I have Cabelas noeprene hip boots and I put on liner socks and wool. The boots are also 1 size larger. This is sufficient.

I use a thin thermostat liner sock with a smartwool sock over top and never have problems.

On the bottom:

Boots one size larger than your shoe size (sturdy, thick uppers)
Wool socks (Cabela's wading socks)
Fleece socks on top of the above
Long johns
Fleece wading pants

On the top:

Neck Gator
Wool Hat

I actually never had any luck with the foot warmers.  I was told it was because they need air to work effectively and when you are standing in water...

ORIGINAL: mjdoog0138

A few years ago I was having a terrible time keeping my feet warm. I have 5mm chest waders that I ordered from Cabela's; the ones for the short, round folks . An elderly gentleman told me that the reason my feet get so cold is because my boots are too tight. I have stocking foot waters and I wear a size 12 shoe/boot, so I bought a size 12 wading boot. So a few years ago, I tossed out my old boots and I went really big and bought a size 14 boot from Cabela's with the turf stuff on the bottom. I can move my toes around, no problem.

I am in the snow storm today fishing Elk Creek, and I cannot feel my toes after 30 minutes in the water. I had wool socks on with everything mentioned above. When I got out of the water 6 hours later, and changed my socks, it looked like my feet were ready to bleed they were so red. I don't have any leaks in my waders and everything was dry. I have no problems with any other part of my body getting cold. I never once had gloves on today and my hands were in the water and cold air all day.

How on earth do I keep my feet warm. Any help would really be helpful.

Simple solution, stay out of the water. By this I mean don't stand in the water 100% of the time you're fishing.

Also I've had good luck wearing Under Armour wool socks under polypropolene socks.

Toe warmers, and making sure you move around is all you can do....Bigger boots was great advise also.

My man tippy hires hookers to warm his feet up!!!!

No, I had bad circulation, and I have a pair of duck hunting waders, Hodgemans, I believe.

I move, and wear wool socks.

Also, someone said this a while back, I forget who it is,

but a thermos of coffee or soup does freaking wonders. I carry my chest pack, and a light backpack.

And toe warmers always work, just sometimes they slide and can be uncomfortable.

all good advice.

one thing about the foot warmers, make sure you have a thick pair of wool socks in between them and your skin.
at least in my experience, i put them on a thin cotton layer last year and had to heel walk it back because my toes were on fire.

if you care enough about catching fish u'll deal with it, cold or not.  If your cold you know you need to do somthing different but don't let it ruin a days fishing.  Just look at alpine skiiers toenails after a race and be happy that cold is all you get.

I have been steelheading in rivers for longer than I care to admit. In the winter my latest waders are the custom Simms bootfoot. You pick out which wader you want, then try on their minus 20 Muck boots. Then order them and in about 3 weeks you will have them. The factory melts the boots onto the waders. Only costs another $100.00 for the boots. You will NOT get cold feet. I bought the G 3's. Simms also has an extreme bootfoot for $399.00 and those boots are minus 40. However, last year they all failed. I think they got it right this year. ( 2008 )

GENERALLY, I KEEP WARM BY DRINKING MARTINIS IN FRONT OF THE FIREPLACE ON COLD DAYS WHEN I'M NOT FISHING. IF I'M FISHING, I DON'T WEAR ANY OF THE GOODLOOKING BREATHABLE STYLISH OUTFITS. NEOPHRENE BOOTFOOT  WADERS PLUS WHATEVER YOU WEAR DEERHUNTING WILL KEEP YOU TOASTY

Lots of good answers going on here. My take on it includes keeping your head warm, layer up with good cold weather gear like quality long undies or underarmor, fleece, loose boots,2 pair of merlino wool socks... NEVER COTTON... move around from time to time, don't stand up to your arse in the water, have a warm drink . I almost never wear gloves so I keep a dry towel or rag real handy, and frequently have one hand in my waders to thaw it out (honest Sister Mary Jake, I was warming my hand, don't hit me with the ruler again.) And sometimes when you're winter steelheading you just freeze your dupa off anyway. A couple of quick fish usually makes you forget the cold.

RE: How do you keep warm?? 2008/12/16 20:46:08 (permalink)
I fish all though February. If the streams aren't frozen over, I am in them.  Last year it was 5 degrees, slush and ice everywhere.  I have never been cold with this combination.

I have Cabelas 1000 gram thinsulate\neoprene chest waders, boot fit, 1 size larger than shoe.
Wear 2 pair of wool Wigwam socks.  (I like the idea of the toe warmers in between, may try it just to see)
1 Pair Under Armour (Heavyweight, best stuff around) pants\top as a base layer (Pull over 1st layer of socks)
1 Pair Polar fleece long underwear top\bottom on top. (polar weight) (Pull over second layer of socks)
1 light fleece long sleve top
1 pair of sweats for bottoms
1 medium weight wading jacket

My hands do get cold....but that's because I hate to wear gloves.  I do wear the neoprene gloves which do keep my hands warm for the most part, but I really like the large 10-12 hour hand warmers that Wally world sells and I simply put them in each wading jacket pocket.

The good clothing is expensive, but you do get what you pay for.  I wear this in 40 and below and never get too hot or too cold.

Hope this helps!  Good luck, I think it's going to be a brutal Winter.

Cabela's spring run bootfit neoprene.  My friends and I refer to them as campfire waders because it feels like you have a campfire in your feet.  They are awesome - a little awkward to hike a distance in, but I'll sacrifice in order to stay in the water longer.

Catch fish!  No matter ow cold you get theat will warm you up.

My toes always get cold no matter what I've tried in the deer woods, but when i put my 3mm neoprene bootfoots on they don't get as cold.  my hands never get cold so i don't wear gloves.  i have a pair of fleece wading pants that work great!  toe warmers work good too.  i like the sticky ones to stay in place.

It also helps ( though I don't do it ), to avoid coffee ( or caffinated drinks ), alcohol or tobacco. All these things constrict blood vessels, particularly in the extremities, reducing circulation.

Liner socks that wick away perspiration are the #1 key.....(I like the anti perperspirant idea, gonna try that one)  Your feet sweat more than you would ever realize and these thin liner socks make a world of difference.

The second key I think has been mentioned QUALITY wool socks.  I have gone through literally hundreds of pairs of all brands and found that Hands down Filson makes the warmest best quality warm wool sock on the market.   They are expensive, but the heavy weight ones are unbelievably warm and durable.  They will probably be the last pair of wool socks you will ever buy.

Also try stuffing a handwarmer onto your lower back most of the arteries that run to the legs pass close to the spine in this area and you can make a huge difference by keeping this area warm.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

definitely gonna give the ben **** a try.

Last time at Elk, I fished all day wearing two pairs of wool socks & toe warmers.  I fished 7+ hours without quitting in 28 degree weather.  also wore five layer waders and G3 simms guide boots too.

But there were moments where I felt the cold creeping in and then I had to move around to get the circulation going again.  A little moving around was the ticket.

Dont laugh-- Sprinkle some hot pepper seeds(like you put on pizza) down your bootfoot/stockingfoot waders.
The capsicin in the seeds is what gives the pepper its heat. The hotter the pepper seeds you find, the warmer your feet will be.
Find socks w/ the highest wool content. Try to get as close to 100% wool as you can. Army/Navy stores are a good source. Wear a thin wool liner and a thick ragg-wool over-sock.
I rub my toes w/Vicks, but I imagine Ben-**** would be just as good and the anti-perspirent sounds like it makes sense.
Army/Navy stores carry long under-wear that is a poly-wool blend and the best I have found. If you sweat the poly lets your body breathe and the wool, even if it is wet will keep you warm.
Fleece liner pants, thin henley fleece overshirt and a good wool wind-stopper sweater, Gore-Tex jacket, fleece neck gaiter  and a wool/Gore-Tex hat finish the ensemble and now your ready to stand in freezing water for 6 hrs. in quest of some chrome.

Great ideas guys. I will try out a few for sure. I wear my waders extra large to accomodate up to five layers( i know that sounds crazy),1 layer of old school long johns 2 pair of polar weight long underwear, and two pair of heavy fleece pants. I wear breathable waders. My wading boots are two sizes bigger to accomodate 1 poly sock, 1 mid weight merino, two heavy weight merino and the toe warmers.  I can honestly say, that i can fish all day waist deep, and never move more than a few feet to the left and right. Up top, i wear the old school long john shirt, then a thin polar fleece zip up top, then a polarfleece hoodie, and then my wading jacket.  I is a all a little bulkey, i fish for steel with some real veteran anglers and none of them can outlast me. Oh yeah as far as a hat, polar fleece lined with thinsulate, and for gloves, fleece again. I buy fleece gloves, and cut the tips off of the thumbs, index, and middle fingers. Hope that helps a little.

I wear wig wam sock liners with heavy socks over the top of them. one time when i was in the marines, i was cold in the field, had a tin of tiger balm with me, tiger balm is warm, so i proceeded to rub it all over me, then crawled into my sleeping bag, sweating profusley i got out of the bag and slept on top of it in 25 degree weather, needless to say i almost had to be "treated" for hypothermia. I had 3 minutes to bring my core temp up, before me and another marine had to crawl naked into a sleeping bag to get my temp up. I did a hundred pus-ups, and ran abouty 50 laps around the bivouac site to gte to where i needed to be.

catching fish always warms me up as well, the adrenaline gets the blood flowing

one of the best items I ever bought was a LINED wool sweater.  warm as hell and cuts off the wind completely.  It's $99 and you'll likely have to get it mail order from their store either in Wheeling WV or Hamburg PA.....I can't mention the store here but it trades on the stock market with the symbol:  CAB

Instead of the Ben-**** or Vicks, try shaking some Gold Bond powder in your liner sock. Also, keeps your feet smelling nice for the wife and a little easier on the laundry.
