Flies

What is a good assortment of flies for an amateur fly angler in this area to have?

What area might that be and what species are you fishing for?  There is no simple question when it comes to fly fishing thats why we do it.

Well, I mostly fish around Pittsburgh, and I also have a cabin in Du Bois, PA. I'll be fishing for all species of trout and the occasional bass.

Elk hair Caddis- #12-#16 in tan and olive
    Parachute Adams- #14-#18
Light Cahill or Sulphur pattern- #12-#16
    Beetle- #12 or so
    Ant- #14 or smaller
    Inch Worm- #12ish
Bead Head Wooly Bugger (olive/black/brown or some combination of these) -#6-#10
    Bead Head Pheasant Tail- #12-#16
    Bead Head Hare's Ear- #14
    White Zonker- #8 or so

While you could go on with an endless list, and some people will always have their favorites, the above would suit you nicely in most any situation that you could encounter in Western PA without getting too in depth. PM me and I can get you some of the above patterns if you'd like.

That's an excellent suggestion of what to start with. Carry them and as you get comfortable or go after different species, you can expand your selection.

Get yourself some bead head woolly buggers.  Some of my favorites are black and gold bead in size 10 and size 8 hooks and also olive and gold bead in the same sizes.  I far and away catch most of my trout on these two flies, but having some dry flies such as Wolfe's and Adam's are great to have in your bag of tricks to.
