Yough is now up 15 inches since yesterday. If it is still high come Saturday, fish the river banks!

71,

How does it look??  I just loaded the boat up.  I think I may wait until more towards lunchtime to launch tomorrow.  Maybe fish Jacob's in the AM.  Prolly stay a lot warmer in the AM on a creek anyways.  Start cracking the cold ones in the afternoon and rippin some horses out hopefully.

MO,

Yough went up about 20 inches but has come down about 4 inches at 4:30 PM

Here is a site you can check the river gage at Connellsville...... http://waterdata.usgs.gov/pa/nwis/uv/?site_no=03082500&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060,00010

I am going to run up to Nicklow's tomorrow morning and hopefully be in the river by 11 or noon the latest,
let me know if you headed for Jacob's Creek, I might run up there to meet you.

RE: YOUGH 2007/04/15 12:06:11 (permalink)
Started fishin in the Yough early Saturday morning.  I had three teenagers with me.  The water was too high and fast to chance having these young guys on the big water.  Moved to Virgin Run lake but there was about three thousand too many people for me.  We stayed just long enough to watch a guy try at least 40 times to get his trailer in the water to retrieve his boat.  The kids and I found this funny only because they watch me do the same thing the first time I tried to get my boat several years earlier.  We laughed good and out loud.

Then we tried several spots on Jacobs creek with no success.  It started to rain so we figured the lakes would start to thin out so we headed to Mammoth lake and I’m glad we did.  The kids all had fish on within the first several casts.   We all caught fish (I went home with my limit) and the day was deemed a success with the kids.

With the high water on opening day and snow in the forecast it looks like the fish stocked in the past week will get spread out and fishing for trout should be good in all my favorite sections of the Yough for months to come.

No the state doesnt stock jacobs along the turnpike a club does however stock freeman falls and a few other holes up there late in the season, but not sure who it is. And now jacobs is only recieving 1 inseason stock this year probably due to all the poaching of fish there preseason, last year called and reported a few times of ppl with more fish on the stringer weather the season was in or not i did say something, but the type of unsportsman they were replied with a few explatives and i left while calling the commision with their license plate number. So ha ha.and ppl netting fish while swimming near white bridge. Sad for local angling but no wonder.

RE: YOUGH 2007/04/15 23:37:33 (permalink)
Jacobs Creek was not to be stocked until Fri 13th the day before the opener to prevent all the poaching and illegal fishing that goes on there. I myself have talked to guys(adults) fishing there before the opener in past years only to be told to go F-off and mind my own business. Only one in season stocking and I think that is basicly because of the fewer number of fish being put in. I stopped by there today and talked to several people who they themselves did not catch anything but they talked about two people catching some out of one particular hole above Whites Bridge. Water was high but not very muddy.

Last year when I was crappie fishing in Bridgeport Dam(Jacobs Creek flows into Bridgeport Dam) before the trout were stocked in Jacobs Creek, I caught several fine looking trout that had survived the winter including one lovely 21 inch brown.

Connellsville, Whittset, Smithton, West Newton buttons are all available and all clubs do a great job stocking the Yough w/ big shouldered trout.
Supporting these clubs, by purchasing a membership, insures that big trout can be caught in big water, all along that stretch of the river.
If you joined all the clubs along the river it's probably less than filling your gas tank to travel to fish, for dinks in the mountains.

For All Fishing the Smithton Area,

I am personally putting in the river this weekend 2 $25 trout, they will go between 22 and 24 inches. They will not be tagged, but I would like to hear if anyone catches them here on the board. Not sure yet what they are going to be, but I will let you all know as soon as I know!

Thanks Youghman.  As he said, yes they are in circulation.  Best bet is if you see someone fishing down there, ask.  We still haven't had a chance to put them anywhere.

I think it is too high from my reports.  Put it this way...if I won't put a boat on it there is no way I'm going to wade it.

At 4pm Connellsville was at 7.41--Good wading is 2.3-2.8
Suttersville at 9.49-- good wading 3.25- 4.0

71gto--Greg-- I'll be down this weekend to catch those fish you're stocking and then you can take my picture and I'll let 'em go.

As far as I know we are stocking around 4 or 5.  It looks like it's going to be coming down enough to put them in.

71,

I'm not sure.  Unfortunately I won't be there.  I have a meeting in the afternoon I can't get out of.  Most likely it will be in the 500 range.  As far as I know, none of the lunkers from the last stocking have been caught.  We put in 2 that were in the 9 or 10lb range and several that were a bit smaller than that. Of course the river hasnt been cooperating with it being at near flood stage.

As for the kid's day........

It's set for April 29th.  That's a Sunday.  I will let everyone know about the time when I know.  It promises to be a great day as long as the weather cooperates.

Mossy,

I did get the opportunity to make it to Whittset today and I helped this fine group of young guys stock the Yough.  Alot of quality fish were released...really nice ones. I forgot to take my camera...

I wish more people who are fishing the Yough would purchase a membership to help the clubs out. When I ask someone to become a member and I have to listen to a 1000 excuses and they got expensive equipment and waders, well, I must admit, I say a little prayer!

Guys,
I have been fishing the Yough for several years now, but only in the Confluence area. Now that I live near Connellsville, I was interested in fishing some of the lower areas of the Yough. Are there different memberships for each area(west newton, smithton, whitsett). And also....how do you go about making a donation?.....thanks......................chuck

You going to take Robbie to Whittset next weekend if the river cooperates? If I am free, I am going to be there.
