I have fished there quite a few times. Only caught bowfins and the occassional pike. Sometimes you can get into some catfish and bluegills too. It is so thick with weeds it is tough to fish.

Fishing there in the summer can be alot of fun. I don't think I would keep anything out of there but i'm sure it would all be ok to eat. Pound for pound, bowfins are one of the better fighting fish i've caught. Especially if you get one over 25".

Hey, follow up on this conversation.  How hard is it to get a small boat in there?  Do most of you fish from the shore?  Those Bow Fins sound like a lot of fun to catch.

Oh yea, before I forget how is the fishing this time of year up there?  We tried near Custards **** back in December and got skunked.  Of course, there was only a small area where you could get a line in, but the place looks like a Bass Haven.  I'm really looking forward to getting up there in the next few weeks.

Custards is an easy place to fish and to get to as long as you can find a spot among all the people. I like to put in underneath the I79 bridge and go out through all the channels. I have an 11 foot jon boat I use with a trolling motor. Any time in summer is good but any time other than when the water is warm i've not done any good there and i've fished it quite a bit.

Ummm......it may be that your mentioning that your 11 foot jon is used with a trolling motor, but it's not at Geneva, is it?....No motors whatsoever are allowed, electric or otherwise.

    Or did something change?

They changed the regs.  Electrics are alowed now, unless everyone duck hunting there is breaking the law and the PGC doesn't care.

Unless there's a no motor law that I didn't know about that is what I use until someone tells me otherwise. I wasn't sure about it myself but i've seen others out there with trolling motors in hunting season. Don't see why there would be a problem with that though.

It used to be no motors PERIOD.  If you read the posted regs about using game lands there is one clause that electrics are allowed unless otherwise posted.  It was always posted that there were no electrics allowed, and I noticed the signs were gone about 4-5 years ago.  I never wanted to press my luck, but it seems that now everyone uses electrics there.

There were several places changed to electric a couple of years ago, the upper part of Lake Wilhelm being one of them.  I think that was a good change but I think it's funny how bass boats try to run their trolling motors all day up there.  One guy I know barely made it out on his electric when he didn't watch his battery meter!

I hadn't heard of the swamp being electric but I might have to try that sometime.

I had heard there were a couple of places to put in.  Does anyone know of a map showing the launches?

I don't really know of any maps, but if you go past the custards dam and make a left and go quite a ways you will come to I79. Right underneath the two bridges there's a little launch that you could use to put a small boat, canoe or kayak in. I don't know if i'd try putting a trailered boat in there, but i've never tried it either. I put my jon boat in there and I just haul it in the bed of my truck.

Electric motors make the swamp far easier to navigate. It's been several years since I've been there and that was for duck hunting. Good to see regs have changed and they are now allowed, cool.

Here's a link to the PA Game commision map of State Game Lands 213.  It has the launches listed on it.  You can also download a high resolution pdf.

Viper could find a map of the Dark Side of the moon on the Pennsylvania Fish Commission site if you gave him 10 minutes.

Does anyone know where it actually says that electric motors are legal? I had NO idea you could fish the Wilhelm "sticks" with electric... haven't been there for few years, obviously.

    Thanks!

Does it eventually flow into French Creek?  If so, does anyone know if you can canoe all the way from 79 down (if you portage the dam)?

    Rh C,
Yes it does  and yes you can
Although you may have to portage around downed trees.

That would be a neat float to do but like what coyote said, going around the trees would be tough at times. It would probably be good fishing.
