What are You Tying

Now that it's almost mid November I've been on a tying binge trying to reload the boxes.   I'm sure most of us have their usual "go to" patterns that always have a place in their box.  I know a few years ago I started fishing streamers in almost any way I could, stripping them, swinging them and dead drifting them, even as a dropper under an egg or nymph.  I pretty much got addicted to watching steelies chase down a streamer and inhale it.  So as the fall was approaching I hit the vise and whipped out as many streamer, bugger, minnow patterns and whatever else I could come up with on a 4X long hook.  Well, you know what, I've caught nearly 90 percent of all my fish this year on nymphs, in any way I can fish em'.  It's not that streamers weren't working this year, I just started picking up fish on nymphs that had been sitting in my boxes for years. I carry a pretty full egg pattern box because, well, steelies still love eggs, but I rarely open it.  In fact I usually end up giving some away on trips up and down the creeks.  It's amazing how a few good days of fishing can dictate what you'll be tying over and over again.

By the way a soft hackled black or olive beadhead sparkle caddis  has been money this year.  Size 14.  In any water.

Im the same way, I kind of get obsessed with fishing certain types of flies and will tie a bunch of them, whether its streamers, nymphs or egg patterns. I would go on streaks where I'd fish nothing but tandems or nothing but streamers. I've landed a good share of my fish this year on nymphs but the last week or so I've been fishing nothing but egg patterns. Going back to the basics, fishing one fly and it being an egg, though tying is a big part of it. I've been tying the most odd color variations of eggs, some with 4 or 5 different colors, flashy eggs, fluffy eggs, tiny 20's for the gin water lately but again in weird colors. If a fish don't take one variation, they usually take the next. So my answer is Egg Patterns. Cool post Loop!

The Lord has blessed us all today... It's just that he has been particularly good to me.

Sweet post bro ......... It started as a bugger kinda beginning and switched to cramming on eggs SS szs 20-14 , glo bugs, estaz and some dropper nymphs...... In years past pink(champagne) was my go to but have had only a few strikes / fish this year! Orange has been the flavour for me so I have about every shade of orange that is in existance with some alterations of each... I've been striving to add a unique feature to most things I tie ...... Just to make sure the fish are seeing something different especially for high traffic areas .....

Lots of sucker spawn in 16 and 18 in various colors but a lot of pink/white or orange/cream.  Also micro stones.  Pretty much the first year in my young flyfishing career to consistently bang fish on nymphs.  Been a tough year as far as conditions but a year that has opened my eyes to diffferent tactics/flies and Ive learned a ton.

Tube flies, been rippin em out.

Really fun, and really cool, and definitely different.

I got about 3 Plano clear boxes full of every egg/nymph pattern known to man, and they have been getting picked at for about 3 years with no dent in the supply.

I've got a box of tubes my buddy ties for me and I rarely use em'.  There's some really nice flies in there along with some Irish shrimp patterns he uses for Atlantics.  Don't know why i don't use them.  I guess I'm waiting till absolutely nothing works or absolutely everything is working.

Before I got into the west coast/ traditional spey theme I am in now. I fished streamers 90% of the time. The only time I would get nymphy was when the water was very low and clear. I had streamers for them conditions as well though. Bottom line is spin up what you enjoy and use them whenever you want. You'll catch fish. Steelhead arent the brightest fish in the world or the pickiest.

My go to flies have been estaz egg patterns in a variety of colors, and combination of 2 different colors. Been having a lot of success with buggers this year too, especially in olive colors in different sizes as well. I also have been trying to present nymphs in low clear conditions which have been working well when nothing else is triggering a strike. Cool to see them break out of their holding pattern to move 2 to 4 feet to come grab it. Many times I yank it out before they get a good hold on it. I get so excited to see em come grab it that I pull the trigger a fraction to early. But thats what keeps me trying in low clear conditions.

    Oh yeah.......  great post !!!

I have caught fish on black estaz, black spawn and crystal.Early morning and higher water...It is'nt the most productive pattern but it has its place in the box.

Last night I tied elk hair caddis, getting ready. I fished tan elk hairs yesterday on Lil mahoning and had some ferocious takes....so tied more for spring.

Right there with ya'.  Fished a local DH and had some small caddis coming off.  Saw a few risers and tied on an 18 dark olive elk hair and wham!  Came home and tied about a dozen.  I'm really itchin' for some serious dry fly fishing in 2010.

    Nice princes there Bings!

Doubletaper turned me on to swinging in low rifles/fast moving water about a week ago on the Nesh. Been tying a lot of streamers and bunny stuff (lol). I spent night and day tying buggers when I started tying about a month ago, so no need to tie any more...today Pumped out a bunch of nymphs (hares ears, pheasant tails, princes, stones) a couple weeks ago. Been doing twists on streamers and cone tipped junk lately.

All that said, the first thing I'll tie on when I hit the Erie creeks again will be an egg or some sort. Probably an orange sucker or glo spawn. Regardless of what the egg does in the first hour, next will followed up by swinging some bunny tails and home-grown crazy stuff for the steel. Getting into that party sounds fun!

    Great post!

orange/white estaz got them in a swap so ive tied a bunch up with a size 10 hares ear as the dropper. but when they nymphs are off either oregon cheese with red blood dots or just plain orange eggs. the Lou minnow hasnt been to hot this year least for me it hasnt.

Still tying the normal stuff for steellies but I did get some new material at a show I was at yesterday. Am anxious to try some of that out. I gotta take some time to clean up my bench though - the lab is just waiting for me to drop something. It's getting to be kind of a mess!
