    this one is from Sunday.
He's  bigger than he looks in the pic.
    probably 8 pounds

here's one of the better ones from this season
Caught  in late Sept on a size 16 chartreuse caddis
Didn't have a scale, but at time I estimated it at 10-11  pounds.
By the time I BRAGGED to the first person about it, I was sure it gained a pound.
It's up to 14 pounds now

I've been told by some reputable fishermen(?) that it's OK to put your fingers into the gill area of steelhead as long as you don't touch the actual gill plates. I don't seem to be able to do that while picking them up for a photo shoot. Maybe I've just got fat fingers. I guess that goes along with "it does not hurt the fish to drop them or pitch them or kick them across the sand and gravel back into the creek". Some folks just don't get it! For the sake of the fishery please try to take care of the fish at hand before seeking another.

Just my nickles worth! (two cents won't do it any more)

Yeah, I agree with Wally Cat here, exspecially if your releasing the fish, but even if you planning on keeping the fish, there is no need to torturing it by kicking it around,(and this might start another "chumming thread" but)......whats everyones thoughts on if your gonna keep fish, do you keep them clinging to life all day on a stringer or end it quick by snapping there neck or gilling them, I prefer snapping there neck, I hate seeing fish flopping around a parking lot......

May the holes in your net be no larger than the fish in it.

If I was keeping one, it would depend when I was planing to leave the crick
If one was landed early I planed on keeping, but intended to fish for several more hours, I rope it and put in the water to stay alive.
If leaving shortly after landing and keeping a fish, I'd bonk it

guess it wouldn't matter so much if it was winter, them maybe a bonk it quick and throw it on ice (snow) regardless

If the bite is good, I'll release fish all day long. Only at the end of the day if I keep one for the smoker I'll knife it in the brain and put it on ice. Never tried to bleed one out like a walleye, does that improve the meat ? I only keep one or two a year when I go if someone wants one.

Here is my thoughts! Everyone should mind their own business. A guy posts a picture and you guy's have to comment on how they are holding them. I like to poke them in the eye's and then stick my filet knife up their**** They are just a dam fish. I used to trap when I was younger. You walk up to the trap and smack the fox in the head with a club, take him home and skin him out. Who cares? Why don't you guy's go eat some veggies and see if P.e.t.a has any openings.

the ignorant "its just a fish" comments are kind of mindblowing

my question is why would you want a picture of you thumb through the gills and out the mouth?
i think it ruins the picture

Brad, Bill and Nate.  It was first fish for Brad and Nate.  Bill (one of my best friends) has only been fishing for steel for the last 10 years, he has got quite good at it.

The penetration of the thumbs turn me on.

Rich, those are some great pics man!

The guy who has been steelhead fishing for 10 years has just as big as smile as the guys who caught their first!

apparently is one of the easiest ways to hold a fish cause at least half the pictures in this thread have people holding their fish through the gills

i guess its their picture and if thats how they wanna do it, thats how its gonna be!

i particularly like the pics you posted in your My Fall thread where you are pointing the head of the fish at the camera
a unique way to photograph the fish

None of those guys are practicing catch and release so it doesn't really matter.  C&R on the other hang generally means that you have to treat the fish better.  Some of these guys **** near kill the fish with the rough net techniques that they have. They are there to harvest and thats OK with me.  They only do it two or three times a year.  They are some of the best outdoorsmen you can find anywhere.

And your right Deadbolt, Bill feels that same thrill with every fish, every deer, every turkey, every time he harvests meat for his family.  These guys are all from Boyscout Troop 457 from New Stanton.

ya and sorry, i guess fish cooperate all the time and stay still and your fingers dont slip cause they dont have slime on them or anything.

whats with the rod in the mouth and fingers though gills?

As for the rod in his mouth, whats the big deal?  The caption also says "first flyrod steelhead."  I'm thinking possibly he was proud of landing his first steelhead on a flyrod?  That's just a thought,  is that some sort of fisherman sin, to include your rod in a picture?  Also did you consider that it may have been easier to hold the rod in his teeth, rather than throw it or the fish in the rocks while removing his fly, or other hooks that may have already been in the fish.
And fingers through gills, first off its possible to place your fingers through the gill into the mouth without harming the fish,  i also agree with flyfisherman 22, with saying that it is pretty tough to hold onto the fish, and if you feel you need to make a comment of that sort, I agree 100% with a little constructive criticism, but you dont' have to put down other anglers.  Be courteous with your comments!
