12 Months of Steelhead

Has anyone, (trutfully) has caught a steelhead in a PA tributary in every month out of the year?  I could have sworn I have seen this before and just wondered if any brave and crazy fisherman ever completed this.

Never caught one in June, or July ( never tried ), but every other month, yes.

I have caught them from September thru May and have not fished for them in June, July or August,  but I guess I should give it a try...

June and July are the two tough ones.  I came really close to June,I was a few days early.  There have been some caught in July, not by me. I've seen them around then, never attempted to catch them though. The other 10 months are guarantees if you put any time into it.

I bet Tim ( Fshrmn) has!

I think I've seen him say he has.

I've caught them.....1 month, maybe. Because I'm an awful excuse of a fisherman

I've never had any luck in July or August and only 1 ever in very early June. Best bet November.

I've caught them from sept-may probably like most people on here that regularly fish the tribs.

Does it have to all be in the same year to count... now that would be impressive.

I have walked the east side tribs and have seen them still there up in NY but never had my gear with me in the summer months.

Loomis, yes, I actually have caught steelhead in all 12 months of the year in an Erie trib, but not all in the same particular year. As everyone said, September through May are pretty easy. And actually, late August is not that hard if you are persistent. I've went up a few times in late August just to take a day trip and almost every time found at least a few fish somewhere, and managed to catch a few.

June and July have been the toughest for me, as I only have 2 total in June, both skinny dropbacks in the very early part of the month.

And in July, I only have 1 steelhead in my entire life, and it was surprisingly a very nice fish from way up on Elk where a cold little stream was coming in. I know I probably should have let it be, but it was pretty hard to resist a shot at  July steel.

One other interesting thing also about summer at Erie. I have seen/caught some real nice browns much earlier than one would suspect also. I think they come in for a short time on some of the earliest of rains.

I get up to Erie a few times during the summer mainly to sightsee etc., and I have seen some pretty cool things fishwise. My bet is if you were a local, you could probably catch one 12 months a year about every year if you put in some hoofin, LOL.

Pretty much the same for me as everyone above... I've managed fish in tribs every month but July-with Aug and June being few and far between...

If you include the mouths (ie in the lake proper) I could include July too, but again, we're talking about literally 3 fish...

Loomis- is your avatar a picture of April Vokey? Why? Just curious is all...

That is interesting.  You will have to invite her to fish the tribs this fall.

formerguide.  Bring her and yourself to the "One Fly".  We do have a female division, unless she can win the overall and get the antique bamboo.

Never caught them in May, June, or July... By that time of year I'm consentrating on other stuff.  Never bothered to give it a try, although there are SOME around during that time period.

As many others have said, July is the hardest month... But it can be done.

Every month but June. A few years back when that state record brown was caught at the wall at the nut in July there were a few heads around with the browns. We caught a a few that year

yes i have..i did it this past year..sometimes you get strays that never make there way back to the lake and what happens is they sit in the shaded areas for the summer..i caught 2 in july and 3 in june and 6 in august for the summer months and for the rest of the year to many to count..the secret is to go after a good rain because they be spooky and use immatations of aquatic insects such as nymphs and others
