Stocking tiger trout?

Fished dunbar creek last sunday for about an hour.  Caught a couple of brookies and my first tiger trout (about 9").  Does anyone know If the fish comm. is stocking tigers now or where it could have come from?
been away from the computer for a while- just found the new msg boards-pretty nice

straight from a WCO's mouth to my ear was "the fish commission does not breed tiger trout, they are a genetic anomoly" he went on to say that even though they are an anomoly if they are hatched they will be raised and shipped out to slaughter with the rest of the slimers.

Tiger trout are a hybrid cross of a brook and brown trout.  As far a I know, they do not raise them on a regular basis.  A couple of years ago one of the hatcheries did have some that they were researching/experimenting with.  Quite a few were stocked in the southwest part of the state.  Those are the only that I know of being stocked by the state.  I don't know if they still raise/stock a few or not.  If they do, it is not in any large numbers and they would probably be stocked in a few selected areas. You might try e-mailing the fish commission.  I'm not familiar with Dunbar creek, but perhaps there is a private club in the area that stocks a few.

I regularly fish Jacobs Creek near Mt. Pleasant and last year I caught several tiger trout there all in the 7 - 9 inch catagory. This year I haven't caught any.

there are some creeks here in southwest pa that tigers get stocked on a regular basis.  I heard they are a cross between a brook and a brown.  7-9" would be the smallest I ever saw...they are usually 12" or so and I have seen some 18-25".

Beaver Creek trout club stocks alot of Tigers in Beaver Creek.  Some make their way out and into Meadow Run, then to the Yough.

I've caught them in Dunbar Creek too.

I know that the Fish and Boat Commission stocked them at one point, I saw them listed on a stocking page for Poe Lake in Central Pa while I was out that way and caught a few from Poe.  I agree with the Beaver Creek reference, and know a guy who caught a 25" 5 pound Tiger Trout from the yough...and released it again for someone else to wrestle with.

I think most tigers are stocked by sportsman clubs.  I have caught two.  One in the Allegheny river, and the other in yellow creek shortly after the annual kids day.  I did see a pic afew years ago of a fellow who had caught two on the opening day of trout on Loyalhanna creek.

I helped stock Kooser Run 3/29/07 and there were tigers mixed w/ the brook trout we stocked that day.
I fished it on 4/20 and caught several tigers, one that went 15".
They stocked 4/21 and no tigers were in that load. My buddy and I  fished that day and caught 50+ Brookies & Browns, but not one tiger.

Blackleggs trout nursery was given several hundred from the state to raise this year.  Several other state co-ops were given them as well.  Most of them grew to 9-10 inches.  Thats a bit smaller than our brooks, and a bit bigger than the browns.  Browns do not grow well until it warms up, they always lag behind in size of the bows and brooks in early spring, but by early summer they will all be the same.  Most people will not realize what they caught.

that WCO i talked to must have been mistaken or something because from what im seeing people catch these things regularly. like i said before he told me they are an anomoly and the fish commission doesnt purposely breed them. by anomoly i believe he meant if they happen to occur from breeding they let them grow and stock them.

who knows though from what im seeing. i might write a letter to the fish commission and see exactly what their official response on tiger trout is. i tried searching the website and found nothing about them.

I caught one today i wasnt sure what it was when i first got it out of the water and after looking at it a bit i did realize it was a tiger but not a good specimen of one. the lower half was compltly blank without color and what not so i did not keep it i figured later on if it stays maybe it will get some more color. but i do have to say it was hard at first to tell because it was so colorless . I have caught ones before that were alot nicer this one was about 11-12 inches and lookd to be out of steam ill keepp ya posted on a real good specimen pic if i get one this week while out and about

Last summer me and a friend were fishing at Confluence and he caught and released a tiger trout.  The WCO was in the area and we asked him if they stocked tiger trout and he told us that they did stock tiger trout at Confluence, Yough River.

I E-mailed the PAFBC last year and asked them about the Tiger trout stocking frequency. They said each year they try to raise and stock a few thousand of these fish to be put in specific waters. You figure a few thousand in the mix of a million plus fish is not that much. So they are indeed a trophy(in public water) no matter what the size. I'm still looking for my 1st one and can't wait to get it. Congrats to anybody who has gotten one and the pics on this post were awesome. Except yours Tom !!!!

i got one in loyalhanna last april 2006.  it wasn't too big, maybe in the 12 inch range, but it fought like it was much bigger.  the guys at the smithton club said that they stocked them years ago, but nobody ever caught any.  they said it was probably linked to the fact that tigers have Brookie in them which sends them upstream and into small tribs to avoid the cloudy water.

I don't mean to be bursting your bubble or anything Egg, but that is not a tiger muskie.  I'm not trying to take anything away from the fish, it is an awesome fish, just not a tiger muskie.  That is a barred muskie, without a doubt.  A tiger muskie has definite light striping on the tail, like a pike, and definite stripes and spotted markings around the gil plate and side of the face.  The tiger's bars are also broken up by fine light bars as you can see....below is a perfect example of a true tiger which is a muskie/pike hybrid...I've been chasin' muskies for nearly 20 years and have not yet caught a tiger....I lost one in the mid 40's at Chautauqua lake once though
