"Eyes" on the fly...anyone ever try it?

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried walley fishing with fly tackle?  I know a depth charge line would probably be in order.  7wt?

I've caught a few unintentional on chartruese/white and all black clousers.  If I was to ever target them, I'd throw a 6.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

    I've tried, and failed.

But I've also caught Walleye in the Yough Dam outflow on Clousers while trout fishing.

6 or 7 wt.  depending on the river, probably a sinking tip line is and mostly bigger clousers is what I'd use.  I've tried French Creek, but only once.

If you're in Ithaca, a friend used to do great on walleyes in the Chemung River just across the NY side of the PA line.   I fished it once with a spin rod, and if I remember right, it's a perfect size for the flyrod.  Not too big, not too deep, fishable "pools" where the eyes can hold.

Caught lots of them on the fly, including half a dozen this year already. The key is not to go deep for them, but rather to target them when you can get them in the shallows.

    That makes total sense.

Are you fishing rivers/streams or lakes/reservoirs?

Lakes mostly- without going into too much detail (feel free to PM me) I get most of them as an accidental catch while targeting other species. Almost always on smallish (2's and 4's) high-tied Clousers in chartreuse over white or olive over white. I've also caught a good number of them in Erie when trying for steelies at the river mouths early and late in the season. Here's one from the other day:

    Nice looking fish.

I've not tried for them in lakes at all, probably because I don't have a boat.  The only real still water I fish are bass ponds, and there the closest fight I can get to a walleye is a snapping turtle.

    Yup, what he said.

Creek mouths and riverbanks that have a shallow area just off deep water are a great place to get them. Anywhere they congregate, they will take a fly. Zonkers, Clouser Deep Minnows, Wooly Buggers and large nymphs will all take Walleyes.

We caught them last yeat off Godfrey in about 25 ft of water using sinking lines and red and white clousers. We were out with the trollers. They were look at us like we were crazy until the seen the fish we caught. Largest was 28". Hope to try again when the lake flatens out

    Gentlemen,
Another good place is the spillways of dams where there is lots of moving water over some deep holes.  Also at power dam outflows.  Sometimes it seems that depth is not so important as coldness of the water.  I have used normal 7-8 wt line (sinking) 6-8 # leader and a 4" steel leader (adds weight and prevents them tooths from cutting line)  and big muddlers, clousers, and buggers.  It can be a blast to actually target them and catch them on a fly.  And a by catch can sometimes be a nice catfish, smallmouth, or bass.
Do you mind if I am envious since I can't do that stuff anymore?

Walleye are the only main freshwater species with the exception of musky that I havn't picked up on a fly rod.  I was thinking I might try it.  I do live in Ithaco so the salmonids are king here.  On cloudy days in the early spring you can even pick up lake trout in the shallows.

D-nymph  I fish every type of water that is available to me.  My accuracy needs to  be a little bit more fine tuned for ice fishing though.

As Indy said, I,ve caught them in N.Y. below a dam using streamers. Mostly in the spring. Alot of bite off by big toothy critters too.

If you're familiar with the Chemung at all, North of Sayer PA in NY, I'd look into it.  It was 10 years ago that I fished it, but it's stuck in my mind as good water.

I think I might give the chemung a whirl early next week I know its kind of late in the spring but spring hasn't really sprung so much here yet.  Pike are still shallow.   I will probably be using a 7 wt with intermediate sinking tip and streamers with a bite tippet for those other toothy critters.
