Sweet ties man!

Out of curiousity, how much time do you spend on one of those flies?

flyfishermanPA,

Nice ties!  Keep at it, you're on the right track.   They will work well on the east side streams, think fairly small, size 8 or 10. Swing them when water conditions are good, up and green.

i didn't see any big hooks...

didn't look at the thread... but i'm guessing 8/0 is as low as they go
the 14/0 was more of a curiosity thing and for soft hackles
but i tied some speystyle and they look nice

fishusa has the mustads black up turned eye for like $14 per100... or the Daiichi AJ for like $5 per10

flyfishermanPA,

Your flies are OK now.  The more you tie, the better they will look.

Small neat heads are important to the overall appearance of a fly.  8/0 thread will give you a small head.  You can buy finer thread than 8/0, but it's really not necessary for Erie sthd flies. IMO, uni thread is an excellent choice.  This is the thread of choice of most atlantic salmon tiers.

As for hooks, down eye 1x or 2x long, 2x heavy are good. Tiemco 5262 is a good choice for this type of fly.

Up eye, atlantic salmon hooks do make an attractive fly, if you want to tie on them, start out with mustads. There are better quality salmon hooks available, mustads are ok and reasonably priced.

Hook size for erie swinging flies - 6, 8, 10

thread colors - black, white, chartreuse, fire orange.  Most flies call for black heads, many require a red head, I prefer to substitute fire orange for red.  If you are tying a light colored fly, work with white thread and finish the head usually with black or red.

My favorite fly for swinging is a tube/conehead, but for bigger water than what I believe you are fishing.

FishUSA has 8/0 uni thread and Tiemco 5262 hooks.

Plum, thanks for the tips.

In the pics the black thread is 6/0... I have a few of them laying around. I'll look into the 8/0 but I'm starting to trim down the heads quite a bit.

I'm within a few miles of the Schuylkill out east for most of the Summer. And will be out CLOSE to the Susquehanna helping fix my uncles cabin... So, I was thinking of fishing them a lot out there.

A few pics..

I say tie big flies. Give them a reason to chase. But thats just me. Got this droppie the other day. She went around 28". May be the last for me this season. But I'll probably get out a few more times before I cal it.

I was thinking about practicing tying a few of this style...do the swinging tactics and flies work on local stockies with standard equipment? I cant see why not, but if theres a good reason (probably more to do with the smaller water than the fish), I'd like to know before I go too nuts on material.

Swinging tactics do work on stockies.  Big water, buggers and streamers, about a size 10.  Important to swing them deep, within a foot or so of the bottom.

you don't have to swing deep

i had a bang up day on stockies about a month ago only 12in deep at the most
unweighted picked out black angora buggers w a gold rib
that bass from above was from swinging/skating a foam gurggler (dry)

swinging will work in any moving water... the key is current
fish to the dept of the fish

"you don't have to swing deep"  Agreed, often you can have good days on or near the surface.

"fish to the depth of the fish"  Of course this is just my opinion:  Where do fish usually hold?  Near the bottom.  It is usually best to get the fly down to near the level of the fish rather than expect the fish to come up any distance for the fly.

Many factors enter into how I choose to swing a fly - current speed, water color, run depth, water temp, weather conditions, targeted species, fish activity level, fishing pressure, etc. etc.

For most species, including stockie rainbows and browns, I'll take my chances fishing deep. This works for me.

tone isn't expressed through the interwebs

wasn't trying to bust balls

merely expressing that swinging tech isn't strictly for dredging...
rather a way to present a range of flies in a range of depts (dry, soft hackles, streamers)

Didn't think you were, not offended.  Glad you had some success swinging for stockies and bass.

Years ago, used to spend my summers at Prince Edward Island, Canada.  Spent most of my time swinging sand shrimp flies in the tidal rivers for sea run brook trout.  Fished the flies just under or waked on the surface.  These fish averaged about a pound, up to about 4 lbs.  The takes were what made it all so much fun fishing on or near the surface, big boiling agressive strikes.

No doubt, swinging near the surface is more fun than dredging.

i have had unreal resulting skating dries for hungry summer mountain brookies...
explosive takes... 2 and 3 fish fighting for the same fly

also had some salmon explode from the bottom for shallow swings...

i'm a fan of swinging black patterns just under the surface...
fish looking up will see a sillouette, not the details

Where are the fishes eyes located? On top of the head or on the nose? I like to swing high in the column. If I tap bottom in one part of my swing I switch tips or go to a lighter fly. I hate losing flies for one. Another reason is if I wanted to bottom bounce I wouldn't be swinging. I would be bottom bouncing. The only time I go down to the fishes level is in winter when the water temp is below 35. I'll dredge some then. But only then. Just my thoughts. Mind you I am only talking steelhead here. I dont have enough experience swinging for anythig else to comment.

Swinging depth, steelhead

I understand pefectly where a steelheads eyes are and the fact that they tend to look up rather than down for something to take. By swinging deep, I mean the lower half of the water column.  I dont want my fly on the bottom, but within 1 to 2 ft of bottom.

My favorite river to fish often runs a turbid gray/green color. I've had some very good days with only 1 to 1 1/2 ft of visibility.  This is why I prefer fishing deeper than perhaps you do.  The average run on this river is about 4 ft.  I want my fly usually at about 3 ft.  If the fly is fishing shallower than say 2 ft off bottom, it may not even be visible to the fish under a lot of water conditions on this river.

I completely understand where you are coming from. I may have more success swinging high because of the size fly I enjoy swinging. They can see and feel it coming. Swinging is a confidence game, I think that is what appeals most to me. I never catch fish when I lose my confidence.  I have many different colors to choose from I really dont think color matters as much as one may think. If you swing close to a player, it will move for it. Simple as that. IMO swing speed is more important than swing depth. You put enough tip on you can still really fly through a run but still fish near or on the bottom. With a fast swing that player will attack, but the neutral fish may not. With a slow swing that player will for sure take and just may coax that neutral fish into taking as well. But I think I may be getting alittle off track. Whatever depth you swing I think you rock harder than any pinner on the stream! I'm hoping to get out tomorrow morning. I have a 12'6" 6wt MKS Series Meiser coming my way hopefully for next week. I cant wait to cast that.

The Meiser MKS 12'6" 5/6 looks like a real nice rod for big Erie water, bet you'll be happy with it.

Entertaining the idea of getting a Sage Z-AXIS 12'6" for the Catt., not sure about wt, either a 5 or a 6wt. do you have any experience with this rod? If so, what wt would you recomend?
