Nonetheless, I thought this might help to take some pressure off D-Nymph when he is camping out in the Manchester Hole.

I don't believe this is true.

Well, one of my favorite places to fish fast water, around ten AM is *spot burn* right after I hit *spot burn* first thing in the morning. And you would NOT believe how many fish I've found holding in the fast deep water just below *spot burn*.   And guys just walk right past me on their way to fish *spot burn*.  One day #name drop# and I were fishing *spot burn* and three other guys just paused and told us there were no fish there.    # name drop# was hooked up at the time, and fighting a fish.  He was using a * competitors product not sold at Fishusa * with a  *secret* tied just above a #special# while slow bouncing it through the riffle.  Hope this helps.

i didn't know trout liked the fast water when it was muddy , i thought the sandy , silty , dirty debris water irritated their gills , i could be wrong. do u only fish these areas when the water is clear ?

muddy fast water is fishable with a heavy split shot or a carolina rig

single-egg on a hook is all you need.. just plop it in at the top and let it roll through, rinse, repeat

bright-green clear-plastic egg in anise oil.. boom! get the net

Fish do not hold in the fast current itself, but in water that is barely moving right next to or beneath the heavy flow. What I meant when I refered to fast water was riffles and quick runs vs. slow pools. In extremely turbulent water with a heavy silt load, I would expect them to be found on the margins of the flows or in eddies because that will be the only true refuge that you will be able to get a drift through. Anything more than, say, 10 ft. per second is going to be impossible to drift reasonably anyway. The fish may still be there in the current lags, but they won't be slipping out into the current to grab passing food items.

I have invited anyone who wishes to examine my post history to do so. They will find that if I am not arguing against people complaining about spot-burning and information/condition-sharing, I am trying to be helpful. In addition, you will rarely see me posting to request information, and probably never asking about where to fish, what to fish with and where the fish are. I know very little about steelhead fishing the Erie tribs, but I know some more than others. What motivates my argumentativeness is that there are people who know tons more about technique and interpreting conditions as well as spots to fish, yet not only will they not share it (which is their right), but seem to obfuscate, dissemble and interfere when others try to help. I'm not the only one these antics bother, just one of the few that will speak up about it.

Normally your literary skills are impeccable but you do have a typo in the last sentence...

It has been corrected. I shouldn't have presumed you were familiar with the Latin form.

MackJ has been consistent in his posts and I can say we have not always agreed, he has brought a different voice and an alternative to what many of us are saying.  I would say he has been a balance to many arguments.  I appreciate his restrained and positive posts even if I do not completely agree with them.

I have to agree with MackJ's assessment of steelhead holding in faster water. I find them easier to catch!

Spme of my most memorable hooks up have been in the fast water.. The fish just seem to be on the move and sometimes don*t seem to realize they are hook and take off like a bat outta hell. Kind of Similiar to a hooked real fresh fish in the lake that is a acrobat.
How far has anyone else had to chase down A good hooked steelhead or salmon in the streams over the years? I chased one near 1/4-3/8 mile+ as when it realized it was hooked it took off from well below Elk Park lower stretch and I didn*t catch up to it till 125-150 yards above the bend above the high tressel bridge. The fish only went 10lbs but was only 25 1/2 inch long and a fat football in shape...

I kid you not Rap!  We will be fishing at *spot burn* right below the crowd at *major spot burn*.   And I'm asking the board?  If there is a Legion Hole on Elk, why isn't there an Elk Hole on Legion Creek?   And why aren't the Shriners or the Moose mentioned?

My opinion of fast water, fish don't exactly eat whatever your throwing at them, you more or less drift it into their mouths.. with slow water i believe fish eat what your throwing because it's alot harder to drift it into their mouths..

Wow, do you really believe this?  I've had fish move 3 to 15 feet to get
lined.  Guess they were just ready to hang it up? Oh, and the hook usually
ended up in the inside corner of their mouths.  Hard to line a fish there.

The advanage to fishing the runs & riffles are 1. The h2o helps to hide you & your rod from said fish. 2. You dont have to match the hatch so to say....the fish have less time to inspect the bait..you get more of a reflex..they grab it before it's gone. & 3."Fast" h2o is like a race way for fish on the move, they tend to follow the same path, find that current break or seam in the h2o, while the fish are running, you wont have to move all day.(They will come to you!!) The best fish to catch are the ones you don't see..find the fast h2o & pick it apart even if you don't see them.Pockets & seams will hold fish.

No one knows for sure why a fish will attempt to eat anything that passes by them, but the thinking of why fish seem to be more likely to hit a fly when they are in the fast water is that the fly goes by quickly and they do not have a good chance of looking at it, they react and bite it.  In the slower water the fish can examine the fly and have time to either eat it or let it go by.

They don't have hands. We pick things up to see what they are and to inspect them.  Fish grab them in their mouth.

True....  But sometimes they can be pretty closed mouthed...  Guess what I am thinking about is why are they sometimes more curious and want to check out the flies and other times do not seem interested.

Love that stuff. Had a 9 lb hen take me a couple hundred yards down at the tubes on Elk last Nov. Just when i thought I had her i realized I netted the roped one I already had and my rod was down and my tip caught in my net. Almost ended badly for my rod....somehow got her into my net just before that little hook pulled out of her lip. That stuff that keeps me coming back for more....Thanks for sharing!
