We were up there today.  The Bowfin were everywhere but weren't interested in anything.  We threw everything we had at them but they could of cared less.  I actually hit a few with the tip of my rod.  Crappies were biting like crazy, and I managed to pull about a 25-30 inch Northern.

I usually go up earlier and use nightcrawlers, catch sunfish, then use the sunfish for cut bait for dusk. However, I'm learning more and more about Rapalas, and I'm really excited to bring my arsenal to the swamp. I'm figuring I might do better, since when they see the yellow truck they won't laugh at worms this time lol

You can't fish real far down from the dam in custards.. it just gets too thick in the woods. There are alot of pike above and below though, i've got quite a few and seen alot caught in there.

I caught one (about 24-25 inches) on Monday right below the ****.  Also caught a few nice crappie there too.  The one in the picture was 12 inches and about a pound and a half.

Nice Pics!  What were they caught on? I'm thinking of heading up under 79 with some minnows and my kayak next weekend!

I caught the Pike on a 4" Storm Wildeye Swim Shad and the crappies on a few different things (jigs, 2" Storm Shad, 3" spinner).

Thanks.  I like that area a lot. Last time I was up there someone put in a kayak below the dam. I fished for a few hours and he never returned so I'm guessing you can make it pretty far.

It can be tough getting through below the dam at times with fallen trees, but its nice. Like a whole different world.

A couple weeks ago we were up to the Marsh and the bowfin were spawning. That's probably why they haven't been hitting much yet this year. When we were up you could see them swimming near the shore and they all had bit spots worn on their noses from rubbing. We hit a few crappie and I got a 21" Northern that was all chewed up.

Due to recent weather it's probably a waste, but my wife and I are about to head up there with an arsenal of spinners, poppers, soft plastic, crawlers and shiners. I'll be sure to let you all know what happens! We're hoping to bring home a few crappie again, but the real goal is bowfin. I'm looking for schools of young ones, and am hoping to bring home one or two to add to the aquarium. Those should go great with my gar!

Don't expect anything to be left in your aquarium with a bowfin in there!!

Well, today wasn't too great. The marsh is actually down from two weeks ago when we were up last, but we didn't do very well. My wife caught a couple crappie when we first got there, and late in the evening I caught two bowfin- a 21" and something a second one a bit smaller. Everything was caught below Custard's Dam on Mercer Pike. They were just starting to hit when I ran out of shiners. That was the only real disappointment for the day- I got 4 bites in 4 casts, and two of those casts landed fish. I was using large shiners (2-4") and was cutting them up pretty good. Seemed like when I started cutting them the fish hit them twice as hard, but it may have just been the time of day, too. I landed those two and missed probably 6 or 8. Two of the misses took the line and took it HARD. I got a couple of them part way in to me and they spat the hooks back out. I've never had this much trouble setting a hook in any other fish, and these guys hit so hard, it's a wonder there's any difficulty at all. I had a great time, though. Even if I wasn't landing them, they were a ton of fun today.

Also, the aquarium has a Florida/spotted gar, a longnose gar, and four bichirs. All are carnivorous ganoid scaled fish- there's a prehistoric theme going on. The bowfin should be just fine with them.

Powerslave, below the dam is only a few feet deep in most places. I'm not sure how deep the channel itself is, but with two feet of line below a bobber I was dragging bottom, or at least weed beds, in a lot of places. We lost several lures and hooks.

Awesome. How do you get to the inlet from the marsh? I've only ever fished French Creek once, and it was when I was probably 8 or 10. I don't have a clue of anywhere to fish there.

We went up to the marsh again on 5/18/09. Didn't get up there til late but man did we have a good time! 2 Northerns- 21" and 25" and 5 bowfin ranging from 15-22". I had two different bites cut my line straight through then had something rip a steel leader right off the line about 6' out from shore. I was reeling in and it just pounded it. I never even had a chance to set the hook, but had a bobber flying straight at my face instead! I don't think I've ever fished a place as much fun as this one. It's truly one of my favorite places to go.

Here are some pics from this year.

- That one was gorgeous! Tons of green & orange on it.
- crappy pic but another really pretty 'fin.

And last but not least- My wife's first "keeper."

We're planning on taking her 13 year old brother up in the next couple weeks, trying to get him hooked on fishing. Hopefully our next pics will have a 13-year-old with some real monsters!

Great Pictures!  Nothing wrong with legally keeping a fish to eat! If it tastes great, put it on a plate! There are PLENTY of them in that swamp and I'm sure you are not depleting the school by keeping one. Thanks for sharing the pictures!

I hear you. I rarely take anything (except catfish- those ALWAYS end up on my plate), but this is the biggest fish my wife has ever caught, and the first fish she's ever caught that was legal to keep (asides from bowfin and sun fish). I normally eat 1 or 2 meals a year that are fish I've caught, but she's anxious to try different things. So it looks like we'll keep one here and there for a while until she's tried what the waters have to offer us. But yeah, in general, I'm a CPR guy- Catch, Photograph, Release. I might keep 1 in 200 fish on my own.

Thanks for the input, guys!
