How do you keep warm??

A few years ago I was having a terrible time keeping my feet warm. I have 5mm chest waders that I ordered from Cabela's; the ones for the short, round folks . An elderly gentleman told me that the reason my feet get so cold is because my boots are too tight. I have stocking foot waters and I wear a size 12 shoe/boot, so I bought a size 12 wading boot. So a few years ago, I tossed out my old boots and I went really big and bought a size 14 boot from Cabela's with the turf stuff on the bottom. I can move my toes around, no problem.

I am in the snow storm today fishing Elk Creek, and I cannot feel my toes after 30 minutes in the water. I had wool socks on with everything mentioned above. When I got out of the water 6 hours later, and changed my socks, it looked like my feet were ready to bleed they were so red. I don't have any leaks in my waders and everything was dry. I have no problems with any other part of my body getting cold. I never once had gloves on today and my hands were in the water and cold air all day.

How on earth do I keep my feet warm. Any help would really be helpful.

the ONLY thing I've found to be 98% fool proof are the boot foot duck hunting waders with heavy Thinsolate boot
(they too have to be over sized to allow room in the boot)

The biggest draw back with them, (besides the bulk)  they only come in rubber lug sole, which means they're as slick as cat sheit the creeks

Three cheers for the toe warmers. I've been using them for several years with good results. I use the type mentioned above rather than the small square ones. These are slightly rounded at one end to fit the contour of your boot and they are adhesive. Put them on the floor with a pair of socks on and step on them. I like to put them between two pairs of socks - one cotton and one wool. Your feet won't be toasty but they'll be able to tolerate the cold much better. The package says good for 6 hours and that will be near the exact limit of there use. Keep extras in your vehicle if need be. Usually sold as (two sets of two to a package) and cost as of last night at Wal*Mart - $1.97 a package. They are also great for any type of hunting also. I will also put one of the larger warmers in my belt at the small of my back and two small handwarmer type in my front pockets. Sure adds comfort to a long day out in the cold especially if your not going to be moving around much. The larger warmers will often last 12 to 15 hours.

Bigger Boots! - Same holds true with dress shoes. If they are too snug you cut down on the circulation and the feet get cold. Tight shoes will also cause damage to some of the nerves in the feet near the toes and make then hurt. Foot specialist told me to get rid of my wing tips and go to a shoe that is extra wide. Did wonders for my overall comfort.

You know, this was the first really cold day I've spent on any stream, and I've gotta say, my extremities did some crazy things.  First my feet were cold, then my hands were cold, then my left (rod holding/casting) hand was fine, but the right one was so cold it ached.  THEN, my right hand was totally fine, warm even, and my left hand was cold, then the feet started aching, then both hands were fine, but both feet were throbbing...

After a while I decided that I'd rather not find out if I was getting frostbite, so I got my fish and headed out...it was weird, though, I wasnt standing in the water...and I've been hunting and camping plenty of times in colder weather, and never had my feet or hands do that kind of thing.

The best thing I ever bought was a fleece neck gaiter, you keep that area warm the rest of your body is good...well except for the feet. Gotta take a walk every now and then...

Poly socks under the wool socks. Don't stand in one spot too long. You have to get the circulation going in your feet.  Today was comfortable compared to some days I've fished. If your feet were cold today, you are in big trouble when it gets cold.

I have the cabela's 5mm bootfoot insulated, and they are the cat's meow.  I only wear sport socks in them, they're awesome for cold weather.  Downside, heavy, a little awkward, I love mine though.  For the rest of your body dress in layers, topped with a wading jacket, again simply awesome for warmth.  lambs wool gloves, are thin and great, but don't get wet.

    Hope this helps ya

    indeed!!!
I buy  knit hats, cut the threads and end up with nice long tube that goes well down the back of my neck and over my head like a baklava

Keep an extra pair of gloves up near your chest.
Just stuff 'em down one of the inner layers of clothing.
Viola! you'll always have a warm pair of gloves!

My man tippy hires hookers to warm his feet up!!!!

No, I had bad circulation, and I have a pair of duck hunting waders, Hodgemans, I believe.

I move, and wear wool socks.

Also, someone said this a while back, I forget who it is,

but a thermos of coffee or soup does freaking wonders. I carry my chest pack, and a light backpack.

And toe warmers always work, just sometimes they slide and can be uncomfortable.

I envy the duuds like you.
I've found ways and layering systems that keep every part of me comfortable EXCEPT my toes

I'm with your on the wool socks too.
For those that don't know, or have missed me mention this before...
not all wool socks are created equal.
Merino wool is best, but not all socks labeled "wool" have much wool in them.
Some "wool" socks are only 20 to 30% wool

read the fabric content on the label when buying wool socks

    Lots of good advice.

This is what I do, and rarely get cold.

    Boots large enough.
Polypropylene sock liners, always, always, always.
    Good quality wool socks.
    ***NEVER COTTON SOCKS***

    quality long underwear/fleece wading pants.
    thin pants, never blue jeans.
fleece upper, either vest of long sleeve layer with collar I can sip over my neck.
    hat, always a hat.
    fingerless wool gloves.

My buddy swears by bootfoot waders w/thinsulate instead of stocking foot waders, wool socks and toe warmers. I just deal with the cold, I can't stand bootfoot waders.

I use a little trick for my fingers when they get really cold.  I warn you now that you are going to look like an idiot, but it works.  First put down your rod.  Then spin your arms one at a time as quickly as you can.  This will force the blood from your arm into your fingertips.

All the above info is great, but I will share a little secret that ive used and it WORKS!!

    Here goes.....

BEN**** sport cream over your feet before you put your socks on. It increases circulation and will keep your lil piggies warm for up to 3 hours!

    BINGO!

although I wear oversized jeans with underarmour tops/bottoms, light fleece pants, jeans, 2 layers of fleece tops up to my nugget, waterproof light jacket, breakable waders, vest, wool hat, fingerless wool/neoprene gloves, 1-2 pairs of merino socks and those heat packs as needed.

Merino wool socks!!!! and oversized boots don't stuff your digits with 2 layers of socks in a boot and lace'em up tight (especially if your booty feet are tight already with the socks). if you can't move your feet/toes your cooling'em already (I leave my boots loose as possible that will stay on and is safe). do toe raises while you cast ;-) serious keep the blood moving instead of standing for 2 hours in the same spot that's the ticket.

remainder as D-nymph said - avoid cotton anything IMO once it's wet it's wet all day.

one suggestion for the feet is to spray them with anti-perspirant.  It sounds kinda crazy but that is what the Air Force arctic survival folks use to teach. If your feet aren't sweating they may stay alittle warmer. I think that you need to stay away from cotton socks also, because the cotton holds moisture.  Man with all the suggestions here we should all be able to keep good and warm.  Now if I could just get up there:(.

Definitly wicking socks, and undergarments. I also have been known to use an around the waist hand warmer pocket with hand warmers in it just like the toe warmers. USE LAYERS.

I like one pair of socks and a pair of seal skinz socks over top.  I found that if I over do it my feet will sweat and freeze right away.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
