot to restock the box. So far they have been working year round for me. Very happy with them.
