Heck of a buck 270! Tell him congrats.

Amazing how close his rack this year was compared to that of last year...cool to have the pics to compare. I put them in chronological order to see the progression.

This buck is rumored to be a new state archery record.  Couple green scores put it at 180 inches.

Being harvested not that from from here (25 minutes) and Tom releasing the info last week . it's been the talk of the town and no wonder !!!!

I was told he has some endorsements coming and some other things and is still excited as hell...

The spread is supposed to be a little over 28 inches.. He shot it the 1st day of archery season and has been "after" that buck since last year !!!

    Dedication pays off !!!!

The face on the buck is awesome. Dandy brow tines.

Wide bucks usually don't score well because of the restrictions put on scoring.  What a lot of folks don't realize (probably because it doesn't apply to most bucks) is that the spread can only be counted up to the length of the main beams.   I'm not sure if it's the shorter beam or the longest... I'm thinking the shorter.   So, unless the shorter beam is 28", the entire spread won't go into the score.  Now, that said, I'm not sure if the PGC's scroing parallels that of BC and PY.  It's not eligable for P & Y.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

Why would you say that?? The deer was obviously skinned by someone that knew what they were doing and the antlers were cut off for a mount----again, by someone that knew what they were doing.

Does anyone else think that it looks like that buck was dead for a week, and that it is strange that the body is covered in leaves and his cross-bow?

Don't know what you're trying to get at here.... but it just looks like a good old buck to me. Wide in the eyes & grey in the face....

Might have put the leaves & Xbow there to cover the slit up the belly for the photo??

Looks fresh to me. Notice the folds of skin on the neck when he's holding the head up? Doesn't look like old stiff hide.
    JMHO

    Again, nice buck.

Well, I am just a little skeptical when it comes to the internet. But look at the top picutre, he is not holding the head up. What do you think about that? I am just curious, not trying to start any arguements.

    Don't know man, wasn't there.
I'm usually a skeptic myself, but this one just strikes me as legit.

Again, wasn't there...for all I know the buck died a week earlier with his head propped up against a tree, just so, to make for a good postmortem pic??

Does it matter? He's holding the rack?

The PGC keeps its own record book called the Pennsylvania Big Game Records.  This summer, the PGC changed its policy of placing crossbow kills in the firearms category.  All crossbow kills will now be listed in the archery category.

Pope and Young still does not recognize crossbows as archery equipment so they are excluded from that record book.

not that it really matters when the buck is that big... but if it were me, i'd have a rod taped between the horns so they dont shrink even an eighth of a inch haha

I hope by saying Tom was after this buck since last year did not make some of you think this is not legit...

I meant he saw the buck last rifle season and has been tracking and patterning it ever since..

I'm not going to rain on the guy's parade with the whole story.. but when it gets published it will be a GREAT read...

He found where it was traveling and set up the trail cameras... and was there opening morning and bagged the monster... was NOT hard to find.. and no it was not dead for a week...

I was told he was by himself and wanted photos where the deer fell... and tried to make them as pleasant as possible rather then the incision and blood...

As I said he has been busy writing the story ,endorsements, etc, etc... I heard and saw about it last week....
did not see the trail-cam photos until they appeared here today.. amazing to have all those photos of the deer...

He's the local hero at work.. guys went NUTS when he brought in the rack for them to see....

I'm actually getting my first buck mounted right now...I guess I just assumed that the antlers would stay with the buck until the process is finished.  However, I assume you are correct.

You are also correct that crossbow kills should not count.  Might as well just allow guns during archery season...

    Doc,

I ejoy your posts and check out your webpage sometimes.

I believe that he could have possibly shot that buck opening morning, but he definately did not bag it then. Those photos are at night.

Ben; I was wondering the same thing. As per Doc's statement that it was shot on the opening morning and it was not hard to find; then why are the photo's taken after it was dark?

Ya know guys....I simply posted the pics to give us all something to look at while we're not out hunting/fishing...thought we'd get some 'nice buck' comments, maybe a little discussion on the age of the deer...

Instead it's turned into some kind of a wild goose chase to paint a story about how long it took him to find the deer. I'd assume to put a negative light on Xbow hunting in general. BULLSPIT.

I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to the hunter who tagged this monster. I had no idea by posting your buck up for all to see I'd be opening the door for others to question your hunt..although I should have guessed.

My original post will be edited...if he wants his buck on the innerwebs he can put it up so he at least has the chance to defend himself.

Hope none of you guys ever get a nice buck you'd be proud to show people....then you'll be on trial.

pork, i agree with you almost 100%.. but this kind of buck from this area will definetly draw inquiries, because bucks of this caliber up here are most non existent.. that is why the hoopla over when it was killed and so on, hope he did shoot it up here, and hope he shot it legally, its a discussion board, just remember that there are all kinds out there just to discredit because some are jealous and don't want to believe its for real..I never seen a typical buck that size north of 80 ever..might been killed south of it though and if it was private property, they can grow big, looks like 6-8 year old, and might have been going down hill on rack..i would say its over 250 lbs, judging by size of head..let these guys have their opinion, the shooter will have it on the wall the rest of his life to be proud of..

Agreed. They're entitled to their opinion....I'll just have no part in it myself.

I was gonna guess 6 year old...hard to believe he'd still have a rack that nice at 7-8? It does look just a shade nicer than his headgear from last year. But I've never studied age/rack relation much in older deer...seems very few make it that old, especially not the ones that get their pictures taken.

It's not a ridiculous question to ask (how long it took to find the deer). If you fill out a harvest afidavit for P and Y and it wasnt a "same day recovery" you must provide a detailed explaination on a separate sheet; I am not sure, but I would guess that they review that on a case by case basis. So, I am not the only one who would be skeptical in such a case. I never implied that it was shot out of state or illegaly.
